California arbovirus (La Crosse) infections. III. Epidemiology of California encephalitis in Minnesota.

Mosquitoes (eggs, larvae, and adults), small woodland animals, and residents of an area where California encephalitis is endemic were studied to elucidate the host-vector cycle of La Crosse virus. Elementary schoolchildren from surrounding communities and gray squirrels from another area were tested to compare the prevelence of serum antibodies to La Crosse virus in areas where the disease is endemic with the prevalence of these antibodies in areas where the disease is not endemic. From 1971 to 1974, eight isolations of La Crosse virus were made. Three of the isolates were from adult mosquitoe

Environmental Persistence and Genotypic and Phenotypic Characterization of Salmonella Minnesota in Poultry Slaughterhouses.

Salmonella Minnesota (SM) is considered an emerging serovar, adapted to the poultry production chain, frequently associated with antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation, and environmental persistence. This study aimed to characterize SM isolates from a poultry slaughterhouse regarding phenotypic and genotypic profiles of antimicrobial resistance, biofilm-forming capacity, thermal tolerance, genotypic virulence profile, and clonal relatedness. Strains obtained from carcasses (n = 26), cecal contents (n = 25), and chiller water (n = 11) from the slaughterhouse were evaluated. A high frequenc

The development and flux of the University of Minnesota Survivorship Program: progress, challenges, and opportunities.

For the past 30 years, the University of Minnesota's Cancer Survivorship Program has been dedicated to providing exceptional care to patients who have lived the cancer experience. Our model is consultative, risk-stratified, and oncologist-led but executed predominately by advanced practice providers. Care is personalized and serves three survivor populations: children, adults, and patients who received BMT with over 500 new patients evaluated annually. As guidelines and survivorship standards have changed, our clinical programs have evolved from a focus on survivorship care plans to supportive

Habitat Suitability Model for the Distribution of Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) in Minnesota.

Ixodes scapularis Say, the black-legged tick, is the primary vector in the eastern United States of several pathogens causing human diseases including Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis. Over the past two decades, I. scapularis-borne diseases have increased in incidence as well as geographic distribution. Lyme disease exists in two major foci in the United States, one encompassing northeastern states and the other in the Upper Midwest. Minnesota represents a state with an appreciable increase in counties reporting I. scapularis-borne illnesses, suggesting geographic expansion of vector

Metronidazole- and carbapenem-resistant bacteroides thetaiotaomicron isolated in Rochester, Minnesota, in 2014.

Emerging antimicrobial resistance in members of the Bacteroides fragilis group is a concern in clinical medicine. Although metronidazole and carbapenem resistance have been reported in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a member of the B. fragilis group, they have not, to the best of our knowledge, been reported together in the same B. thetaiotaomicron isolate. Herein, we report isolation of piperacillin-tazobactam-, metronidazole-, clindamycin-, ertapenem-, and meropenem-resistant B. thetaiotaomicron from a patient with postoperative intra-abdominal abscess and empyema. Parasites and parasite management practices of organic and conventional dairy herds in Minnesota.

The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence and practices used to manage internal helminth parasites and external arthropod parasites on organic and conventional dairy herds in Minnesota. All organic (ORG) dairy herds in Minnesota (n=114) and a convenience sample of conventional herds were invited to participate in the study. Thirty-five ORG herds and 28 conventional herds were visited once in summer and fall of 2012. Conventional dairy herds were split into small conventional (SC,<200 cows) and medium-sized conventional herds (MC, ≥200 cows) so that SC herds were comparable in

A comparison of total mercury and methylmercury export from various Minnesota watersheds.

Methylmercury (MeHg) bioaccumulates in aquatic food webs and can pose health risks to animals at higher trophic levels. Characterization of MeHg production in and export from watersheds can help clarify exposure scenarios for aquatic life downstream. A number of studies have demonstrated that anoxic conditions in the saturated soils of wetlands can promote the production of MeHg, and these wetlands may be major sources of MeHg to connected water bodies. Here, we report in-stream loadings of total mercury (THg) and MeHg for five rivers in Minnesota (USA). The watersheds of these rivers differ w

Assessing the toxicity and teratogenicity of pond water in north-central Minnesota to amphibians.

BACKGROUND: Incidence of amphibian deformities have increased in recent years, especially in the northern region of the United States. While many factors have been proposed as being responsible for generating deformities (e.g., contaminants, ultraviolet radiation [UV], parasites), no single cause has been definitively established. METHODS: To determine whether waterborne chemicals are responsible for amphibian deformities in ponds in north-central Minnesota, we deployed semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) in an impacted and a reference site to accumulate lipophilic contaminants. We then ex

Fetal alcohol syndrome and fetal alcohol effects. The University of Minnesota experience.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) describes a set of physical and neurologic defects that occur in the newborn as a direct result of maternal alcohol consumption. We report on a review of a series of patients seen at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic (UMHC) who were identified as having been exposed to alcohol in the prenatal period. Of 46 patients, 38 were found to have FAS, and seven were found to have a less severe set of abnormalities termed fetal alcohol effects (FAE). This series at UMHC demonstrated many shocking characteristics. The average IQ of the children with FAS was unde
