BACKGROUND: The herpes B virus is a zoonotic agent that is endemic among macaque monkeys only, but can cause fatal encephalomyelitis in humans.
CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old female presented to a U.S. emergency department after being bitten by a wild macaque monkey. The emergency medicine team administered rabies immunoglobulin and rabies vaccine. The team also prescribed acyclovir for prophylactic coverage against herpes B, a deadly zoonotic agent that is endemic among macaque monkeys. A discussion of background, exposure, transmission, symptoms, treatment for herpes B, including latest data av

BACKGROUND: Calreticulin (Crt) is a molecular chaperone in endoplasmic reticulum, assisting a correct folding of glycoproteins. Establishment of its assay method might be advantageous to determine the Crt level in cell or other biosystems.
METHODS: An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) system for the determination of Crt of Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, was developed in this study. Japanese monkey Crt protein expressed in Escherichia coli was used as a standard protein.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The assay was sensitive even to <10 ng/ml of Crt. Since the amino acid sequence of Crt is

Rhesus monkeys ( Macaca mulatta) are valuable experimental animals for studies on neurodegenerative diseases due to their evolutionarily close relationship to humans (Zhang et al., 2014). Rhesus monkeys also display similar hallmarks of aging and neurodegeneration as humans, including formation of senile plaques in the brain (Beckman et al., 2019; Paspalas et al., 2018). However, changes in formaldehyde (FA) levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of rhesus monkeys with aging have not been reported. Additionally, whether changes in CSF FA are correlated with changes in amyloid-β (Aβ) concentra

Our understanding of how aging affects the cellular and molecular components of the vasculature and contributes to cardiovascular diseases is still limited. Here we report a single-cell transcriptomic survey of aortas and coronary arteries in young and old cynomolgus monkeys. Our data define the molecular signatures of specialized arteries and identify eight markers discriminating aortic and coronary vasculatures. Gene network analyses characterize transcriptional landmarks that regulate vascular senility and position FOXO3A, a longevity-associated transcription factor, as a master regulator g

Monkeys are known to be highly susceptible to 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) which produces parkinsonism, as in humans. We have previously reported that only monkeys and humans have multiple isoforms of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the first enzyme for dopamine biosynthesis, with only two TH mRNA isoforms, type 1 and type 2, being present in Macaca fascicularis. In the present study we have measured TH mRNA type 1 and 2 content in the substantia nigra, locus coeruleus, and adrenal gland of normal control monkeys and in MPTP-produced parkinsonian monkeys (Macaca fascicularis)

Twelve squirrel monkeys were inoculated in both eyes with the Rodanus strain of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and were examined for the presence of acute epithelial keratitis. All of the eyes developed dendritic keratitis within 72 hours after inoculation. The twelve monkeys plus two additional similarly infected monkeys were also examined for the presence of clinical recurrences of ocular herpes infections and spontaneous shedding of virus in their tears. Two of the eyes developed stromal disease, and 13 of the monkeys had at least one episode of recurrent clinical epithelial disease. V

The effects of dopamine receptor agonists on urinary bladder function were evaluated in normal and 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-lesioned parkinsonian cynomolgus monkeys to investigate the therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of urinary symptoms in Parkinson's disease. Under ketamine anesthesia, cystometrograms exhibited significant reduction in the volume threshold for the micturition reflex in MPTP-lesioned parkinsonian monkeys when compared with those of normal monkeys. The selective dopamine D2 receptor agonist bromocriptine significantly reduced the bladder volume t

Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder associated with progressive motor and cognitive impairments, and the expansion of a cysteine-adenine-guanine trinucleotide (polyglutamine) repeats in exon one of the human huntingtin gene. The pathology of the disease is characterized by a profound degeneration of striatal GABAergic projection neurons with relative sparing of interneurons accompanied with astrogliosis. Here, we describe the striatal pathology in two genotypically different transgenic HD monkeys that exhibit degrees of disease progression that resembled th

The Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) is a rare and endangered species endemic to China that occupies a particularly important position in the evolutionary history of Rhinopithecus species. Oral health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being in both humans and nonhuman primates. We review the current limited literature on the dental characteristics and dental pathologies related to the golden snub-nosed monkey, based on skeleton data and morphological evidence. The results indicated that this species possesses dental characteristics that are remarkably different from

A disease that is similar to human AIDS may occur in monkeys. Simian AIDS (SAIDS) was experimentally transmitted from 2 rhesus monkeys dying of the disease to 4 cytomegalovirus (CMV) antibody-negative rhesus monkeys. The inocula consisted of the supernatant fluid from 10% homogenates of various tissues with or without buffy-coat cells from blood. Lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, neutropenia, polymyositis, and other signs of the disease appeared in recipients within a few weeks after inoculation. Two animals developed Kaposi-like "patch" and "plaque" skin lesions and one died of sepsis and profou

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is an endemic fungal disease that occurs in Latin America and primarily affects humans. The disease has been rarely documented in non-human primates. This report details a disseminated and fatal case of PCM caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis in a western black-handed tamarin (Saguinus niger) under human care. Histopathological examination revealed extensive pyogranulomatous inflammation in the lungs, spleen, liver, lymph nodes, kidneys, epididymis, right testicle, heart, adrenal gland and intestines, associated with characteristic yeast forms consistent with P

BACKGROUND: Acanthocephalosis is an important cause of death in captive New World primates (NWP). Once established in a colony, it is extremely difficult to treat and control, quickly spreading among NWP with a high mortality rate. This study aimed to characterize the disease associated with infection with acanthocephalans according to its epidemiological, clinical, and anatomopathological aspects in a captive NWP population.
METHODS: From 2010 to 2020, a Brazilian zoo had recurrent deaths of NWP associated to acanthocephalan parasitism. Clinical and pathological profiles of these animals wer

Nonhuman primates were used to develop an animal model that closely mimics human Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Cynomolgus macaques were infected with low doses of virulent M. tuberculosis via bronchoscopic instillation into the lung. All monkeys were successfully infected, based on tuberculin skin test conversion and peripheral immune responses to M. tuberculosis antigens. Progression of infection in the 17 monkeys studied was variable. Active-chronic infection, observed in 50 to 60% of monkeys, was characterized by clear signs of infection or disease on serial thoracic radiographs and

Peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) from Herpesvirus saimiri (HVS) infected owl monkeys lose their ability to respond to PHA during the development of lymphoma. In this study, five HVS-infected owl monkeys were examined for their ability to respond to PHA and to confer this loss of PHA reactivity to normal lymphocytes. Four of the monkeys developed HVS-induced disease and lost their ability to respond to PHA. Although less affected, reduced responses were also found with PWM. The animals which developed disease and suppressed PHA responses were found to be able to confer this loss of PHA reacti

Cutaneous leishmaniasis, a parasitic infection causing ulcerating skin lesions, is an important disease worldwide and urgently requires a vaccine. Animal models that closely mimic human disease are essential for designing preventive vaccines against Leishmania major. We have evaluated both biologic and immunologic parameters of cutaneous L. major infection in nonhuman primates. Naïve rhesus macaques or monkeys previously exposed to L. major were infected with varying doses of L. major metacyclic promastigotes, and lesion size was assessed over a 10-week period. Monkeys previously infected with

BACKGROUND: There are three subspecies of Trypanosoma brucei: T. b. gambiense, T. b. rhodesiense and T. b. brucei. The first two are infectious to humans, whilst T. b. brucei is not. Identifying an animal model of T. b. brucei that mimics human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) would enable researchers to study HAT without subjecting themselves to undue risks such as accidental infection.
OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the sequential clinical, parasitological and haematological changes in vervet monkeys infected with T. b. brucei.
METHODS: Three vervet monkeys were infected with a 104 inoculum
