BACKGROUND: Instability is a major cause of revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Diagnosis often relies on patient complaints and manual laxity tests, which poorly correlate with perceived instability. Since revisions without proper diagnosis yield poor outcomes, an objective, quantitative measure able to capture the patient's experience is essential for improved revision TKA outcomes. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to map subjective and objective measures, and patient and TKA factors described in published research that may help distinguish stable from unstable TKAs.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal simulations based on gait analysis data provide access to parameters such as joint reaction forces, muscle forces, and push-off moments, which cannot directly be measured in clinical practice. Applying these methods may help evaluate weight-bearing patterns and identify mechanical risk factors associated with the development of nonunion. This study aimed to investigate differences in the longitudinal development of forces in the musculoskeletal system between cases with and without union in tibial shaft fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Longitudinal 3D marker-bas

The assessment of shoulder stability is a great challenge in sports medicine. There is a lack of objective tools to assess functional shoulder stability in sports with high demands on the upper limb. This cross-sectional study recruited twenty healthy adults to analyze the use of a force platform in a push-up analysis as a valid tool for estimating glenohumeral stability. For this purpose, the subjects performed one strength task based on a maximum lateral abduction against a dynamometer. They also performed three variations of a push-up task on force plates with movements recorded by a 3D mot

Clinical upper extremity (UE) functional assessments and motion capture measures are limited to a set of postures and/or motions that may provide an incomplete evaluation of UE functionality. Reachable workspace analysis offers a more global assessment of UE function, but is reliant on patient compliance with instructions and may result in underestimates of a patient's true UE function. This study evaluated a clinical tool that incorporates real-time visual feedback with motion capture to provide an innovative means of engaging patients to ensure a 'best effort' quantification of their availab

Accurate assessment of jumping is important for sports performance and rehabilitation. While laboratory-based motion capture is considered gold-standard, markerless motion capture (MMC) systems offer an accessible alternative for field and clinical settings. However, their validity and reliability vary, warranting a comprehensive synthesis of current literature. Six databases (CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science) were searched following PRISMA for studies comparing MMC derived kinematics, kinetics or performance with gold-standard measures during vertical or horizontal

Objective measurement of upper-limb movement quality based on biomechanical data collected in clinical routine has the potential to enable precision neurorehabilitation at scale. However, integrating biomechanical data collection into daily clinical workflows remains challenging. In this exploratory study, we evaluated the usability of two technologies for routine kinematic data collection: an IMU-based version of the instrumented Action Research Arm Test (iARAT-IMU) and a MMC markerless motion capture (MMC) system. First, five physiotherapists independently operated the iARAT-IMU across seven

The purpose was to examine the effects of sex and body size on validity and intersession reliability of lower extremity kinematics from marker-less (ML) and marker-based (MB) during a drop vertical jump (DVJ). Forty participants were grouped by sex (male/female) and body size (high/low-BMI). Participants completed two sessions and lower extremity kinematics were recorded with 3D motion capture. Coefficient of multiple correlation (CMC) evaluated intersession reliability. A 2 (sex) by 2 (body size) by 2 (method) repeated measured ANOVA compared kinematic waveforms via statistical parametric map

This two-case proof-of-concept study evaluated the feasibility and clinical utility of a smartphone-based markerless motion capture system for quantitative gait assessment in pediatric Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Two children with GBS underwent overground gait analysis using a dual-smartphone setup (OpenCap), and three-dimensional hip, knee, and ankle kinematics were computed via OpenSim. Case 1, a boy with treatment-related fluctuation, demonstrated marked abnormalities in swing-phase limb advancement and ankle push-off that improved after six weeks of rehabilitation in parallel with gains

INTRODUCTION: Patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD) lean forward with their trunks when walking, even if they can remain upright during static standing. However, it remains unclear which part of the spinal column is involved in forward trunk tilt and the details of the relationships between sagittal alignment during static standing and changes in dynamic parameters during walking. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the above by analyzing the walking motion of ASD patients using inertial measurement units (IMUs).
METHODS: Preoperative ASD patients were included in this study. Dynamic

Upper-limb paresis is common after stroke. An important tool to assess motor recovery is to use marker-based motion capture systems to measure the kinematic characteristics of patients' movements in ecological scenarios. These systems are, however, very expensive and not readily available for many rehabilitation units. Here, we explored whether the markerless hand motion capabilities of the cost-effective Oculus Quest head-mounted display could be used to provide clinically meaningful measures. A total of 14 stroke patients executed ecologically relevant upper-limb tasks in an immersive virtua

Altered tibiofemoral contact forces represent a risk factor for osteoarthritis onset and progression, making optimization of the knee force distribution a target of treatment strategies. Musculoskeletal model-based simulations are a state-of-the-art method to estimate joint contact forces, but they typically require laboratory-based input and skilled operators. To overcome these limitations, ambulatory methods, relying on inertial measurement units, have been proposed to estimated ground reaction forces and, consequently, knee contact forces out-of-the-lab. This study proposes the use of a ful

Objective This study aimed to use the optical motion-capture method to verify the accuracy of four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT) analysis of knee joint movement. Methods One static CT and three 4D-CT examinations of the knee joint model were obtained. The knee joint model was passively moved in the CT gantry during 4D-CT acquisitions. 4D-CT and static CT examinations were matched to perform 3D-3D registration. An optical-motion capture system recorded the position-posture of the knee joint model simultaneously with the 4D-CT acquisitions. Reference axes (X, Y, and Z directions) were

Existing clinical assessments of Parkinson's disease (PD) primarily focus on stratifying symptom severity or progression rate, which limits their ability to capture changes in functional mobility-an important factor in evaluating rehabilitation outcomes. To address this gap, we developed a novel methodology, the Functional Mobility Assessment for Parkinson's (FMA-P), which integrates motion capture and pressure-sensitive gait analysis to explore key aspects of functional mobility. Study 1. To develop the FMA-P, we conducted a pilot study involving 12 individuals with PD and 12 age-matched heal

BACKGROUND: The incidence of stroke and stroke-related hemiparesis has been steadily increasing and is projected to become a serious social, financial, and physical burden on the aging population. Limited access to outpatient rehabilitation for these stroke survivors further deepens the healthcare issue and estranges the stroke patient demographic in rural areas. However, new advances in motion detection deep learning enable the use of handheld smartphone cameras for body tracking, offering unparalleled levels of accessibility.
METHODS: In this study we want to develop an automated method for

This study combines a corpus approach with motion-capture measurements of Finnish Sign Language signers' dominant wrist movements to study the influence of constructed action on the kinematics of manually produced sign sequences. The participants' hand movements are studied across three points on a continuum from no co-occurring constructed action to prominent concurrent constructed action. The results show that sequences involving more constructed action are gradually paired with a decrease in movement prominence, as cued by peak distance between the hand and the torso, movement complexity, a
