White dot syndromes in the era of multimodal imaging.

White dot syndromes comprise a heterogeneous group of inflammatory chorioretinal disorders historically hampered by overlapping clinical presentations and inconsistent nomenclature. Recent advances in multimodal imaging have fundamentally reshaped our understanding of these entities, enabling precise localization of tissue injury and revealing distinct pathogenic signatures across the disease spectrum. In this review, we discuss the different non-infectious posterior uveitides, formerly called "white dot syndromes", organized according to the primary anatomical locus of inflammatory injury: ph

Diagnostic Role of Multimodal Imaging in Optic Disc Diseases.

The aim of this narrative review was to provide a disease-oriented diagnostic framework for selecting and integrating multimodal imaging techniques according to the suspected optic disc disorder. A non-systematic PubMed search was performed to identify relevant literature on optic disc diseases and related imaging appearances. Searches included a combination of terms related to disease features and imaging modalities. The recent introduction of non-invasive imaging devices, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA), has allowed a remarkable step forward in the knowl

Multimodal Imaging of Papillary Muscle-Origin Left Ventricular Myxoma.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac myxomas most commonly originate in the left atrium, whereas occurrences in the ventricles are rare, accounting for only 3% to 4% of cases. Their pseudoinvasive growth, which can mimic malignancy, poses significant diagnostic challenges. CASE SUMMARY: A 49-year-old asymptomatic man underwent transthoracic echocardiography, revealing a 27.5 × 16.5 mm moderately echogenic mass in the midlateral left ventricle, adjacent to the anterior papillary muscle. Further examination showed the mass with low-density margins merging with the chordae tendineae on computed tomography (54 HU

Multimodal Imaging Directs Decision Making in Intraseptal L-AAOCA.

BACKGROUND: Congenital coronary artery abnormalities represent an uncommon class of congenital heart disease with an associated risk of sudden cardiac death. There is a paucity of data for the evaluation and management of affected patients with an intraseptal course. CASE SUMMARY: A 27-year-old woman was found to have a single coronary trunk arising from the right sinus with a 2.7 cm intraseptal course of the left main coronary artery. She underwent stress cardiac magnetic resonance and catheterization, to assess for inducible ischemia before surgical repair with transconal unroofing. Her rec

Danon Disease Diagnosed by Multimodal Imaging: A Case Report.

Danon disease is an X-chromosome dominant disorder caused by variants in lysosomal-associated membrane protein-2 (LAMP-2). Patients often present with cardiac lesions as their initial symptom, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmia, and heart failure. We found a case of a 13-year-old male patient with multimodal imaging suggestive of left ventricular hypertrophy, decreased left ventricular myocardial perfusion, electrocardiographic abnormalities, and abnormal serologic parameters. Genetic testing revealed a variant located in the LAMP2 gene, leading to the diagnosis of Danon disease

Multimodal imaging in the assessment of quadricuspid aortic valve.

Quadricuspid aortic valve (QAV) is a rare congenital anomaly of the aortic valve, with an incidence of 0.05-0.1%, often associated with aortic regurgitation. The condition typically presents between the ages of 46 and 50, with a slight male predominance. While diagnosis is generally made via transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), this method can occasionally fail to identify QAV, necessitating the use of transoesophageal echocardiography and cardiac computed tomography for more accurate assessment of valve morphology. We present the case of a 57-year-old male who experienced chest pain for thre

Multimodal Imaging of Mediastinal Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma: Two Case Reports.

INTRODUCTION: Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare vascular neoplasm that typically occurs in the bone, soft tissue, liver, and lung but rarely in the mediastinum. Multimodal imaging of EHE is poorly understood, often leading to misdiagnosis as other mediastinal tumors. CASE PRESENTATION: Two female cases with incidental mediastinal masses were retrospectively analysed, focusing on multimodal presentations. For both cases, CT studies showed well-defined, low-density oval masses in the right anterior superior mediastinum with the Superior Vena Cava (SVC) invasion. Intralesional pun

An update of multimodal imaging in white dot syndrome.

The white dot syndromes are a group of phenotypically similar disorders characterized by multiple lesions at the level of the outer retina, retinal pigment epithelium, and choroid. Common white dot syndromes whose imaging modalities have been described in this article are multiple evanescent white dot syndrome, acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy, acute zonal occult outer retinopathy, multifocal choroiditis and panuveitis, punctate inner choroidopathy, serpiginous choroiditis, and birdshot chorioretinopathy. The various imaging modalities help us to better understand the

Multimodal imaging of a case of retinal cavernous hemangioma.

PURPOSE: Herein, we reported a case of retinal cavernous hemangioma (RCH) and its multimodal imaging. CASE PRESENTATION: Many grape-like lesions were incidentally found along the distal portion of the vascular arcade in a 23-year-old man's superonasal quadrant of the retina. The best-corrected visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. The fluorescein angiography showed saccular lesions that slowly filled with hypofluorescence in the early stage and clusters of aneurysms with hyperfluorescence and a special "fluorescein cap" appearance in the late stage. The optical coherence tomography angiograph

Multimodal Imaging of Vitreo-Retinal Lymphoma: A Comprehensive Review.

PURPOSE: Vitreoretinal lymphoma (VRL) is a rare lymphoma affecting the vitreous and the retina. Clinical diagnosis is challenging and often delayed and may lead to aggravated prognosis. This study aims to review multimodal imaging findings in VRL. METHODS: We performed a comprehensive narrative review of the multimodal imaging findings that might be useful in the detection of VRL lesions. RESULTS: The most frequent ocular manifestations of VRL are vitritis, and retinal and sub-retinal Pigmented Epithelium (RPE) infiltrations. Color Fundus Photography (CFP) detects vitreous haze, optic nerve,

Multimodal imaging analysis of autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy: Case series.

RATIONALE: Autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy (ARB) is a subtype of bestrophinopathy caused by biallelic mutations of the BEST1 gene, which affect the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Studying RPE abnormalities through imaging is essential for understanding ARB. This case series involved the use of multimodal imaging techniques, namely autofluorescence (AF) imaging at 488 nm [short-wavelength AF] and 785 nm [near-infrared AF (NIR-AF)] and polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT), to investigate RPE changes in 2 siblings with ARB. PATIENT CONCERNS: Two Japanese siblings

Multimodal Imaging of Optic Nerve Head in Retinitis Pigmentosa.

BACKGROUND: A pallor optic nerve head (ONH) is one of the three features of retinitis pigmentosa (RP). This study aimed to assess the ONH prospectively by color tone, presence of hyper-reflective tissue, blood flow, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, ganglion cell complex (GCC) and investigate the change in these parameters with and without ONH pallor. METHODS: The presence of ONH pallor was assessed by three independent examiners through careful examination using fundus photographs. The presence of a hyper-reflective structure on the ONH was carefully evaluated using a volume scan o
