Plasma metabolic profiling analysis of toxicity induced by brodifacoum using metabonomics coupled with multivariate data analysis.

Brodifacoum is one of the most widely used rodenticides for rodent control and eradication; however, human and animal poisoning due to primary and secondary exposure has been reported since its development. Although numerous studies have described brodifacoum induced toxicity, the precise mechanism still needs to be explored. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) coupled with an ultra performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was applied to characterize the metabolic profile of brodifacoum induced toxicity and discover potential biomarkers in rat plasma. Surgical efficacy and predictors of outcome in varicocelectomy: a meta-analysis of multivariable studies.

BACKGROUND: Varicocele is a common cause of male infertility. Varicocelectomy can effectively improve semen quality, but it does not improve semen quality in all patients. METHODS: Prior to conducting this meta-analysis, we registered the protocol in PROSPERO (CRD42024574608). Our meta-analysis by searching databases such as Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane Library. Only studies utilizing multivariable logistic regression were included. Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated to assess the effect size. RESULTS: The analysis comprised 11 studies with 1,

Factors Associated With In-Hospital Mortality in Mycosis Fungoides Patients: A Multivariable Analysis.

Background Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common form of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL). Although it often has an indolent course, it can progress to more aggressive CTCL forms. There is sparse data in current literature describing specific clinical factors associated with in-hospital mortality in mycosis fungoides patients. An understanding of patients at greatest risk for in-hospital mortality can aid in developing recommendations for prophylaxis and empirical management. Aim We aim to characterize factors associated with in-hospital mortality in MF patients. Materials and methods The

Individual differences in multiple dimensions of aggression: a univariate and multivariate genetic analysis.

Previous behaviour genetic studies of aggression have yielded inconsistent results: reported heritabilities for different types of aggressive behaviour ranging from 0 to 0.98. In the present study, 247 adult twin pairs (183 MZ pairs; 64 same-sex DZ pairs) were administered seven self-report questionnaires which yielded 18 measures of aggression. Univariate genetic analyses showed moderate to high heritabilities for 14 of these 18 measures and for a general aggression factor and three correlated aggression factors extracted from the measures. Multivariate genetic analyses showed sizeable geneti

Outcomes of hospital-based managed care: a multivariate analysis of cost and quality.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects a hospital-based managed care intervention has on the cost and quality of care. METHODS: The intervention consisted of a CareMap and a nurse case manager. The CareMap contained both a critical path and a set of expected patient outcomes. The study population comprised all women who delivered by cesarean during the 18 months of the study and who were cared for in the maternity unit at a tertiary-level university hospital. The effects of the intervention were determined by comparing the after group with the before group in regard to length of stay and costs o

Patient and strain characteristics in relation to the outcome of meningococcal disease: a multivariate analysis.

To investigate the joint association of patient and strain characteristics with the outcome of meningococcal disease (MD), data were collected on 563 consecutive cases of MD reported between 1989 and 1990 in The Netherlands. The meningococcal isolates were characterized with regard to their surface characteristics. Sequelae occurred in 8.5% of the patients, and were only associated with the presence of bacteraemia. The case-fatality rate was 7.7%. Infants aged < or = 5 months and patients in the age-groups of 10-19 years and > or = 50 years had an increased risk for a fatal outcome compared wi

Diabetic neuropathy as a heterogeneous syndrome: multivariate analysis of clinical and neurological findings.

We quantitatively assessed peripheral and autonomic nerve function in diabetic patients and compared them with various parameters of their diabetic status. Motor and sensory nerve conduction velocity (MCV, SCV), vibratory perception threshold (VPT) and the coefficient of variation of the ECG R-R interval (CV R-R) were measured in 85 diabetic patients aged 20-59 years. These values were compared with those of age-matched healthy subjects. Moreover, in 53 patients, MCV, SCV, VPT and CV R-R were investigated by multivariate analysis in relation to clinical parameters. In diabetics, MCV, SCV and C

Prediction of survival in progressive systemic sclerosis by multivariate analysis of clinical features.

The records of 64 patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) were reviewed. More than 100 items from the patient's history, physical examination, and laboratory tests were encoded. A two-tailed Gehan's test was used to evaluate the effect of each variable on patient survival. Variables significant at the 0.05 level were then analyzed simultaneously, using the Cox regression model, in order to determine which clinical features are most predictive of survival in PSS. By Cox regression, the presence of an S3 gallop and advanced age at onset of PSS related negatively to survival. The relat

The potential of multivariate discriminant analysis in the antenatal detection of neural tube defects.

A method is described which improves the ability to distinguish between normal and neural tube-defective fetuses in utero. Early second trimester amniotic fluid is classified by stepwise discriminant analysis based upon biochemical analysis for alpha-fetoprotein and eight other easily assayed variables; classification is more reliable than using alpha-fetoprotein and gestational age alone.
