The Impact of Localized Muscle Fatigue on Multi-Joint Biomechanical Strategies During Stair Ascent.

The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of localized muscle fatigue (LMF) in the hip, knee, and ankle muscle groups on stair ascent biomechanics, with a focus on identifying compensatory mechanisms following fatigue. Twenty-five participants were fatigued using an isokinetic dynamometer to induce unilateral muscle fatigue in the hip extension, knee extension, and ankle plantarflexion muscles through repetitive isokinetic contractions. We collected stair ascent data before fatigue and after three different fatigue protocols, simultaneously collecting kinematic, kinetic, and el

Desmin prevents muscle wasting, exaggerated weakness and fragility, and fatigue in dystrophic mdx mouse.

KEY POINTS: Desmin, similar to dystrophin, is associated with costameric structures bridging sarcomeres to the extracellular matrix. Deletion of the desmin gene in mdx mice [double knockout (DKO) mice] induces marked muscle weakness and fatigue resistance compared to mdx mice. Muscle fragility (higher susceptibility to contraction-induced injury) was also aggravated in DKO mice compared to mdx mice. By contrast to mdx mice, the DKO mice did not undergo muscle hypertrophy. Desmin cDNA transfer with adeno-associated virus in newborn mdx mice reduced muscle weakness. Overall, desmin plays importa

Lessons learned from muscle fatigue: implications for treatment of patients with hyperkalemic periodic paralysis.

Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HyperKPP) is a disease characterized by periods of myotonic discharges and paralytic attacks causing weakness, the latter associated with increases in plasma [K(+)]. The myotonic discharge is due to increased Na(+) influx through defective Na(+) channels that triggers generation of several action potentials. The subsequent increase in extracellular K(+) concentration causes excessive membrane depolarization that inactivates Na(+) channels triggering the paralysis. None of the available treatments is fully effective. This paper reviews the capacity of Na(+) K(+)

Frequency and conduction velocity analysis of the abductor pollicis brevis muscle during early fatigue.

The physiological behavior of the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) muscle during early stage of fatigue is important as a reference for future clinical assessment of a pathologically altered muscle, as e.g. in carpal tunnel syndrome. The purpose of this study was to assess changes of force and surface electromyograms (sEMG) during early stage of fatigue of the APB. Thumb abduction force and sEMG derived from a multi-electrode array were recorded during isometric contraction. Electrode placement over the innervation zone (IZ) and the muscle tendon interface were avoided. The sEMGs of two adjacent

Intraspinal microstimulation preferentially recruits fatigue-resistant muscle fibres and generates gradual force in rat.

Intraspinal microstimulation (ISMS), a novel rehabilitative therapy consisting of stimulation through fine, hair-like microwires targeted at the ventral spinal cord, has been proposed for restoring standing and walking following spinal cord injury. This study compared muscle recruitment characteristics of ISMS with those produced by peripheral nerve cuff stimulation (NCS). Thirty-three minutes of either ISMS or NCS at 1, 20 or 50 s(-1) and 1.2 x threshold (T) amplitude depleted glycogen from muscle fibres of vastus lateralis and rectus femoris. ISMS and NCS were also carried out at 20 s(-1) an

Finishing Barrow Skeletal Muscle Performance and Fatigue Response to Large-Dose Nicotinamide Riboside Supplementation.

Background/Objective: Delaying muscle fatigue could alleviate economic and food security, and welfare concerns associated with transporting market-weight pigs to harvest. Previous research demonstrates barrow nicotinamide riboside (NR) supplementation at varying doses during the last 10 d of finishing shows to be a countermeasure to muscle fatigue by reducing muscle fiber recruitment and increasing mitochondrial DNA expression in a dose-dependent manner. Therefore, this study aims to determine if a greater NR dose further enhances barrow fatigue resistance and characterize muscle mitochondria

Standardized Protocol For Monitoring Muscle Fatigue and Biomechanics In Amateur Cyclists Using Infrared Thermography.

The use of stationary bikes has increased significantly, making physical activity more accessible to the general population. However, the lack of precise, non-invasive monitoring during training sessions can mask muscle imbalances and inefficient biomechanical patterns. These factors, subclinical in their initial stages, can lead to a high incidence of musculoskeletal injuries. Currently, exercise evaluation relies on the subjective perception of effort or conventional performance metrics, creating a critical gap in the early detection of physiological issues before they progress to chronic co

Non-local Muscle Fatigue in Young and Middle-Aged Women following Fast-Paced Walking.

Non-local muscle fatigue (NLMF) has been well-studied in young individuals following acute, higher intensity exercise; however, the effects of age on NLMF are unclear and limited research exist in women. Research examining age-related differences in NLMF following tasks mimicking everyday life such as fast-paced walking is needed. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential differences in NLMF for maximal and rapid force capacity between young and middle-aged women following an acute bout of fast-paced walking. Young (YW; n=16; 21±2 yrs) and post-menopausal, middle-aged (MW; n=14;

Sports bra tightness affects respiratory muscle fatigue, breathing pattern, and perceptual responses during running.

Elite female athletes are vulnerable to respiratory limitations, and sports bra tightness may contribute to this phenomenon. Since the underband is located over the diaphragmatic ribcage, its tightness may affect ribcage mechanics, breathing muscles coordination, and fatigue. Seventeen trained junior female runners (VO2max = 53 ± 4 mL/kg/min) ran on a treadmill at personal race pace until exhaustion (range 15-30 min) in three standardised underband tightnesses. Ventilation (VE) and breathing pattern were recorded via Opto-electronic plethysmography throughout the run. Spirometry, maximum inspi

Licochalcone B alleviates exercise-induced muscle fatigue through its antioxidant activity in experimental mice.

Muscle fatigue is a major constraint on physical performance and is driven by multiple factors such as excessive oxidative stress and ATP depletion. This study investigated the protective effects of licochalcone B (LicoB), a phenolic chalcone compound isolated from Glycyrrhiza glabra Linné, on oxidative stress-induced damage in C2C12 cells. Additionally, its anti-fatigue potential was evaluated in mice subjected to exhaustive swimming. In C2C12 myotubes, LicoB significantly reduced H2O2-induced oxidative damage and preserved myotube integrity by scavenging free radicals. Transcriptomic analysi

Impact of high-intensity interval hyperpnea on aerobic energy release and inspiratory muscle fatigue.

Respiratory muscle endurance training reportedly has beneficial effects on whole-body endurance performance. We produced a novel high-intensity interval (HII) protocol and characterized the associated physiological responses and respiratory muscle fatigue. Peak oxygen uptake of respiratory muscle (V̇O2peakRM) was estimated during the respiratory incremental test. The HII session consisted of five 3-minute hyperpnea periods at 100%V̇O2peakRM interspersed with 2-minute periods at 40%V̇O2peakRM (25 min total). The high-intensity continuous (HIC) session involved a single time-to-end bout of hyper

Sex differences in kinematic adaptations to muscle fatigue induced by repetitive upper limb movements.

BACKGROUND: Muscle fatigue induced by repetitive movements contributes to the development of musculoskeletal disorders. Men and women respond differently to muscle fatigue during isometric single-joint efforts, but sex differences during dynamic multi-joint tasks have not been clearly identified. Moreover, most studies comparing men and women during fatigue development assessed endurance time. However, none evaluated sex differences in kinematic adaptations to fatigue during multi-joint dynamic tasks. The objective of the study was to compare how men and women adapt their upper body kinematics

Fnip1 regulates skeletal muscle fiber type specification, fatigue resistance, and susceptibility to muscular dystrophy.

Mammalian skeletal muscle is broadly characterized by the presence of two distinct categories of muscle fibers called type I "red" slow twitch and type II "white" fast twitch, which display marked differences in contraction strength, metabolic strategies, and susceptibility to fatigue. The relative representation of each fiber type can have major influences on susceptibility to obesity, diabetes, and muscular dystrophies. However, the molecular factors controlling fiber type specification remain incompletely defined. In this study, we describe the control of fiber type specification and suscep

Influence of fatigue, stress, muscle soreness and sleep on perceived exertion during submaximal effort.

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of the Hooper's Index variations (i.e., self-ratings of fatigue, stress, delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), and sleep) on rating of perceived exertion during a 10 min submaximal exercise training session (RPE-10 min) and then check the stability and the internal consistency of RPE-10 min. Seventeen junior soccer players took part in this study. The individual Hooper's indices taken before each training session were correlated with RPE-10 min during a constant intensity and duration effort (10 min) using Pearson product moment correlation. Effects of different respiratory muscle training regimes on fatigue-related variables during volitional hyperpnoea.

We compared the effects of the most commonly used respiratory muscle (RM) training regimes: RM endurance training (RMET; normocapnic hyperpnoea) and inspiratory resistive training (IMT), on RM performance. Twenty-six healthy men were randomized into 3 groups performing 4 weeks of RMET, IMT or sham-training. Lung function, RM strength and endurance were tested before and after training. RM fatigue during intermittent hyperpnoea was assessed by twitch oesophageal (P(oes,tw)) and gastric pressures with cervical and thoracic magnetic stimulation.
