[Psychotherapy and music-induced altered state of consciousness].

The author has a concept of illness which perceives it mainly as a loss of self-confidence, of acceptance and of being integrated as a part of a greater entirety. Therefore therapy has to offer support in order to allow the awareness of these values to grow. The main means to do this is the accompaniment of the patient into an altered state of consciousness. The author describes the use of musical trance as an induction to an altered state of consciousness, the place this method occupies within the field of music therapy, the main pillars of musical trance and their history, the scientific con

Improved procedure of colonoscopy under accompanying music therapy.

BACKGROUND: Administration of sedatives and analgetics during colonoscopy includes the risk for arterial hypotension and respiratory depression. The aim of this study was to assess whether music therapy increases patients tolerance and reduces the need of analgo-sedative premedication. METHODS: 146 consecutive patients were examined in a randomized, prospective study. Colonoscopy was performed under intravenous administration with titrated dosages of midazolam and pethidin. Oxygen was given in cases of blood desaturation below values of 90%. Patients younger than 18 and older than 80 years, p

Music Preferences, Friendship, and Externalizing Behavior in Early Adolescence: A SIENA Examination of the Music Marker Theory Using the SNARE Study.

Music Marker Theory posits that music is relevant for the structuring of peer groups and that rock, urban, or dance music preferences relate to externalizing behavior. The present study tested these hypotheses, by investigating the role of music preference similarity in friendship selection and the development of externalizing behavior, while taking the effects of friends' externalizing behavior into account. Data were used from the first three waves of the SNARE (Social Network Analysis of Risk behavior in Early adolescence) study (N = 1144; 50% boys; M age = 12.7; SD = 0.47), including stude

Music and mild cognitive impairment: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) detrimentally impacts the lives of affected individuals, typically older adults. With the proportion of older adults exponentially increasing, the number of individuals with MCI is on the rise. Music-based interventions, in particular, have demonstrated benefit as a nonpharmacological treatment for individuals with MCI. The purpose of this study was to summarize and describe the extant literature about music engagement and individuals with MCI. To this end, the researchers utilized a scoping review due to its flexible nature when revie

Auditory scene analysis in music: A synthetic review.

Music is the synthesis of a multitude of components: the combination of spectrotemporal structures emerging from different acoustic or electronic instruments, carefully orchestrated to form a connected whole. From these complex textures, our auditory system groups components through a process called musical scene analysis (MSA). In this review, we aim to address several questions about MSA. What are the perceptual principles underpinning musical scene perception? How are these principles being probed with different experimental paradigms? What stimulus and listener factors shape MSA? And what

Music Enjoyment in Hearing Loss: Beyond Auditory Perception.

Background/Objectives: Music is an important component of quality of life and is increasingly recognized as a meaningful patient-centered outcome in hearing healthcare. Although individuals with hearing loss frequently report reduced enjoyment of music, research in this area has focused on auditory perception, including pitch, timbre, melody, and sound quality. Consequently, music enjoyment is often conceptualized and measured primarily through perceptual performance, despite growing evidence that enjoyment represents a broader subjective experience. Methods: This narrative review examines the

Understanding individual differences to specific rewards through music.

Understanding reward processing is essential for comprehending human behavior, from motivation and learning to affective disorders and addiction. Most research assumes a global sensitivity to reward, overlooking specific sensitivities to different stimuli. However, recent studies have revealed variability in music reward sensitivity, including healthy individuals with specific musical anhedonia - an impaired ability to derive pleasure from music despite intact responses to other rewards. This review explores individual differences in music reward and potential causes of musical anhedonia. We p

Expertise-Dependent Brain Network Organization During Music Perception.

Listening to music is a ubiquitous human activity, but little is known about its functional cerebral correlates. We investigated the dynamics of fMRI-based brain activation patterns associated with two musical compositions and examined whether these patterns are modulated by the degree of musical expertise. Specifically, 24 aspiring professionals and 17 amateur musicians listened to a baroque composition by J. S. Bach and an early modern piece by A. Webern. Using measures of dynamic and static functional connectivity and graph theory, we identified two distinct brain states: one characterized

Music-based therapeutic interventions for people with dementia.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a clinical syndrome with a number of different causes. It is characterised by deterioration in cognitive, behavioural, social and emotional functioning. Pharmacological interventions are available but have limited effect on many of the syndrome's features. However, receptivity to music may remain until the late phases of dementia, and music-based therapeutic interventions (which include, but are not limited to, music therapy) are suitable for people with advanced dementia. As there is uncertainty about the effectiveness of music-based therapeutic interventions, trials a

Understanding Music Participation for Adults With Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Adults with Down syndrome are living longer and have high risk of experiencing Alzheimer's disease as they age. With few services available, music is a promising modality that has been shown to support cognitive functioning. This study reported on the frequency of music participation for adults with Down syndrome and explored associations of age, race and level of intellectual disability with music participation. METHODS: The research team administered a survey to care partners of adults with Down syndrome (n = 27) that measured music participation in terms of 'listening' and 'pla

Individuals with congenital amusia remember music they like.

Music is better recognized when it is liked. Does this association remain evident when music perception and memory are severely impaired, as in congenital amusia? We tested 11 amusic and 11 matched control participants, asking whether liking of a musical excerpt influences subsequent recognition. In an initial exposure phase, participants-unaware that their recognition would be tested subsequently-listened to 24 musical excerpts and judged how much they liked each excerpt. In the test phase that followed, participants rated whether they recognized the previously heard excerpts, which were inte

Potential Benefits of Music Therapy on Stroke Rehabilitation.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Stroke is associated with a high rate of disability and mortality, and survivors are usually accompanied with dysphagia, aphasia, motor dysfunction, cognitive impairment, depression, and other complications. In the past decades, many studies have been conducted to reveal the pathogenesis and pathological mechanisms of stroke. Furthermore, treatment methods have been developed that contribute to the elevated survival rate of stroke patients. Early rehabilitation poststroke is starting to be recognized as important and has been receiving increasing attention in order to further improve the quali

Temporal coding and music perception in bimodal listeners.

OBJECTIVE: Limited low frequency (LF) pitch and temporal fine structure (TFS) sensitivity have been thought to contribute significantly to poor music perception in cochlear implant (CI) listeners. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate music perception in relation to LF pitch perception and temporal coding, specifically in people with bimodal stimulation as a promising approach to improve spectro-temporal sensitivity in CI listeners. METHODS: Eleven postlingually deafened bimodal listeners participated in the study (mean age=55.5 years, range 36-75 years, SD=11.7). LF pitch/TFS sensitivity was ev

The hearing health of live-music sound engineers.

Most studies of hearing loss prevention in the music industry focus on the risk of hearing injury to musicians. However, live-music sound engineers (LMSE) may also be at risk of hearing injury due to their work-related sound exposure. We studied 27 LMSE, all of whom underwent otologic examination, including audiometry, distortion product otoacoustic emissions, speech discrimination and uncomfortable loudness levels, and completed a questionnaire investigating their history of sound exposure and use of hearing protectors. Hearing thresholds were significantly poorer than normative data across s

Experimental muscle pain and music, do they interact?

BACKGROUND: Music is used to evoke audio analgesia during dental procedures, but it is unknown if experimental pain and music interact. This study aimed to explore the multisensory interaction between contrasting types of music and experimentally induced muscle pain. METHODS: In 20 healthy women, 0.3 mL sterile hypertonic saline (5.8%) was injected into the masseter muscle during three sessions while contrasting music (classical and black metal) or no music was played in the background. Pain intensity was assessed every 15 seconds with a 0-100 mm visual analogue scale (VAS) until pain subside

Functional connectivity of music-induced analgesia in fibromyalgia.

Listening to self-chosen, pleasant and relaxing music reduces pain in fibromyalgia (FM), a chronic centralized pain condition. However, the neural correlates of this effect are fairly unknown. In our study, we wished to investigate the neural correlates of music-induced analgesia (MIA) in FM patients. To do this, we studied 20 FM patients and 20 matched healthy controls (HC) acquiring rs-fMRI with a 3T MRI scanner, and pain data before and after two 5-min auditory conditions: music and noise. We performed resting state functional connectivity (rs-FC) seed-based correlation analyses (SCA) using
