BACKGROUND: We perform partial sphincterectomy during cataract surgery in cases with very small pupil (< 3 mm). We assume that the small pupil is mainly due to a fibrosis ring of the sphincter muscle.
PATIENTS: In 35 patients we performed the complete ophthalmological routine checkup. The pupil diameter was analysed by perimeter: a base value, with light, and in pharmaceutical mydriasis. Moreover 15 preparations were analysed histologically.

Botulinum toxin (BoTx) has been clinically used in the treatment of localized dystonic states such as blepharospasm, as well as in strabismus. Reported side effects have included primary excessive weakness of neighboring extraocular muscles. Thirty-eight patients who ingested ethchlorvynol were seen at our institution over an 8.7 year period. Eleven involved ethchlorvynol alone ("pure") while the remainder included at least one other drug ("mixed"). Twenty-three of the patients were women. Six patients required hospitalization. PURPOSE: To assess the risk factors for intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation during the early period post cataract surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
METHODS: This study involved 1587 eyes that underwent cataract surgery at the Baptist Eye Institute, Kyoto, Japan between April 2020 and May 2021. In all subjects, risk factors for early postoperative IOP elevation (i.e., an increase of IOP of 10 mmHg or more at 1-day postoperative compared with that at baseline, or a postoperative IOP of 28 mmHg or more) were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression analysis.

We reviewed the evidence on features of central nervous system (CNS) involvement in trichinellosis, systematically searching five databases (to January 2021).
