Evaluation of Oral Health Status and Treatment Needs of Children with Congenital and Acquired Heart Disease.

Objective: To evaluate the oral health status and treatment needs of children with congenital and acquired heart disease. Methods: This descriptive study included 301 children aged 5-14 from June 2022 to June 2023. Heart conditions were classified by congenital/acquired status and severity. The children's sociodemographic characteristics, medical and dental history, tooth brushing habits, and non-nutritional habits (bruxism, nail-biting, thumb-sucking, etc.) were evaluated. Oral health assessments including caries, oral hygiene, enamel defects, and dental treatment needs-related indices were r

A prospective clinical cohort-based study of the prevalence of OCD, obsessive compulsive and related disorders, and tics in families of patients with OCD.

BACKGROUND: The lifetime prevalence of obsessive - compulsive disorder (OCD) is currently estimated at 2 - 3% and the prevalence in first-degree family members is estimated to range between 10 and 11%. Separating OCD from other anxiety disorders and including it into the new "obsessive - compulsive and related disorders" (OCRDs) category has had a dramatic impact on the diagnosis, while also contributing to the better understanding of the genetics of these disorders. Indeed, grouping OCD with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and body-focused repetitive behaviors such as trichotillomania (hair p

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Pinworm Infection.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic infection with pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis), a human pathogen, is clinically relevant in Germany, with an estimated prevalence in childhood of 2-20%. Enterobiasis can cause major mental distress. There is little systematically verified knowledge on the treatment of this condition, and there is no corresponding German guideline. This review is, therefore, intended as a summary of the current state of knowledge. METHODS: This review is based on pertinent publications retrieved by a selective search in PubMed for literature appearing from 1 January 1990 to 5 February

TMD Patients With High Pain-Related Disability Have Higher Oral Behaviour Scores Than Individuals Without Pain and TMD Patients With Low Pain-Related Disability.

BACKGROUND: Some studies suggest that oral behaviours, such as clenching, grinding and nail biting, are common in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). However, the relationship between oral behaviours and key aspects of TMDs, such as pain-related disability, remains unexplored. STUDY OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to assess the relationship between oral behaviours and pain in TMD patients with low or high pain-related disability, compared to pain-free individuals without TMD (non-TMD). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, adult participants who attended the dental unit at the Uni

Sources and seroprevalence of toxocariasis in Turkey.

Toxocariasis in humans is considered a rare disease in Turkey, and the absence of specific symptoms of this disease is probably the main reason for clinicians to underestimate and underdiagnose the disease. Although there are several seroepidemiological studies on visceral larva migrans in the country, a comparison between them is difficult as the serological tests are not standardised. After the introduction of the easily accessible ELISA kit in the market, the number of seroepidemiological studies has increased in which the reported rates ranged between 1% and 56%. Similar to other countries

Habits affecting dental and maxillofacial growth and development.

In concluding this discussion, it is apparent that altered oral function or rest position may have a significant influence on the developing orofacial region. In the case of non-nutritive sucking habits, the child's commitment and desire to stop the habit is important to the successful elimination of the habit. At times, a hands-off approach is our best approach. Other habits are managed by addressing their cause. We, as dentists, have the ability to influence this process through the proper identification and management of these problems.

Infections of the hand.

The unique anatomic arrangements in the hand make possible rapid extension of infections through synovial-lined spaces if abscesses are not drained and pressure is allowed to build up. Adequate knowledge of these anatomic features and of routes for surgical drainage is mandatory if one is to give adequate management of hand infections. Localized processes, such as paronychia, felon, and human bite infections also require special insight for adequate treatment.

Dermatologic features of Smith-Magenis syndrome.

Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) is characterized by distinctive facial and skeletal features, developmental delay, cognitive impairment, and behavioral abnormalities, including self-injurious behaviors. We aimed to investigate whether cutaneous features are common in SMS. We performed a complete skin examination in 20 young SMS patients. Skin features secondary to self-injurious behavior, such as bites, abrasions, dystrophic scars, limited spots of hyperkeratosis, anomalies of the nails, and whitlows, were found in the majority of patients. Acral pachydermia and fissured plantar keratoderma were

Comparative Assessment of Orofacial Myofunction, Strength, and Quality of Life in Children With and Without Anterior Open Bite: The OMBIT Study.

PURPOSE: Anterior open bite (AOB) is a multifactorial malocclusion frequently associated with nonnutritive sucking habits (NNSHs) and orofacial dysfunctions. However, little is known about the specific orofacial strength and endurance profile in affected children. This study evaluated myofunctional history, orofacial myofunctional status, orofacial strength, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in children in the mixed dentition stage with AOB, compared to controls without AOB. METHOD: Sixteen children with AOB in the mixed dentition stage (Mage = 8.2 years) and 16 age- and gender

Onychophagia in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Prevalence and Clinical Characterisation.

Introduction: Onychophagia, commonly known as nail-biting, is a chronic and repetitive behaviour disorder characterised by a compulsive/habitual nature. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and onychophagia present a noteworthy intersection in clinical psychiatry. With a paucity of clinical investigations on this topic, we decided to perform a study on onychophagia in OCD. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional investigation, the sample comprised patients (aged 18 years and older) having a primary diagnosis of OCD (DSM-5) and a score on the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale of at le

Prevalence of Temporomandibular Disorders Based on a Shortened Symptom Questionnaire of the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders and Its Screening Reliability for Children and Adolescents Aged 7-14 Years.

The prevalence and adequacy of diagnostic approaches for temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in children and adolescents are still matters of debate. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of TMD and oral habits in children and adolescents aged 7-14 years and evaluate the consistency between self-reported TMD symptoms and clinical findings using a shortened Axis I of Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD). Children (aged 7-10) and adolescents (aged 11-14) of both sexes were invited to participate in this study (n = 1468). Descriptive statistics for all observed variables and Mann-Whitney U-T

An Unusual Pediatric Manifestation of the Herpes Simplex Virus.

Herpetic whitlow is a viral infection of the fingers or toes caused by the herpes simplex virus. Herpes simplex virus is a common pathogen that causes infections in any cutaneous or mucocutaneous surface, most commonly gingivostomatitis or genital herpes. However, infection of the digits is also infrequently reported. Herpetic whitlow occurs when the virus infects the distal phalanx of the fingers or toes by means of direct inoculation, causing pain, swelling, erythema, and vesicle formation. The proper diagnosis is important because the condition can mimic various other podiatric abnormalitie
