CONTEXT: Narrative interventions have been shown to be appropriate and feasible in palliative care for patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals alike. However, such interventions lack customizability, are resource and time intensive, and are often facilitated by clinical staff who have minimal training in story development.
OBJECTIVES: Evaluate a single, brief, artist-facilitated storytelling session on a palliative care unit and analyze stories with the five elements of close reading in narrative medicine.
METHODS: A professional storyteller facilitated sessions with patients, car

Through literature review and analysis of clinical practice cases, this paper proposes that narrative dialogue refers to the conscious expression and communication between physicians and patients, with a clear narrative orientation within specific clinical contexts. Its core lies in externalizing patients' implicit, unspoken suffering and establishing empathic connections.Narrative dialogue comprises four constituent elements-context,subject,orientation,and connection-and manifests distinct objectives and characteristics at three levels:value, narrative essence, and practice. This article synthesizes

BACKGROUND: The nursing ability for medical narrative is essential for patient-focused practice within the bio-psycho-social model of medicine. This study sought to identify influential factors affecting nursing competence in medical narrative skills among practicing nurses in healthcare settings to determine the personal, environmental, relational, and organizational elements that impact this essential competency using grounded theory and constructivist theoretical frameworks.
METHODS: A qualitative study design was employed with semi-structured interviews distributed to nurses with expertis

Ethical dilemmas in real-world medical settings expose the limitations of bioethics, represented by the "four-principle framework," in dynamic and personalized clinical decision-making.The development of narrative medicine provides more space for showcasing the unique context of life, alleviating the predicament of normative ethics. However, current ethical practices in narrative medicine have not responded to the theoretical problem of the lack of ontology, moral subject, and reflective process in principlism, calling for the further exploration of the moral issues inherent in the narrative process

Narrative medicine is defined as medicine practiced with the competence to absorb, interpret, and respond to narratives. We hereby present a resource compiling narrative medicine texts, aiming to make narratives created by patients and/or their families fully accessible to citizens, by developing a documentary database and describing its characteristics. Active bibliographic search, March-June 2022 for narratives in Spanish and/or Catalan written after the year 2000 by patients and/or their companions. Subsequently, narratives up to June 2024 were included. The compilation is available in a se

BACKGROUND: Current opioid overdose mortality surveillance methods do not capture the complexity of the overdose epidemic. Most rely on death certificates, which may underestimate both opioid analgesic and heroin deaths. Categorizing deaths using other characteristics from the death record including route of drug administration may provide useful information to design and evaluate overdose prevention interventions.
METHODS: We reviewed California Electronic Death Reporting System records and San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) toxicology reports and investigative case na

PROBLEM: People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face complex biopsychosocial challenges and are medically underserved. This is in part due to insufficient resources and supports but can also be attributed to a lack of adequate physician training in addressing the unique needs of this population.
INTERVENTION: This study aimed to introduce 1st-year medical students to the IDD population using a blended educational experience that included video narratives of and direct interactions with people affected by IDD. The goal of this intervention was to promote person-centered

Narrative medicine has emerged as an influential framework in contemporary healthcare, arguing that attending to patients' stories improves the quality of clinical practice and ethical reasoning. Yet the conversation surrounding narrative practice has developed largely within medicine, leaving nursing positioned as a secondary site of application rather than a primary source. This paper challenges that positioning. The paper argues that narrative nursing is not an extension of narrative medicine but a primary ethical practice in its own right, grounded in nursing's unique structural capacity f

The first decisive steps of medicine towards becoming a science in its present shape happen to coincide with "the rise of the novel" in the eighteenth century. Before this well known and in our days still growing scientific specialization of medicine, the connections between literature and medicine were both many and close. By reading and analyzing a contemporary novel, The Death of a Beekeeper by the Swedish author Lars Gustafsson (1978), this article is an attempt to explore to which extent a fictional narrative about a unique case of cancer may illuminate challenges associated with the expe

BACKGROUND: Patient narratives are foundational to diagnosis, yet clinicians frequently and unintentionally distort, minimize, or reinterpret these narratives during clinical encounters. These distortions - termed patient narrative distortion - are unmeasured contributors to diagnostic error [G.D. Schiff, O. Hasan, S. Kim, R. Abrams, K. Cosby, B.L. OBJECTIVES: There is a paucity of illness accounts of men with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS), despite a significant level of prevalence and burden of disease. This qualitative study thus elicited twelve accounts from men suffering with CP/CPPS.
METHODS: Narrative analysis was employed, focusing primarily on narrative content.
RESULTS: Three major narrative themes were identified: (1) Medical stories: Blame and shame; (2) The Erratic nature of CP/CPPS; and (3) Ongoing struggles for coping and cures and the Search for meaning.
CONCLUSIONS: Recommendations were mad

BACKGROUND: Orthobiologics have shown promise in repair, restoration and regeneration of damaged and degenerated spine, joint and musculoskeletal tissues. The role of MSCs is to reduce inflammation, gliosis, and oxidative stress, while encouraging angiogenesis, neuronal proliferation, cell survival, and differentiation. While autologous MSCs have homologous advantages, they present with challenges related to donor predisposition, harvesting skills, and processing times. In this regard, allogenic MSCs show promise, but face ethical challenges, contamination, and survival risks. Ongoing efforts

Narrative format, in the form of an invented short story, is used to convey several essential truths in a didactic essay in Neuropsychiatry. Messages, in memorable form, emerge at several levels. Narrative format is essential in biographical medicine and it could be attractive to students at various levels of learning. There are great values and some dangers in biographical science.

The COVID-19 pandemic generated a distinctive body of narrative writing that sought to make sense of front-line medical experience under conditions of uncertainty and crisis. This article examines Emma Goldberg's Life on the Line: Young Doctors Come of Age in the Pandemic (2021) as a mediated, multivoiced account of early career physicians navigating professional, ethical and embodied transformation during COVID-19. Drawing on Narrative Medicine and Medical Humanities scholarship, the analysis introduces the concept of the 'third object' to examine how experience, memory and moral meaning are

Digital health has improved the efficiency of information processing while also changing how patients' illness narratives enter healthcare systems.Patient narrative flattening refers to the excessive compression of patient narratives during digital processing, whereby temporal trajectories, life contexts, value preferences, and other dimensions of illness experience are diminished. It is mainly manifested in the compression of narrative content during expression, the fragmentation of information in clinical documentation, and the fixation of information in subsequent use.Such flattening may constrain

During the past fifteen years, the relationship between literature and medical ethics has evolved from the occasional use of stories as a substitute for the traditional case study in medical ethics to the emergence of a narrative approach to ethical analysis and decision making. Thus far, literary theory has been more important to narrative medical ethics than have works of literature themselves. Perri Klass's novel Other Women's Children deserves special scrutiny, however, because an analysis of it demonstrates ways that a narrative approach could enhance traditional philosophical and legal a

This article analyses how Egyptian novels construct experiences of medicine, care and institutional authority through comparative close readings of Naguib Mahfouz's The Day the Leader Was Killed, Youssef Ziedan's Azazeel, Ahmed Mourad's The Blue Elephant and Nawal El Saadawi's Woman at Point Zero Situated in medical humanities, it treats literature as narrative knowledge production, articulating ethical and experiential dimensions of medicine beyond empirical documentation. Drawing on narrative and institutional theory, the article develops a four-part analytical vocabulary-bureaucratic waitin

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) often experience delays in initiating advance care planning (ACP) and palliative care (PC) which can impact their autonomy as cognitive function declines. Because patient autonomy and decision-making in ACP and PC for individuals with PD is insufficiently explored, this systematic review with narrative synthesis aims to fill this gap by reviewing the existing literature on these topics. It examines how awareness and timing influences ACP and PC implementation, how illness narratives shape decision-making and autonomy perceptions and the rol

What is Humanities in Medicine? ONCOLOGY dives beyond clinical metrics of survival rates and molecular pathways and explores the narrative medicine of diagnosis, the ethical complexities of end-of-life care, and the psychological impact of chronic illness on both patients and practitioners. This section aims to enhance provider empathy, mitigate burnout, and center the patient's lived experience within the rigorous framework of medical science.
