Neurologic complications after high-dose chemotherapy and autologous bone marrow transplantation for Hodgkin's disease.

We analyzed 168 consecutive patients with Hodgkin's disease who were treated at the University of Nebraska Medical Center between 1985 and 1990 with high-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous bone marrow transplantation (BMT) or peripheral stem-cell transplantation (PSCT), and describe their neurologic complications. All these patients had relapsed or had failed to achieve a remission with initial chemotherapy. Early complications, defined as those occurring during the first 6 weeks following the transplantation, occurred in 65 patients (39%) and included encephalopathy, seizures, psychiatr

Evaluation of field propagation of Muscidifurax zaraptor (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) for control of flies associated with confined beef cattle.

The parasitic wasp Muscidifurax zaraptor Kogan & Legner was mass-reared in the field to control house flies, Musca domestica L., on two Nebraska beef cattle confinements. About 50,000 freeze-killed house fly pupae were exposed to a single release of M. zaraptor in the field. Placement of six additional cohorts of 50,000 freeze-killed pupae at the release sites at 2-wk intervals resulted in a mean parasite emergence of 56.4% over the study period. Mean fly mortality of 37.3 and 25.9% occurred in sentinel pupae placed around the perimeter of two release sites, compared with 3.9% for two control

Carotid body: a new target for rescuing neural control of cardiorespiratory balance in disease.

Significant insight into the mechanisms involved in chronic heart failure (CHF) have been provided by Schultz and his associates at the University of Nebraska Medical Center with the use of pacing-induced heart failure rabbits. Critical among the CHF mechanisms was the role of the carotid body (CB). The stimulated CB produces a wide array of systemic reflex responses; certainly those in the cardiopulmonary (CP) system are the most important in CHF. This generates a question as to whether the CB could serve as a target for some kind of treatment to reestablish control of cardiorespiratory balan

Effects of Moraxella (Branhamella) ovis culture filtrates on bovine erythrocytes, peripheral mononuclear cells, and corneal epithelial cells.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is a highly contagious ocular disease that affects cattle of all ages and that occurs worldwide. Piliated hemolytic Moraxella bovis is recognized as the etiologic agent of IBK. According to data from the Nebraska Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System, however, Moraxella (Branhamella) ovis has been isolated with increasing frequency from cattle affected with IBK. The objective of this study was, therefore, to examine M. ovis field isolates for the presence of the putative virulence factors of M. bovis. Culture filtrates from selected M. ovis field

La Crosse virus neuroinvasive disease - Missouri, 2009.

La Crosse virus (LACV), a California serogroup bunyavirus, is a leading cause of pediatric arboviral encephalitis in the United States and is transmitted primarily by the eastern treehole mosquito (Aedes triseriatus). On August 7, 2009, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (MDHSS) was notified of suspected LACV neuroinvasive disease in a boy aged 8 years from northwest Missouri. Laboratory testing at CDC confirmed LACV infection. An environmental inspection identified multiple vector habitats, including tree holes and discarded tires within a 300-foot radius of the patient's h

Pan-Viral Sequencing Surveillance Identifies Mammalian Orthoreovirus 2 in United States Wastewater.

Mammalian orthoreoviruses (MRVs) are segmented, double-stranded RNA viruses that infect a broad range of mammalian hosts, including humans. Although MRVs have been detected in wastewater in parts of Southeast Asia, they have not previously been reported in U.S. wastewater. Using the VirCapSeq-VERT pan-viral sequencing assay, we identified MRV type 2 (MRV-2) in a wastewater sample collected in March 2024 from the United States Air Force Academy. Complete genome sequences were recovered for all 10 segments. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the virus clustered most closely with an MRV isolate re

The effects of shoe traction and obstacle height on lower extremity coordination dynamics during walking.

This study aims to investigate the effects of shoe traction and obstacle height on lower extremity relative phase dynamics (analysis of intralimb coordination) during walking to better understand the mechanisms employed to avoid slippage following obstacle clearance. Ten participants walked at a self-selected pace during eight conditions: four obstacle heights (0%, 10%, 20%, and 40% of limb length) while wearing two pairs of shoes (low and high traction). A coordination analysis was used and phasing relationships between lower extremity segments were examined. The results demonstrated that sig

The Psychosocial Challenges of Caring for Patients with Ebola Virus Disease.

Caring for highly infectious patients in biocontainment units is a new phenomenon, and little is known about the behavioral health of workers in this setting. This is a qualitative study exploring the unique experiences of workers involved in the care of patients with Ebola virus disease (EVD) at Nebraska Medicine during the 2014 Ebola outbreak. Twenty-one in-depth interviews were conducted focused on topics of personal memories, interpersonal experiences, stress response, and patient management. Five themes were identified: (1) positive experiences were emotional while challenges were technic

Quantitative risk assessment of foods containing peanut advisory labeling.

Foods with advisory labeling (i.e. "may contain") continue to be prevalent and the warning may be increasingly ignored by allergic consumers. We sought to determine the residual levels of peanut in various packaged foods bearing advisory labeling, compare similar data from 2005 and 2009, and determine any potential risk for peanut-allergic consumers. Of food products bearing advisory statements regarding peanut or products that had peanut listed as a minor ingredient, 8.6% and 37.5% contained detectable levels of peanut (>2.5 ppm whole peanut), respectively. Peanut-allergic individuals should

Small frogs get their worms first: the role of nonodonate arthropods in the recruitment of Haematoloechus coloradensis and Haematoloechus complexus in newly metamorphosed northern leopard frogs, Rana pipiens, and woodhouse's toads, Bufo woodhousii.

Studies on the life cycles and epizootiology of North American frog lung flukes indicate that most species utilize odonates as second intermediate hosts; adult frogs become infected by ingesting odonate intermediate hosts. Newly metamorphosed frogs are rarely infected with these parasites, predominantly because they are gape-limited predators that cannot feed on large intermediate hosts such as dragonflies. We examined the role of the frog diet and potential intermediate hosts in the recruitment of the frog lung fluke, Haematoloechus coloradensis, to metamorphosed northern leopard frogs (Rana

Predictors of urinary tract infection based on artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Among women who present with urinary complaints, only 50% are found to have urinary tract infection. Individual urinary symptoms and urinalysis are not sufficiently accurate to discriminate those with and without the diagnosis. METHODS: We used artificial neural networks (ANN) coupled with genetic algorithms to evolve combinations of clinical variables optimized for predicting urinary tract infection. The ANN were applied to 212 women ages 19-84 who presented to an ambulatory clinic with urinary complaints. Urinary tract infection was defined in separate models as uropathogen coun

Economic and environmental analysis of retrofitting a large office building with energy-efficient lighting systems.

An evaluation of the economic and environmental costs and benefits that would result if the Zorinsky Federal Building, located in Omaha, Nebraska, USA, converted its current lighting system to a more energy-efficient system (i.e., joined the EPA's Green Lights Program) was conducted. Lighting accounts for 20-25 percent of all electricity sold in the United States. Costs considered in the study included the cost of retrofitting the building's existing lighting system and the cost of disposal of the current lamps and ballast fixtures. Benefits included a reduction of electric utility costs and a

Attaching and effacing Escherichia coli infections in calves, pigs, lambs, and dogs.

Attaching and effacing Escherichia coli (AEEC) adhere to mucosal epithelium in both small and large intestine and induce a distinctive lesion characterized by an irregular scalloped appearance of the epithelial layer. Infection with attaching and effacing E. coli was detected in 14 calves, 7 pigs, 2 lambs, and 3 dogs. Affected animals were from farms and kennels in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Ages of affected animals were calves, 2 days to 4 months; pigs, 1-6 weeks; lambs, 1 week; and dogs, 7-8 weeks. Clinical signs included diarrhea in all animals, but other nonent
