Neck Muscles and Content of Carotid Artery as Reference Tissue for Strain Ratio - a Novel Approach to Improve the Diagnostic Performance of Thyroid Elastography?

Measurement of thyroid nodule stiffness by strain elastography already showed promising results. The aim of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of elastography in predicting thyroid cancer by determination of strain ratio comparing nodule stiffness with thyroid tissue and surrounding neck tissues as well (carotid artery, neck muscles). Totally, 310 thyroid nodules in 275 patients were examined by conventional ultrasound and elastography prior to aspiration biopsy. 22(7.1%) thyroid carcinomas were histologically confirmed and included in the study. 39 benign nodules (27 confirm

Electromyographic activity of neck muscles in patients affected by retrocollis under the influence of stimulation and coagulation of the prestitial nucleus of the midbrain.

In 2 patients with retrocollis, the positive effects obtained by stereotactic high frequency coagulation of the prestitial nucleus on the tonic activity of the neck muscle were studied electromyographically and clinically. Before the stereotactic therapy, electromyographic recordings at rest were recorded from the musculi splenii. During stimulation of the prestitial nucleus at frequencies of 8, 25 and 50 Hz, the EMG activity at rest diminished in frequency and amplitude and ultimately disappeared. Passage from the EMG recordings at rest to electrical silence took place, in one case, though a

Cervical Myelopathy Associated With Deep Neck Muscle Rhabdomyolysis After Polysubstance Abuse: A Case Report.

Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially life-threatening syndrome caused by skeletal muscle breakdown and the release of intracellular contents into circulation, often resulting in complications such as acute kidney injury. Although it most commonly affects the limbs, rhabdomyolysis of the deep neck muscles is rare and can lead to secondary cervical myelopathy. Recent reports have highlighted a strong association with polysubstance abuse, particularly combinations of opioids with sedatives such as benzodiazepines or pregabalin. We describe a 41-year-old female patient who developed acute quadriparesis

Stretching and muscle-performance exercises for chronic nonspecific neck pain: who may benefit most?

BACKGROUND: Although exercise is the mainstay of treatment for neck pain (NP), uncertainty remains over optimal decision-making concerning who may benefit most from such, particularly in the long term. OBJECTIVE: To identify the subgroup of patients with nonspecific NP most likely to benefit from stretching and muscle-performance exercises. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of treatment outcomes of 70 patients (10 of whom dropped out) with a primary complaint of nonspecific NP in one treatment arm of a prospective, randomized, controlled trial. All patients performed the exercises, twic

Cervical Myelopathy Associated with Deep Neck Muscle Rhabdomyolysis after Polysubstance Abuse: A Case Report.

When used appropriately, buprenorphine and oxycodone are safe drugs. They are, however, widely abused in combination with other drugs. Here we describe a case series of 8 patients with cervical myelopathy and rhabdomyolysis of the adjacent deep neck muscles after using an opioid in combination with other drugs. All patients were young males who had a previous history of polysubstance abuse. Six of the patients had used buprenorphine in combination with pregabalin and/or benzodiazepines, and one patient had used oxycodone with pregabalin and/or benzodiazepines. One patient used buprenorphine wi

Association of a femoral neck T score with knee joint osteophyte formation but not with skeletal muscle mass.

BACKGROUND: Osteophyte formation is an important radiographic sign of osteoarthritis (OA) and limited joint motion in knee osteoarthritis patients. Some studies revealed relationships of osteophyte formation with a high bone mineral density and a high muscle mass, while others showed no correlations. The aim of this study was to identify relationships of osteophyte formation with bone mineral density and muscle mass. METHODS: A cross sectional study of knee osteoarthritis was conducted. Cases were classified as patients with osteophyte formation, while controls were those without osteophytes.

Significance of dorsal bladder neck involvement in predicting the progression of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Accurately predicting of progression is important for patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). We previously reported that bladder neck involvement (BNI) was significantly associated with progression of NMIBC. In this study, we evaluated the prognostic significance of the detailed BNI location in NMIBC patients. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 651 patients diagnosed with primary NMIBC at a single center between 2000 and 2018. Using the detailed BNI location, patients were divided into the following three groups: dorsal BNI (BNId; 4 to 8 o'clock position), ven

Poor Vitamin Status is Associated with Skeletal Muscle Loss and Mucositis in Head and Neck Cancer Patients.

Mucositis and muscle wasting are two common toxicity effects of cancer treatment in head and neck cancer (HNC). There is limited data evaluating cancer treatment toxicities in relation to vitamin status. This study aimed to assess changes in vitamin status during HNC treatment in relation to body composition, inflammation and mucositis. In this prospective cohort study, dietary intakes (3-day food record), plasma levels of vitamins and C-reactive protein (CRP) were assessed at baseline (at diagnosis) and post-treatment (after 6⁻8 weeks of radiation therapy with or without chemotherapy). Neck muscle activity in fighter pilots wearing night-vision equipment during simulated flight.

INTRODUCTION: Night-vision goggles (NVG) in jet fighter aircraft appear to increase the risk of neck strain due to increased neck loading. The present aim was, therefore, to evaluate the effect on neck-muscle activity and subjective ratings of head-worn night-vision (NV) equipment in controlled simulated flights. METHODS: Five experienced fighter pilots twice flew a standardized 2.5-h program in a dynamic flight simulator; one session with NVG and one with standard helmet mockup (control session). Each session commenced with a 1-h simulation at 1 Gz followed by a 1.5-h dynamic flight with rep
