PURPOSE: To assess the ultrasonographic features affect accuracy of extrathyroid extension (ETE) evaluation on preoperative ultrasonography (US) in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC).
METHODS: Of the total patients who underwent thyroid surgery, 516 patients with a tumor measuring less than 1 cm on preoperative US were enrolled in this study. One blinded head and neck radiologist reviewed the preoperative US images to evaluate the US features of PTMC, and the pathologic reports were reviewed. Ultrastructural evaluation of skin biopsies has been utilized for diagnosis of mitochondrial disease. This study investigates how frequently skin biopsies reveal mitochondrial abnormalities, correlates skin and muscle biopsy findings, and describes clinical diagnoses rendered following the evaluation. A retrospective review of surgical pathology reports from 1990 to 2015 identified skin biopsies examined by electron microscopy for suspected metabolic disease. The detection of serodiscordant syphilis test results raises several important clinical and public health questions. Based on our retrospective review, the probability of neurosyphilis in persons with serodiscordant serologies is low. The probability of ophthalmic syphilis may be higher, but we lack objective measures for that diagnosis.

Certain problems and pitfalls attend the use of the alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) assay for the prenatal diagnosis of neural tube defects (NTDs). Analysis of 2495 consecutive cases revealed 57 (2.3%) with amniotic fluid AFP levels greater than 3 SD above the mean. Fetal deaths (9), various fetal abnormalities, (7) and spontaneous abortions (4) occurred among this group. OBJECTIVES: Gram negative bloodstream infections (GN BSI) are a leading cause of mortality worldwide, and antibiotic treatment approaches remain understudied. BALANCE+ is a perpetual Bayesian adaptive platform trial to test multiple treatment questions for hospitalised patients with GN BSI.
