Identification and Treatment of Catatonia Presenting as Agitation and Self Injury in an Adolescent With Rett Syndrome.

Catatonia is a complex psychomotor syndrome associated with several psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia and autism. It is also associated with neurologic conditions such as encephalitis and epilepsy. Catatonia has also been described in genetic syndromes such as Down Syndrome. Catatonia presents with two main subtypes. Retarded catatonia is characterized by stupor, immobility, mutism, rigidity, and withdrawal, as well as negativism, posturing, and echolalia/echopraxia. Excited catatonia is primarily characterized by psychomotor agitation and occasionally self-injurious behaviors. Th

Oncosexology - selected issues taking into account the problem of sexological care of patients with cancer.

Different findings suggest that the serotonin (5-HT) system may be involved in both the regulation of aggression and the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Our study aimed to evaluate the aggressive features of a group of OCD patients and to explore possible correlations with a serotonergic marker, namely platelet 5-HT transporter. Psychopathological and biological patterns were compared with those of a group of healthy controls and those of patients with major depression. Twenty-one patients affected by OCD, 21 by depression and 21 healthy controls were included in the st

Hostility, depression and incident cardiac events in the GAZEL cohort.

BACKGROUND: Psychological factors such as hostility and depression have been associated with cardiovascular disease. However, their role in predicting incident cardiac events independently one of another is not clear. METHODS: Among 10,304 GAZEL middle-aged workers free of cardiovascular diseases in 1993, 581 incident cardiac events were validated from 1994-2014. Hostile traits (cognitive hostility, behavioral hostility, irritability and negativism) were assessed with the Buss and Durkee Hostility Inventory at baseline. Depressive symptoms were assessed at baseline and every three years with

Why do neurologists miss catatonia in neurology emergency? A case series and brief literature review.

Catatonia is a well-described clinical syndrome characterized by features that range from mutism, negativism and stupor to agitation, mannerisms and stereotype. Causes of catatonia may range from organic brain disorders to psychiatric conditions. Despite a characteristic syndrome, catatonia is grossly under diagnosed. The reason for missed diagnosis of catatonia in neurology setting is not clear. Poor awareness is an unlikely cause because catatonia is taught among conditions with deregulated consciousness like vegetative state, locked-in state and akinetic mutism. We determined the proportion

[Catatonia].

In the new classification of the DSM-V, catatonia is individualized as a disease of its own. It is defined by presence of at least two out of five criteria: motor immobility, negativism, echolalia or echopraxia, sterile motor activity, atypical movements. The priority is to look first for organic causes: the main ones are neurologic disorders. Intoxication may also be found (illegal drugs or medication), and the role of neuroleptic malignant syndrome in catatonia remains unclear. Among the psychiatric causes, first come bipolar disorders, especially mania; then schizophrenia. Idiopathic forms

Adolescents' perceptions of the quality of interpersonal relationships and eating disorder symptom severity: The mediating role of low self-esteem and negative mood.

Few studies have examined how the perceived quality of multiple interpersonal relationships is related to eating disorder (ED) symptom severity in adolescents and how psychological variables might influence these associations. The aim of this study is to determine whether the perceived level of trust, communication, and alienation in the relationship with one's mother, father, and peers are predictive of ED severity in adolescent females and to test the mediating effects of low self-esteem and negative mood on these associations. Adolescent females aged 12 to 18 (N = 186) with a diagnosis of A

Negative cognitive styles as risk factors for the occurrence of PMS and PMDD.

Background: The purpose of our study is to verify whether elements of cognitive vulnerability to affective disorders may enhance the occurrence of PMS/PMDD. Methods: In total, 293 women with regular cycles took part in the study. The subjects were exposed to failure during the follicular phase or luteal phase, as appropriate, and the attributional style of failure, cognitive triad inventory (CTI) and presence of biased information processing were determined. The mood of the subjects before and after failure was measured, and the depressive mood was screened by CES-D. The occurrence of PMS/PMDD

Microbiological Investigation and Clinical Efficacy of Professional Topical Fluoride Application on Streptococcus mutans and Selemonas sputigena in Orthodontic Patients: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

Fluoride prophylaxis is a cornerstone in preventing dental caries, a disease for which orthodontic patients are at high risk due to the reduced effectiveness of home oral hygiene and increased plaque accumulation. Recent evidence defines caries as polymicrobial, involving Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacilli, and emerging species such as Selenomonas sputigena. This prospective, randomized, controlled study evaluated professional topical fluoride in the form of gel and varnish in 68 patients aged 8-17 years wearing fixed orthodontic appliances. Participants were divided into three equal groups: t

Comparing Heterologous and Homologous COVID-19 Vaccination: A Longitudinal Study of Antibody Decay.

The humoral response after vaccination was evaluated in 1248 individuals who received different COVID-19 vaccine schedules. The study compared subjects primed with adenoviral ChAdOx1-S (ChAd) and boosted with BNT162b2 (BNT) mRNA vaccines (ChAd/BNT) to homologous dosing with BNT/BNT or ChAd/ChAd vaccines. Serum samples were collected at two, four and six months after vaccination, and anti-Spike IgG responses were determined. The heterologous vaccination induced a more robust immune response than the two homologous vaccinations. ChAd/BNT induced a stronger immune response than ChAd/ChAd at all t

Multidrug-resistant Gram-negative post-neurosurgical meningitis and the role of intraventricular colistin: a case series.

The aim of this study was to report the clinical experience of intraventricular colistin for the treatment of multi-resistant Gram-negative post-surgical meningitis in a tertiary hospital. Post-neurosurgical meningitis (PNM) is one of the life-threatening complications of neurosurgical procedures, and is frequently sustained by Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Here we describe our experience of five cases of PNM caused by gram-negative multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria, treated with intraventricular (IVT) colistin, admitted to the Neurosurgery Unit of A.R.N.A.S. UNLABELLED: Intestinal microsporidiosis caused by Enterocytozoon bieneusi is an opportunistic infection that especially affects solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients. Management revolves around tapering the immunosuppressive regimen and/or using a specific anti-microsporidia treatment, but only fumagillin has demonstrated efficacy for treatment of this infection. Since fumagillin has been commercially discontinued, nitazoxanide is increasingly being used in this indication. We aimed to describe therapeutic management of E. bieneusi infections in this context. We conducted a French nationwide
