A Duoethnographic study of professional identity negotiation by two returned art theory teachers in Chinese higher education.

INTRODUCTION: Internationalization requires returned academics to reconsider pedagogical commitments developed across different educational contexts. This study explored how two returned university art theory teachers in southern China negotiated professional identities while adapting their teaching to changing classroom conditions. METHODS: A duoethnographic design brought one teacher's contemporaneous reflections into dialogue with the other's retrospective accounts of comparable early-career experiences. Dialogues, reflective accounts, observation notes, and teaching materials were examine

Sensorimotor adaptation to sustained lower visual field occlusion during continuous locomotion with and without obstacle negotiation.

The importance of having visual feedback of the lower-limb to locomotion control, has typically been examined by intermittently occluding the lower visual field (lvf) in repeated obstacle crossing trials. A consistent finding is that foot clearance increases following lvf occlusion. However, there is some evidence that the increase in clearance diminishes with further repetition. This calls into question the importance of lvf feedback in the control of locomotion. We present two studies investigating how foot clearance is affected as a result of sustained lvf occlusion during continuous locomo

High-Stakes Treatment Negotiations Gone Awry: The Importance of Interactions for Understanding Treatment Advocacy and Patient Resistance.

Doctors (and sociologists) have a long history of struggling to understand why patients seek medical help yet resist treatment recommendations. Explanations for resistance have pointed to macrostructural changes, such as the rise of the engaged patient or decline of physician authority. Rather than assuming that concepts such as resistance, authority, or engagement are exogenous phenomena transmitted via conversational conduits, we examine how they are dynamically co-constituted interactionally. Using conversation analysis to analyze a videotaped interaction of an oncology patient resisting th

Are You Ready to Negotiate Your First Employment Contract? Experience of More Than 700 Plastic Surgeons.

BACKGROUND: Plastic surgeons have been shown to be unprepared to negotiate their first employment contracts. Previous survey studies have attempted to assess plastic surgeons' first employment contracts to outline common pitfalls in contract negotiation. With this study, the authors aim to expand these previous studies and help plastic surgeons become prepared to negotiate their employment contracts. METHODS: A seven-question, cross-sectional survey was sent to attending-level surgeon members of the California Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Texas So

Experience-related differences in eye movement characteristics during supervised walking and stair negotiation in physical therapists.

[Purpose] This study examined the eye movement characteristics of physical therapists during supervised level walking and stair negotiation and explored whether these characteristics differed according to clinical experience. [Participants and Methods] Twenty-seven physical therapists performed supervised level walking, and eighteen performed supervised stair negotiation while wearing a head-mounted eye tracker. Eye movement speed and binocular combined angle deviation were analyzed during each task. [Results] Right-eye movement speed during supervised level walking was descriptively higher in

NegotiAge-An AI-Based Caregiver Negotiation Training: Results From the Multiphase Optimization Strategy (MOST) Trial.

BACKGROUND: Family caregivers experience conflicts in caring for people with Alzheimer's dementia (PWD; e.g., siblings disagreeing, advocating with providers, PWD refusing assistance). Subsequently, family caregivers experience frustration, burden, and stress. Furthermore, these caregivers rarely receive formal conflict resolution training to ameliorate these concerns. We developed NegotiAge-an artificial intelligence (AI)-based negotiation training intervention that teaches caregivers how to resolve conflicts and provides the opportunity to practice negotiating with online avatars in real-wor

Smartphone-Based Analysis for Early Detection of Aging Impact on Gait and Stair Negotiation: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Aging is associated with gradual mobility decline, often undetected until it affects daily life. This study investigates the potential of smartphone-based accelerometry to detect early age-related changes in gait and stair performance in middle-aged adults. Eighty-eight healthy participants were divided into four age groups: young (20-35 years), early middle-aged (45-54 years), late middle-aged (55-65 years), and older adults (65-80 years). They completed single-task, cognitive, and physical dual-task gait assessments and stair negotiation tests. While single-task walking did not reveal early

Stochastic galvanic vestibular stimulation improves kinetic performance in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis during obstacle negotiation.

Vestibular dysfunction has been reported as a potential cause in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). However, it remained unclear how stochastic galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) affected kinetic performance of patients with AIS. This study aimed to investigate the effect of stochastic GVS on ground reaction forces (GRF) measures during obstacle negotiation among patients with AIS. Fifteen patients with AIS and 15 age/sex-matched healthy controls (HC) participated in this study. Stochastic GVS was applied via electrodes placed over bilateral mastoid process with the intensity of 80% of

Obstacle negotiation while dual-tasking in children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD): An augmented-reality approach.

BACKGROUND: Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) exhibit deficits in predictive motor control, balance, and aspects of cognitive control, which are important for safely negotiating obstacles while walking. As concurrent performance of cognitive and motor tasks (dual-tasking) may exacerbate these deficits, we examined motor and cognitive dual-tasking differences between children with DCD and their typically developing (TD) peers during obstacle negotiation. METHODS: 34 children aged 6-12 years (16 TD, 18 DCD) walked along a 12 m path, stepping over an obstacle (30 % or 50 %

Stable Delay Period Representations in the Posterior Parietal Cortex Facilitate Working-Memory-Guided Obstacle Negotiation.

In complex environments, information about surrounding obstacles is stored in working memory (WM) and used to coordinate appropriate movements for avoidance. In quadrupeds, this WM system is particularly important for guiding hindleg stepping, as an animal can no longer see the obstacle underneath the body following foreleg clearance. Such obstacle WM involves the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), as deactivation of area 5 incurs WM deficits, precluding successful avoidance. However, the neural underpinnings of this involvement remain undefined. To reveal the neural substrates of this behavior,

Mild Cognitive Impairment Affects Obstacle Negotiation in Older Adults: Results from "Gait and Brain Study".

BACKGROUND: Older adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) are at higher risk of falls and injuries, but the underlying mechanism is poorly understood. Inappropriate anticipatory postural adjustments to overcome balance perturbations are affected by cognitive decline. However, it is unknown whether anticipatory gait control to avoid an obstacle is affected in MCI. OBJECTIVE: Using the dual-task paradigm, we aim to assess whether gait control is affected during obstacle negotiation challenges in older adults with MCI. METHODS: Seventy-nine participants (mean age = 72.0 ± 2.7 years; women =

Living With Prophylactic ICD Therapy and the Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death: How Patients Negotiate Solutions and Problems.

Prophylactic implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) therapy treats potentially lethal cardiac arrhythmias in patients who have not previously experienced such but are at considerable risk due to underlying heart disease. Most patients are unaware of their risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) until the ICD is introduced to them. Thus, the problem of risk of death and the solution of ICD therapy are presented simultaneously. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Danish hospitals, this article illustrates how clinicians narrate prophylactic ICD therapy as a benign therapy preventing risk of deat

A Users' Guide to 'Juice Bars' and 'Liquid Handcuffs': Fluid Negotiations of Subjectivity, Space and the Substance of Methadone Treatment.

The contested space of addiction treatment is a space of intersections and inscriptions, a space where the biopolitics of treatment practice meets strategies of sociospatial stigmatization projected by the surrounding community. Drawing from a case study of community conflict surrounding the relocation of a methadone clinic into Corktown, a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood on the peripheries of downtown Toronto, this articles explores the sociospatial dimensions of addiction treatment through a theoretical and ethnographic investigation of client impressions regarding the space of the methadon

Negotiating participation in conversations about care planning between people living with mild neurocognitive disorders and their healthcare proxies: a single case analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The time between diagnosis with a mild neurocognitive disorder (MND) and definitive loss of decisional capacity presents a window of opportunity to participate in advance care planning (ACP). To implement early planning, we need to know how to promote healthy relationships between people with MND and their healthcare proxies. Our objective is to examine how people with MND and their proxies discuss engagement in ACP and how proxies orient toward the ability and right of the person with MND to provide answers. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We undertake a conversation

Whose Knowledge Counts in Labour? Obstetric Nurses Negotiating Clinical Judgement, Algorithmic Authority and Woman-Centred Care in Artificial Intelligence-Enhanced Foetal Monitoring.

Artificial intelligence-enhanced foetal monitoring is entering intrapartum care, yet little is known about how it reshapes the credibility of nursing knowledge, professional authority and relational practice. This interpretive description study explored how obstetric nurses negotiated clinical judgement, autonomy and woman-centred care while working with an artificial intelligence-enhanced cardiotocography system in a physician-led tertiary maternity service in Saudi Arabia. Semi-structured interviews with 18 obstetric nurses, each with 6 months to 4 years' experience of the system, were analy
