A comparison of two different anthelmintic treatment regimens against natural gastrointestinal nematode infections on two Lithuanian sheep farms.

BACKGROUND: According to targeted treatment (TT), the whole flock is dewormed based on knowledge of the risk, or parameters that quantify the mean level of infection, whereas according to targeted selective treatment (TST), only individual animals within the grazing group are treated, based on parasitological, production and/or morbidity parameters. The aim of this study was to compare two different treatment protocols on sheep farms in Lithuania. The study was conducted from 15 April to 31 October 2014 on three sheep farms. On the TT (the whole flock) and T(S)T (with FECs ≥ 300, respectively)

Mucosal Immunity of Major Gastrointestinal Nematode Infections in Small Ruminants Can Be Harnessed to Develop New Prevention Strategies.

Gastrointestinal parasitic nematode (GIN) infections are the cause of severe losses to farmers in countries where small ruminants such as sheep and goat are the mainstay of livestock holdings. There is a need to develop effective and easy-to-administer anti-parasite vaccines in areas where anthelmintic resistance is rapidly rising due to the inefficient use of drugs currently available. In this review, we describe the most prevalent and economically significant group of GIN infections that infect small ruminants and the immune responses that occur in the host during infection with an emphasis

Epidemiologic findings on canine and feline intestinal nematode infections from records of the Iowa state University Veterinary Clinic.

A wealth of data was available on intestinal nematode infections of dogs and cats in the Ames, Iowa, practice area served by the Iowa State University Veterinary Clinic. From July 1966 through June 1974, 8.5% of 33,594 dogs and 4.5% of 11,995 cats hospitalized for 1 or more days were recorded as infected with at least 1 type of intestinal nematode. For both dogs and cats, infection rates were generally higher in males than in females and in those that were sexually intact, compared with those that were neutered. The highest prevalence of hookworm infections in both dogs and cats was recorded i

Can nematode infection cause internal bleeding in dogs? A case of Dirofilaria immitis infection in cavitary fluids.

A 9-year-old dog was presented with weight loss, respiratory effort, and an enlarged abdomen. Imaging studies and exploratory surgery showed pulmonary and splenic masses and bi-cavitary effusion, later classified as hemorrhage. Cytology of the peritoneal and pleural fluids also revealed several microfilariae. Immunologic and molecular analyses confirmed Dirofilaria immitis infection and histopathology of the spleen indicated a cavernous endothelial proliferation with undefined etiology (hemangiosarcoma vs reaction to parasite infestation). The nematode larvae are speculated to have entered bod

Female-biased infection and transmission of the gastrointestinal nematode Trichuris arvicolae infecting the common vole, Microtus arvalis.

Previous studies addressing the importance of host gender in parasite transmission have shed light on males as the more important hosts, with the higher transmission potential of males being explained by the fact that they often harbour higher parasite loads than females. However, in some systems females are more heavily infected than males and may be responsible for driving infection under such circumstances. Using a wild population of common voles (Microtus arvalis), we showed that females were more frequently infected by the intestinal nematode Trichuris arvicolae than males (i.e. prevalenc

The effect of the availability of latrines on soil-transmitted nematode infections in the plantation sector in Sri Lanka.

The relationship of soil-transmitted nematode infections to the availability of latrines was studied among 1,614 children 3-12 years of age living on plantations in Sri Lanka. The majority (89.7%) of the children had at least one type of soil-transmitted nematode. There was a significantly lower mean count of hookworm eggs for children coming from plantations with good sanitary facilities. For Ascaris and Trichuris, a similar association was observed between the mean egg count and the availability of latrines for children from the low-country plantations, where people live in more scattered se

Hirschmanniella mucronata Effector HmENG1 Interacts with OsGAPDH to Promote Nematode Infection in Rice.

β-1,4-Endoglucanase (ENG) is a canonical effector protein secreted by the esophageal glands of plant-parasitic nematodes. Homology analysis identified a β-1,4-endoglucanase homolog in Hirschmanniella mucronata, designated as HmENG1. In situ hybridization demonstrated the specific localization of Hmeng1 transcripts within the esophageal glands of H. mucronata. Recombinant HmENG1 exhibited cellulase activity in vitro. In planta RNAi experiments confirmed that silencing Hmeng1 significantly reduced the infection capability of H. mucronata. In addition to its potential role in degrading plant cell

Metabolic response to anthelmintic treatment in beef cattle with subclinical gastrointestinal nematode infection.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) represent a recurring challenge for beef cattle production, because infections are predominantly subclinical and current diagnostic tools have limited ability to detect affected animals before significant losses to the production chain occur. With the advent of new technologies, it has become possible to obtain a wide range of information from animal serum. Through metabolomics, it is possible to expand knowledge of the host-parasite relationship, identify biomarkers with diagnostic potential, and prospect new molecules that may aid in treatment. Thus, the pre

Fexinidazole and Corallopyronin A target Wolbachia-infected sheath cells present in filarial nematodes.

The discovery of the endosymbiotic bacteria Wolbachia as an obligate symbiont of filarial nematodes has led to antibiotic-based treatments for filarial diseases. While lab and clinical studies have yielded promising results, recent animal studies reveal that Wolbachia levels may rebound following treatment with suboptimal doses of the antibiotic rifampicin. Previous work showed that a likely source of the bacterial rebound in females were dense clusters of Wolbachia in ovarian tissue. The number, size, and density of these Wolbachia clusters were not diminished despite antibiotic treatment. He

Infectivity of gastrointestinal nematode parasites of sika deer (Cervus nippon) for calves and lambs.

Sika deer, mainly of Japanese origin, have been introduced into the British Isles and central Europe and established free-ranging populations, expanding in several countries. Introduction of the sika deer was associated with the transfer of Spiculopteragia houdemeri which has been reported for the first time in 2003 from Germany and thereafter from sika deer and other cervid species in some countries in Europe. Surveys of livestock parasites have shown that cervid-specific gastrointestinal nematodes of native deer occur in natural infections in cattle and sheep, usually at low level, and infec

The Effects of Bacillus subtilis Expressing a Plant Elicitor Peptide on Nematode Infection on Soybean.

There is a pressing need to develop alternative management strategies for the soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines), the most costly pathogen to soybeans. Plant elicitor peptides (PEPs), which are produced by plants in response to stress and stimulate broad-spectrum disease resistance, were previously shown to reduce soybean cyst nematode infection on soybeans when applied as a seed treatment. Here, we introduce an alternative method to deliver PEPs to soybean using a common plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium, Bacillus subtilis, as a bacterial expression system. Similar to the empty v

Limited role of mast cells during infection with the parasitic nematode Litomosoides sigmodontis.

Mast cells are innate effector cells that due to their localization in the tissue form the first line of defense against parasites. We have previously shown that specifically mucosal mast cells were essential for the termination of the intestinal Strongyloides ratti infection. Here, we analyze the impact of mast cells on the immune response and defense against the tissue-dwelling filarial nematode Litomosoides sigmodontis using mast cell-deficient Cpa3cre mice. Despite an increase and an activation of mast cells at the site of infection in wildtype BALB/c mice the outcome of L. sigmodontis inf

Dirofilaria repens Nematode Infection with Microfilaremia in Traveler Returning to Belgium from Senegal.

We report human infection with a Dirofilaria repens nematode likely acquired in Senegal. An adult worm was extracted from the right conjunctiva of the case-patient, and blood microfilariae were detected, which led to an initial misdiagnosis of loiasis. We also observed the complete life cycle of a D. repens nematode in this patient.
