Short-segment nerve conduction studies in the localization of ulnar neuropathy of the elbow: use of flexor carpi ulnaris recordings.

Short-segment nerve conduction studies were performed in 17 limbs with clinical features suggestive of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow. Recording from flexor carpi ulnaris yielded 93% sensitivity, compared with 71.4% when recording from abductor digiti minimi. The rationale underlying the technique is discussed. This approach should be of value as a diagnostic adjunct in technically challenging cases of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow.

Unveiling the Role of Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) in Detecting Subclinical Peripheral Neuropathy in Autoimmune Disorders: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral neuropathy, characterized by nerve damage, often presents with symptoms like pain, tingling, and muscle weakness. However, in its subclinical form, these symptoms may be subtle or absent, making early detection challenging. This is particularly concerning in patients with autoimmune connective tissue disorders (ACTDs), where the immune system attacks the body's tissues, potentially leading to nerve damage. Early identification and management are crucial to prevent the progression from subclinical to clinical neuropathy, which can significantly impair quality of life.

Sensitivity of high-resolution ultrasonography in clinically diagnosed carpal tunnel syndrome patients with hand pain and normal nerve conduction studies.

BACKGROUND: Suspecting carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in patients with hand pain is usual. Considering the variable rate of false-negative results in nerve conduction study (NCS), as a frequent reference confirmatory standard test, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of neuromuscular ultrasound in patients with clinical evidence of CTS and normal NCS. METHODS: It was a diagnostic accuracy study conducted in the outpatient clinic of Rofaydeh Hospital, Tehran, Iran, between July 2012 and December 2016; it recruited clinically diagnosed CTS patients and a control group. All participants u

Reference Value for Infrapatellar Branch of Saphenous Nerve Conduction Study: Cadaveric and Clinical Study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the optimal stimulation and recording site for infrapatellar branch of saphenous nerve (IPBSN) conduction studies by a cadaveric study, and to confirm that obtained location is practically applicable to healthy adults. METHODS: Twelve lower limbs from six cadavers were studied. We defined the optimal stimulation site as the point IPBSN exits the sartorius muscle and the distance or ratio were measured on the X- and Y-axis based on the line connecting the medial and lateral poles of the patella. We defined the optimal recording site as the point where the terminal branc

An assessment of Martin-Gruber anastomosis discrepancies between healthy individuals and patients with carpal tunnel syndrome in motor nerve conduction studies.

Background: The Martin-Gruber anastomosis (MGA) represents a nerve innervation anomaly in the upper extremity, potentially leading to misinterpretation during standard nerve conduction studies (NCSs). This study aims to characterize the electrophysiological attributes of MGA in both healthy subjects and individuals diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Methods: This case-control study involved the electrophysiological assessment of 506 forearms, segregated into two distinct groups: a CTS positive (+) case group and a CTS negative (-) control group. The evaluations were conducted over an

Prediction of lower extremity strength by nerve conduction study in cauda equina syndrome.

An electrodiagnostic test is more useful than the lower extremity isometric strength test for objectively determining the degree of nerve damage and prognosis in cauda equina syndromes (CES). This study evaluated the correlation between nerve conduction study (NCS) parameters and the lower extremity isometric strength and manual muscle test (MMT) grades. The isometric strengths of knee extension (KE), ankle dorsiflexion (ADF), and ankle plantarflexion (APF) were measured. NCS parameters, MMT, and isometric strength of femoral, peroneal, and tibial nerves were evaluated, including their correla
