The effects of hypertonic dextrose injection on connective tissue and nerve conduction through the rabbit carpal tunnel.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of hypertonic dextrose injection on the subsynovial connective tissue (SSCT) in a rabbit model. We hypothesized that dextrose injection would induce proliferation of the SSCT, hinder median nerve conduction, and alter SSCT mechanical properties, similar to what is observed in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). DESIGN: Randomized, controlled prospective study. SETTING: Not applicable. PARTICIPANTS: New Zealand white rabbits (N=28) weighing 4.0 to 4.5kg. INTERVENTION: One forepaw was randomly injected with 0.1mL 10% dextrose solution. The contra

A modified staining method for connective tissue in semi-thin histological sections of peripheral and cranial nerves.

A simple staining method for collagen in semi-thin sections of nerves is described. This technique consists of applying basic fuchsin (0.05%) solution for 2 min. to +/- 1.25 microns plastic resin-embedded sections after routine toluidine blue staining. This staining method clearly demonstrates the amount and orientation of collagenous connective tissue in the nerve, both in transverse and longitudinal sections.

Effect of sciatic nerve crush on local and target tissue production of neurotrophin-3 transcripts in rats.

The effect of sciatic nerve crush in adult rats on neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) mRNA expression at the site of crush and in ipsilateral foot skin was studied using competitive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (cRT-PCR). Mid-sciatic nerve crush resulted in a significant reduction in the expression of NT-3 mRNA in nerve segments distal to the injury site at 3 and 7 days (approximate 60% decrease; P < 0.01). The reduced NT-3 rnRNA expression started to increase at days 14 post-crush and returned towards control levels at 21 days following the crush. The nerve segment proximal to the crush

[Nerve tissue-specific proteins in the assessment of the permeability of the hemato-encephalic barrier in comatose states in children].

The role of functional state of hematoencephalic barrier (HEB) was estimated in terms of development of pathological process in coma. The quantitative determination of neurospecific protein (NSP), exactly of alpha 1 and of alpha 2 cerebral globulins (produced by astrocytes and oligodendroglial cells) was used for estimation of HEB state. The clinical examination of 138 children in comatose state caused by different factor (meningitis, encephalitis, cerebrocranial trauma, infectious toxicosis) was performed. Enzyme immuno-assay of alpha 1 and of alpha 2 cerebral globulins allowed to control HEB

Aetiological aspects of mandibular tooth agenesis--focusing on the role of nerve, oral mucosa, and supporting tissues.

The purpose of the present investigation was to consider possible aetiological aspects of mandibular tooth agenesis by comparing the pattern of mandibular molar and premolar agenesis with radiological evidence of the mandibular canal. Orthopantomograms from 33 children affected by agenesis of at least four premolar and/or molar teeth in the mandible were investigated. Three children were affected by ectodermal dysplasia. Two anthropological mandibles with absence of mandibular canals were included in the study for comparison. According to the investigation, agenesis should be divided into thre

[Ultrastructural studies on the pterygium. II. Connective tissue, vessels and nerves of the conjunctival part (author's transl)].

The stromal part of the pterygium is remarkably rich in plasma cells. The connective intercellular substance shows two different pathological modifications: A clotting together of collagen fibres to broad, osmiophilic, elastoid bands and a widening of the spaces containing the granular nonfibrillar ground-substance . The vascular system consists mostly of fenestrated sinusoid capillaries. Their endothelial cells frequently show degenerative changes and the basement membrane of the vessels can be as thick as up to 50--100 fold the normal size. For the first time nervous formations could be foun

Nerve Growth Factor: A Multifaceted Regulator of Pain, Inflammation, and Tissue Remodeling in Bone and Joint Disorders.

As an essential member of the neurotrophic factor family, nerve growth factor (NGF) plays multifaceted regulatory roles in the pathological processes of bone and joint diseases through its dual signaling mechanisms involving high-affinity receptor TrkA and low-affinity receptor p75NTR. This review systematically examines the profound impact of NGF on bone and joint diseases in multiple aspects, such as bone remodeling, pain perception, and angiogenesis. First, NGF promotes mechanical stress-induced bone formation through the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and regulates osteogenic differentiat

Connector-Assisted Repair of Transected Inferior Alveolar and Lingual Nerves Using Photochemical Tissue Bonding.

BACKGROUND: Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) and lingual nerve (LN) injury are recognized complications of oral and maxillofacial trauma or surgical procedures, often requiring subsequent microsurgical repair. This study explores the potential of photochemical tissue bonding (PTB), a light-activated technique that forms molecular crosslinks between collagen molecules, to seal a commercial nerve connector in place for IAN and LN nerve repair. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to measure and compare the repair strength of conventional suture and PTB repair in a nerve transection model. STUDY

Development of a bioactive, piezoelectric PVDF-TrFE scaffold with evaluation of tissue reaction for potential in nerve repair.

Current biomaterials for trauma-associated tissue repair often fail to recapitulate the complex signaling environment required for effective integration and regeneration, particularly in modulating immune responses post-implantation. To address these limitations, we developed a multi-cue electrospun scaffold incorporating physiologically relevant chemical, electrical, and physical signals. Using blend electrospinning, we functionalized poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) with cell-secreted, decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) to enhance cellular responses and limit f

Is nerve-directed stretching effective for improving of ankle joint flexibility and tissue stiffness in older men?

Age-related decrease in joint flexibility leads to difficulties in activities of daily living and an increased risk of falls. The current study investigated whether nerve-directed stretching, which focuses on stretching neural tissue, could acutely improve joint flexibility and tissue stiffness more than muscle-directed stretching or not. Twenty-seven older men performed muscle- and nerve-directed stretching for 400 ‍s (40 s × 10 times) on separate days. Before and after stretching, maximum ankle dorsiflexion angle was measured as range of motion (ROM). Shear wave propagation velocity (SWV) wa

Sensory and Sympathetic Nerve Localization in Mouse Temporomandibular Joint and Knee Joint Neuro-Musculoskeletal Tissues.

OBJECTIVE: Sympathetic-sensory coupling is increasingly implicated in joint homeostasis and disease. Towards the long-term goal of deciphering its role in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), we characterised the spatial relationships of sympathetic and sensory nerves and their receptors in the mouse temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and trigeminal ganglion (TG), using the knee joint for comparison. MATERIALS AND METHODS: RNAscope was used for localisation of sympathetic nerve markers tyrosine hydroxylase (Th) and adrenergic receptor alpha 2a (Adrα2a); and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (Bdnf)

Impact of Tissue Sealing Sheet on Erectile Dysfunction in a Rat Model of Nerve-Sparing Radical Prostatectomy.

INTRODUCTION: The tissue sealing sheet has recently been used to prevent intraoperative bleeding from the neurovascular bundles in radical prostatectomy. Surgical stress or inflammatory changes likely play a role in erectile dysfunction after cavernous nerve injury. However, the efficacy of a tissue sealing sheet for preventing erectile function after nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy remains unclear. AIM: To evaluate the effect of a tissue sealing sheet on erectile dysfunction after cavernous nerve dissection. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups and s

Detrimental influences of intraluminally-administered sclerotic agents on surrounding tissues and peripheral nerves: an experimental study.

The minimally-invasive nature of sclerotherapy makes it one of the first treatment options for venous malformations, although treatment-related complications, such as peripheral nerve paralysis, have been reported in some clinical cases. However, no studies of the aetiology of the detrimental effects of intraluminally-administered sclerotic agents on the surrounding tissues, including the peripheral nerves, have yet been published. This study therefore investigated the influences of intraluminally-administered sclerotic agents on the tissues surrounding the injection site using a newly-develop
