Seventeen tumors of the sympathetic nervous system were discovered in offspring of rats exposed in utero at a single dose of 80mg/kg of N-nitrosoethylurea at the day 16-19 of pregnancy, and then to constant light regimen. These tumors were classified as follows: benign--ganglioneuroma (six cases) and malignant--ganglioneuroblastoma (four cases) and neuroblastoma (seven cases). The most frequent location was in the sympathetic trunk in the mediastinum and in the retroperitoneal space. Morphological features of these induced tumors represent a model for similar neoplasms in humans in childrens'

Analysis of 89 intracranial tumors in children presenting at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, between 1960 and 1982 is reported. These tumors are commonest in the first decade of life and occur more in males than in females. Fifty-three per cent of the primary brain tumors are supratentorial. The commonest sites are cerebellum, cerebrum, and the pons. The common histological types are astrocytomas, medulloblastomas, ependymomas, and oligodendrogliomas. Craniopharyngiomas are among the most frequent supratentorial neoplasms in Ibadan children and the central nervous system invo

Neoplasms of the peripheral nerve sheath represent essential clinical manifestations of the syndromes known as the neurofibromatoses. Although involvement of multiple organ systems, including skin, central nervous system, and skeleton, may also be conspicuous, peripheral nerve neoplasia is often the most important and frequent cause of morbidity in these patients. Clinical characteristics of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) have been extensively described and studied during the last century, and the identification of mutations in the NF1 and NF2 genes by contem

Central nervous system (CNS) tumors, though relatively uncommon in the general population, frequently cause significant morbidity and mortality in those affected. Although high-grade neoplasms specifically may prove rapidly fatal, the rarity of these neoplasms-as well as their nonspecific symptomatology-renders them easily mistaken for both more common and innocuous etiologies. We report a case of a 38-year-old female with no significant medical history who sought care after 1 week of blurred vision and pressure-like headache worsened by leaning forward. Following antibiotic and oral steroid t

Delays and risks associated with neurosurgical biopsies preclude timely diagnosis and treatment of central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma and other CNS neoplasms. We prospectively integrated targeted rapid genotyping of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) into the evaluation of 70 patients with CNS lesions of unknown cause. Participants underwent genotyping of CSF-derived DNA using a quantitative polymerase chain reaction-based approach for parallel detection of single-nucleotide variants in the MYD88, TERT promoter, IDH1, IDH2, BRAF, and H3F3A genes within 80 minutes of sample acquisition. Primary melanocytic neoplasms of the central nervous system(CNS)presumably arise from leptomeningeal melanocytes that are derived from the neural crest. Melanocytic neoplasms associated with neurocutaneous melanosis likely derive from melanocyte precursor cells that reach the CNS after somatic mutations, mostly, of the NRAS. They should be distinguished from other melanotic tumors involving the CNS, including metastatic melanoma and other primary tumors that undergo melanization, such as melanocytic schwannomas, medulloblastomas, paragangliomas, and various gliomas, because these lesions requi

In Part I of this article, we present our data collected over the past 8 years on the clinical evaluations of pediatric brain tumors with an emphasis placed on the more common neoplasms. Our data consists of 385 children ranging in age from newborn to 18 years. The majority of children presented with signs of raised intracranial pressure (including nausea, vomiting, and headaches), seizures or other focal neurologic deficits. Five percent of our children presented to outlying hospitals with symptoms that retrospectively turned out to be due to brain neoplasms but were misdiagnosed as "gastroen

BACKGROUND: The identification of the central lymphatic system represents a significant advancement in contemporary neuroscientific research. As a vital conduit connecting the central nervous system to the peripheral lymphatic network, the primary components of the central lymphatic system, the glymphatic system and meningeal lymphatic vessels, maintain homeostasis within the central microenvironment through cerebrospinal fluid circulation, metabolic waste clearance, and immune cell trafficking. Recent studies affirm that structural and functional perturbations within the central lymphatic app

Ameloblastoma is an aggressive locally recurring neoplasm of odontogenic epithelium. We describe a case of a mandibular ameloblastoma with a 17-year history of local recurrences followed by two metachronous intracranial metastases. Central nervous system metastasis without pulmonary involvement is previously unreported in a living patient with ameloblastoma. The behavior of this tumor qualifies it as a malignant ameloblastoma.

Pediatric high-grade gliomas represent a heterogeneous group of tumors that accounts for 15%-20% of all pediatric central nervous system tumors. These neoplasms predominantly involve the supratentorial hemispheres or the pons, in which case the tumors are usually called diffuse brainstem gliomas. The diagnosis of supratentorial neoplasms is dependent on their histologic appearance. The maximum possible surgical resection is always attempted since the degree of surgical resection is the main prognostic factor for these patients. Older children (>3 years) with supratentorial neoplasms undergo a

The authors present a case of relatively rare tumor of the central nervous system (CNS) in a 19-year-old female, who died 18 months after the first manifestation of meningismus, increased intracranial pressure and secondary hydrocephalus. Brain autopsy revealed abundant neoplastic infiltrations, which spread through the subarachnoid space. Neoplastic infiltrations were also present in the third ventricle and in a form of small subependymal nodules along the whole ventricular system. The microscopical examination showed that neoplasm consisted of small cells, which formed neuroblastic Homer Wri

Meningeal melanocytoma of the central nervous system is a rare primary melanocytic neoplasm arising from the leptomeninges' melanocytes. It chiefly occurs in the posterior cranial fossa and rarely involves the spinal cord. The literature is bereft of lumbar spinal involvement by meningeal melanocytomas. Herein, we present a 17-year-old male patient who was incidentally diagnosed with a lumbar spinal meningeal melanocytoma during an imaging workup for backache following a fall. It was an extramedullary intradural tumor and was amenable to complete surgical removal in the spinal region. This cas

BACKGROUND: Collision tumors involving the co-occurrence of two morphologically and genomically distinct neoplasms in the same anatomical site are exceptionally rare in the central nervous system (CNS).
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a unique case of a CNS collision tumor comprising chronic lymphocytic leukemia and myxopapillary ependymoma in a 77-year-old male with acute neurological decline. Presumed to represent leukemic infiltration, urgent laminectomy was pursued for tissue diagnosis and spinal cord decompression, revealing the unexpected ependymal component.
CONCLUSION: This case highligh

Two anorectic, emaciated infants with central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms are reported. Diagnosis in each case was delayed, because computed tomography of the head was initially falsely negative, and because primary gastroenterologic illness was suggested by the presence of mild inflammation and villous atrophy of the small intestine. This experience indicates that the diagnosis of CNS neoplasm must be aggressively pursued in cachectic infants who refuse to eat, regardless of the results of the initial radiologic studies. Mild histologic abnormalities of the small intestine that may be pres

Acoustic neurilemmomas are more frequent, larger, and more vascular in women, and such lesions have a rapidly progressive clinical course in pregnant women; these findings suggest that the growth of these neoplasms may bear a relationship to certain hormone levels. Tissues from 8 patients with acoustic neurilemmoma (3 men and 5 women) were studied by a new fluorescent steroid histochemical technique to detect the presence of estrogen receptors in or on neoplastic cells. Estrogen receptor protein has also been found in meningioma cells in women. Neurilemmoma of the acoustic nerve is the second

Neoplasms of the peripheral nervous system represent a heterogenous group with a wide spectrum of morphological features and biological potential. They range from benign and curable by complete excision (schwannoma and soft tissue perineurioma) to benign but potentially aggressive at the local level (plexiform neurofibroma) to the highly malignant (malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors [MPNST]). In this review, we discuss the diagnostic and pathologic features of common peripheral nerve sheath tumors, particularly those that may be encountered in the intracranial compartment or in the spine

Advances in neuroimaging and cryosurgical techniques have prompted us to re-evaluate the potential of cryosurgical techniques for the removal and the destruction of various neoplasms. We have used cryosurgical instrumentation to remove tumours in the brain, spine and orbit in 71 patients without complications. Cryosurgery was used to facilitate removal and extraction in 64 and to destroy residual neoplasms when removal was incomplete in 7. Intraoperative real time ultrasonic imaging permitted precise delimitation of tumours from surrounding tissues and allowed monitoring during the production

Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) is an uncommon, autosomal dominant disorder in which patients are predisposed to neoplastic and dysplastic lesions of Schwann cells (schwannomas and schwannosis), meningeal cells (meningiomas and meningioangiomatosis) and glial cells (gliomas and glial hamartomas). Clinical and genetic criteria that distinguish NF2 from neurofibromatosis 1 have allowed more accurate assignment of specific pathological features to NF2. The NF2 tumor suppressor gene on chromosome 22q12 encodes a widely expressed protein, named merlin, which may link the cytoskeleton and cell membrane. G

Twenty seven B cell neoplasms were examined by high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) and immune thin layer chromatography (ITLC) to determine ganglioside expression. Patterns of expression in the cells were compared with conventional morphology, genotype, and glycoprotein immunophenotype. Patterns of ganglioside expression were found for each of the tumor types analyzed (5 acute lymphoblastic lymphomas (ALL), 5 Burkitt's Lymphomas (BL), 4 chronic lymphocytic leukemias (CLL), and 3 diffuse poorly differentiated lymphomas (DPDL), 7 diffuse histiocytic lymphomas (DHL), and 3 multiple

BACKGROUND: Primary central nervous system non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL-CNS) is an enigmatic disease of uncertain origin. At the Massachusetts General Hospital, 104 patients with NHL-CNS were seen from 1958 through 1989. An impression of changes in the frequency of diagnosis, character of the tumors, and therapy for this disease prompted this study of the pathologic features, clinical data, and natural history of this tumor in these 104 patients.
METHODS: Histologic slides (neurosurgical specimens and autopsy tissues) were available for 99 patients. The tumors were classified by the Working Fo
