In normal embryos, mRNA encoding platelet-derived growth factor A (PDGF A) and the platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFR alpha) are found within and adjacent to the site of vertebral development, the sclerotome. These patterns of expression are consistent with PDGF action on the developing sclerotome and dermis. Homozygous Patch (Ph) mutant mouse embryos lack the receptor gene (Pdgfra) due to an extensive deletion at that locus. Consistent with the spatial pattern of Pdgfra expression, striking deformities are found in the spine and ribcage of Ph/Ph embryos. In particular, we sh

Classic oncological models have largely restricted cancer pathogenesis to autonomous genetic mutations within localized cells. Current research, however, reframes solid tumors as structurally integrated "pseudo-organs" that rely on host neural networks for survival. This review examines the reciprocal signaling networks connecting nervous, immune, and malignant cells within the tumor microenvironment. At the tissue level, we outline how tumors construct de novo neural architecture via axonogenesis, cellular plasticity, and the assembly of functional neuro-neoplastic synapses. Expanding beyond

OBJECTIVE: Identifying patients at high risk of mortality is crucial for emergency physicians to allocate hospital resources effectively, particularly in regions with limited medical services. This need becomes even more pressing during global health crises that lead to significant morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of deep neural decision forests and deep neural decision trees in predicting mortality among COVID-19 patients. To achieve this, we utilized patient data encompassing COVID-19 diagnosis, demographics, health indicators, and occupational risk fac

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with disruptions in social behavior and the neural circuitry behind it. Very little data is available on the mechanisms that are responsible for the lack of motivation to reunite with conspecifics during isolation. It is as important to investigate the neural changes that reduce motivation to end social isolation, as those underlying the reactions to social stimuli. Using a rodent model of prenatal valproic acid (VPA) exposure, we investigated how social isolation affects the neural activation of key brain nuclei involved in social processing and st

Microneurography data provides valuable insights into peripheral nerve responses critical for understanding sensory functions. This paper presents a unique approach by utilizing a neural network solution to detect spike events in microneurography data, employing the weighted Hermite Variable Projection Neural Network model to capture distinct neurophysiological patterns. Addressing the inherent challenges of low signal-to-noise ratios and extreme class imbalance, the proposed pipeline integrates a knowledge-augmented model, data balancing techniques and explainable AI methods to ensure both ac

Previous research has shown that transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) promotes declarative fear extinction, but its neural mechanisms in this process are still unclear. This study aimed to explore tVNS's impacts on physiological (skin conductance response [SCR]) and neural (event-related potentials, ERP) fear-related responses. Forty healthy participants were randomly assigned to the tVNS or Sham group. During a fear-conditioned memory paradigm, electroencephalograph (EEG) and SCR were measured. We analyzed SCR amplitude, ERP components, EEG signal spectral analysis, and the

Neural stem cell therapy has been galvanized by the discovery of pluripotent stem cells. The possibility to generate specialized central nervous system-specific differentiated cells using human somatic cells engineered to become induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) was a game changer. This technology has broad applications in the field of regenerative medicine, in vitro disease modeling, targeted drug discovery, and precision medicine. Currently, iPSCs are one of the most promising cell sources amenable for commercialization and off-the-shelf neural stem cell therapy products. iPSCs exhibit

Mid-adolescence is a critical time for the development of stress-related disorders and it is associated with significant social vulnerability. However, little is known about normative neural processes accompanying psychosocial stress at this time. Previous research found that emotion regulation strategies critically influence the relationship between stress and the development of psychiatric symptoms during adolescence. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we examined neural responses to acute stress and analyzed whether the tendency to use adaptive or maladaptive emotion regula

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have shown considerable promise as an adaptable cell source for use in tissue engineering and other therapeutic applications. The aims of this study were to develop methods to test the hypothesis that human MSCs could be differentiated using sound wave stimulation alone and to find the underlying mechanism. Human bone marrow (hBM)-MSCs were stimulated with sound waves (1 kHz, 81 dB) for 7 days and the expression of neural markers were analyzed. Sound waves induced neural differentiation of hBM-MSC at 1 kHz and 81 dB but not at 1 kHz and 100 dB. To determine the si

Multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network belongs to multi-layer feedforward neural network, and has the ability and characteristics of high intelligence. It can realize the complex nonlinear mapping by its own learning through the network. Bipolar disorder is a serious mental illness with high recurrence rate, high self-harm rate and high suicide rate. Most of the onset of the bipolar disorder starts with depressive episode, which can be easily misdiagnosed as unipolar depression and lead to a delayed treatment so as to influence the prognosis. The early identifica- tion of bipolar disorder

BACKGROUND: Neural invasion is known to be one of the aggressive characteristics of pancreatic adenocarcinoma. However, there have been no systematic studies on intraoperative examination of neural invasion of pancreatic carcinomas after wide dissection of the retroperitoneum, particularly at the surgical margin.
METHODS: We performed intraoperative immunostaining on the frozen sections of several excised plexus specimens, using peroxidase-labeled anti-cytokeratin 19 antibody in 17 cases of resectable pancreatic carcinoma. Postoperatively, we also tried to detect occult micrometastasis by dir

Investigating brain area functions requires advanced technologies, but meaningful insights depend on correlating neural signals with behavior. Traditional mice behavior annotation methods, including manual and semi-automated approaches, are limited by subjectivity and time constraints. To overcome these limitations, our study employs the YOLO neural network for precise mice tracking and composite RGB frames for behavioral scoring. Our model, trained on over 10,000 frames, accurately classifies sitting, running, and grooming behaviors. Additionally, we provide statistical metrics and data visua

Our continuous visual experience in daily life is dominated by change. Previous research has focused on visual change due to stimulus motion, eye movements or unfolding events, but not their combined impact across the brain, or their interactions with semantic novelty. We investigate the neural responses to these sources of novelty during film viewing. We analyzed intracranial recordings in humans across 6328 electrodes from 23 individuals. Responses associated with saccades and film cuts were dominant across the entire brain. Film cuts at semantic event boundaries were particularly effective

Using the model of lysolecithin-induced demyelination of the corpus callosum in wild-type, NCAM-deficient, and endoneuraminidase-injected mice, we have analyzed the consequences of the loss of expression of NCAM or PSA residues on the migration and proliferation capacities of neural precursors of the subventricular zone (SVZ). We showed that the absence of PSA or NCAM delayed migration of neural precursors to the olfactory bulb and consequently enhanced their recruitment at the lesion site. Moreover, after demyelination, the lack of NCAM but not PSA promoted proliferation in the SVZ and the le

Hepatitis B transmission is influenced by environmental variability, immune response and vaccination, making its spread inherently stochastic, while the integration of stochastic modeling with machine learning is particularly important for representing disease uncertainty in varied surroundings. We present a hybrid innovative framework that combines a stochastic epidemiological model with a feed-forward neural network to study hepatitis B virus (HBV) dynamics. We show the well-posedness by establishing the existence of solutions with uniqueness, and analyze extinction and persistence of the di

The analysis of biomedical signals for clinical studies and therapeutic applications can benefit from embedded devices that can process these signals locally and in real-time. An example is the analysis of intracranial EEG (iEEG) from epilepsy patients for the detection of High Frequency Oscillations (HFO), which are a biomarker for epileptogenic brain tissue. Mixed-signal neuromorphic circuits offer the possibility of building compact and low-power neural network processing systems that can analyze data on-line in real-time. Here we present a neuromorphic system that combines a neural recordi

In this study, multilayer perception neural network (MLPNN) was employed to predict thermal conductivity of PVP electrospun nanocomposite fibers with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and Nickel Zinc ferrites [(Ni0.6Zn0.4) Fe2O4]. This is the second attempt on the application of MLPNN with prey predator algorithm for the prediction of thermal conductivity of PVP electrospun nanocomposite fibers. The prey predator algorithm was used to train the neural networks to find the best models. The best models have the minimal of sum squared error between the experimental testing data and the corres

The expression of Basigin gene products and monocarboxylate transporter-1 (MCT1) has been investigated within the mammalian neural retina and suggests a role for these proteins in cellular metabolism within that tissue. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the expression of these same proteins in the pineal gland of the mouse brain. Mouse pineal gland and neural retina RNA and protein were subjected to quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and immunoblotting analyses. In addition, paraffin-embedded sections of each tissue were analyzed for expression of Ba

Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) are pluripotent with a strong self-renewable ability making them a virtually unlimited source of neural cells for structural repair in neurological disorders. Currently, hESCs are one of the most promising cell sources amenable for commercialization of off-shelf cell therapy products. However, along with this strong proliferative capacity of hESCs comes the tumorigenic potential of these cells after transplantation. Thus, the isolation and purification of a homogeneous, population of neural stem cells (hNSCs) are of paramount importance to avoid tumor formati
