Prosthetic hands help upper limb amputees and people who were born without hands. Currently, these prostheses are rather rudimentary and do not provide adequate sensing capabilities compared to a human hand. People use their natural hands to perceive complex tactile phenomena such as shear and torsion using thousands of mechanoreceptors in their fingertips. The capability to detect torsional loads at the fingertips is a notable gap in prosthetic hand sensation. Flexible tactile sensors are a promising new technology that would be ideal for prosthetic hands since they allow for stretching and m

Metal-on-metal (MoM) hip implants made of cobalt chromium (CoCr) alloy have shown early failure compared with other bearing materials. A consequence of the abnormal wear produced by these prostheses is elevated levels of cobalt in the blood of patients, which can lead to systemic conditions involving cardiac and neurological symptoms. In order to better understand the implications for patients with these implants, we carried out metal content and RNA-Seq analysis of excised tissue from rats treated intraperitonially for 28 days with low concentrations of cobalt. Cobalt blood levels in dosed ra

Retinal prostheses aim to restore vision in individuals affected by degenerative conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa. Traditional approaches, including implantable electrode arrays and optogenetics, often require invasive surgery or genetic modification and face limitations in spatial resolution and visual field size. While emerging nanoparticle-based methods offer minimally invasive solutions, some of them rely on intense visible light, which may interfere with residual vision. Plasmonic gold nanorods (AuNRs), tuned to absorb near-infrared (NIR) light

Recent developments in dexterous myoelectric prosthetics have established a hardware base for human-machine interfaces. Although pattern recognition techniques have seen successful deployment in gesture classification, their applications remain largely confined to certain specific discrete gestures. Addressing complex daily tasks demands an immediate need for precise simultaneous and proportional control (SPC) for multiple degrees of freedom (DoFs) movements. In this paper, we introduce an SPC approach for multi-DoF wrist movements using the cumulative spike trains (CSTs) of motor unit pools,

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the effect of an active transcutaneous bone conduction implant (BoneBridgeⓇ) in the management of tinnitus in patients with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss.
METHODS: From October 2016 to July 2018, 15 patients with unilateral tinnitus accompanied by ipsilateral sensorineural hearing loss received BoneBridgeⓇ implants. Pure-tone average, tinnitus handicap inventory (THI), and a visual analogue scale (VAS) for awareness, loudness, and annoyance were measured before and 6 months after surgery. We defined improvement as a reduction of more than 20% betwee

With the advancement of electrode and equipment technology, neuroprosthetics have become a promising alternative to partially compensate for the loss of sensorimotor function in amputees and patients with neurological diseases. Cortical neural interfaces are suitable especially for spinal cord injuries and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Although considerable success has been achieved in the literature by spike decoding of motor signals from the human brain, somatosensory feedback is essential for better motor control, interaction with objects, and the embodiment of prosthetic devices. In this

The ability to negotiate stairs is important for community access and independent mobility but requires more effort and strength than level walking. For this reason, previous attempts to utilize functional neuromuscular stimulation (FNS) to restore stair navigation after spinal cord injury (SCI) have had limited success and are not readily generalizable. Stair descent is particularly challenging because it requires energy absorption via eccentric muscle contractions, a task not easily accomplished with FNS. This article presents the design and initial testing of a hybrid neuroprosthesis with a

BACKGROUND: Pathological tremor is the most prevalent movement disorder. Current treatments do not attain a significant tremor reduction in a large proportion of patients, which makes tremor a major cause of loss of quality of life. For instance, according to some estimates, 65% of those suffering from upper limb tremor report serious difficulties during daily living. Therefore, novel forms for tremor management are required. Since muscles intrinsically behave as a low pass filter, and tremor frequency is above that of volitional movements, the authors envisioned the exploitation of these prop

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to develop control strategies to produce alternating, weight-bearing stepping in a cat model of hemisection spinal cord injury (SCI) using intraspinal microstimulation (ISMS).
APPROACH: Six cats were anesthetized and the functional consequences of a hemisection SCI were simulated by manually moving one hind-limb through the gait cycle over a moving treadmill belt. ISMS activated the muscles in the other leg by stimulating motor networks in the lumbosacral enlargement using low levels of current (<110 µA). The control strategy used signals from ground reac

Processing myoelectrical activity in the forearm has for long been considered a promising framework to allow transradial amputees to control motorized prostheses. In spite of expectations, contemporary muscle-computer interfaces built for this purpose typically fail to satisfy one or more important desiderata, such as accuracy, robustness, and/or naturalness of control, in part due to difficulties in acquiring high-quality signals continuously outside laboratory conditions. In light of such problems, surgically implanted electrodes have been made a viable option that allows for long-term acqui

OBJECTIVE: The performance of neuroprostheses, including cochlear and retinal implants, is currently constrained by the spatial resolution of electrical stimulation. Optogenetics has improved the spatial control of neurons in vivo but lacks the fast-temporal dynamics required for auditory and retinal signalling. The objective of this study is to demonstrate that combining optical and electrical stimulation in vitro could address some of the limitations associated with each of the stimulus modes when used independently.
APPROACH: The response of murine auditory neurons expressing ChR2-H134 to

Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is an antioxidant that also stimulates nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis and secretion. In an earlier pilot study in our laboratory, Schwann cell growth was accelerated, and NGF mRNA expression and NGF secretion were promoted. The present study was designed to explore the possible nerve-inducing effect of PQQ on a nerve tube model over a 1-cm segmental deficit. An 8-mm sciatic nerve deficit was created in a rat model and bridged by a 1-cm silicone tube. Then,10 mul of 0.03 mmol/l PQQ were perfused into the silicone chamber in the PQQ group. Advancements in human-machine interfaces (HMIs) are pivotal for enhancing rehabilitation technologies and improving the quality of life for individuals with limb loss. This paper presents a novel CNN-Transformer model for decoding continuous fine finger motions from surface electromyography (sEMG) signals by integrating the convolutional neural network (CNN) and Transformer architecture, focusing on applications for transradial amputees. This model leverages the strengths of both convolutional and Transformer architectures to effectively capture both local muscle activation patterns and global

OBJECTIVE: Persons with normal arm function can perform complex wrist and hand movements over a wide range of limb positions. However, for those with transradial amputation who use myoelectric prostheses, control across multiple limb positions can be challenging, frustrating, and can increase the likelihood of device abandonment. In response, the goal of this research was to investigate convolutional neural network (RCNN)-based position-aware myoelectric prosthesis control strategies.
METHODS: Surface electromyographic (EMG) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) signals, obtained from 16 non-di

BACKGROUND: Action observation training has been suggested to facilitate motor improvements in the lives of persons with neural injury. Previous studies have shown that for persons with upper limb amputation, matched limb training, where prosthesis users emulate each other, has shown promise above mismatched training where a prosthesis user emulates actions of a person with sound limbs (most commonly that of a therapist).
OBJECTIVE: The mechanism underlying the matched limb training benefit is unclear. Gaze strategies may reveal unique patterns between matched and mismatched training which co

BACKGROUND: Implanted motor system neuroprostheses can be effective at increasing personal mobility of persons paralyzed by spinal cord injuries. However, currently available neural stimulation systems for standing employ patterns of constant activation and are unreactive to changing postural demands.
METHODS: In this work, we developed a closed-loop controller for detecting forward-directed body disturbances and initiating a stabilizing step in a person with spinal cord injury. Forward-directed pulls at the waist were detected with three body-mounted triaxial accelerometers. A finite state m

A tissue-engineered nerve with tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) was repaired for sciatic nerve defects in rats. A total of 55 adult Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were classified into 4 groups, with 15 rats in each of groups A, B, and C as well as 10 rats in group D. About 1.5cm of a sciatic nerve of the right hind limb located 0.5cm below the inferior margin of the piriformis was resected to form the defects. Four types of nerve grafts used for bridging nerve defects in the SD rats corresponded to the 4 groups: tissue-engineered nerves with TMP in group A, tissue-engineered nerves without TMP in group B,

Loss of hand use is considered by many spinal cord injury survivors to be the most devastating consequence of their injury. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) of forearm and hand muscles has been used to provide basic, voluntary hand grasp to hundreds of human patients. Current approaches typically grade pre-programmed patterns of muscle activation using simple control signals, such as those derived from residual movement or muscle activity. However, the use of such fixed stimulation patterns limits hand function to the few tasks programmed into the controller. In contrast, we are develop

The hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasias (HED) belong to a large and heterogeneous nosological group of polymalfomative syndromes characterized by dystrophy or agenesis of ectodermal derivatives. Molecular etiologies of HED consist of mutations of the genes involved in the Ectodysplasin (EDA)-NF-kappaB pathway. Besides the classic ectodermal signs, craniofacial and bone manifestations are associated with the phenotypic spectrum of HED. The dental phenotype of HED consists of various degrees of oligodontia with other dental abnormalities, and these are important in the early diagnosis and identif
