Improvements in clinical and functional vision and quality of life after second eye cataract surgery.

PURPOSE: To determine whether there is a need for second eye cataract surgery or whether cataract surgery in one eye provides sufficiently adequate vision. METHODS: The vision of 43 patients was assessed using a battery of clinical vision tests, performance-based functional vision tests, and quality of life questionnaires, both before and a few months after cataract surgery. Twenty-five patients underwent second eye surgery and 18 patients underwent first-eye surgery. To determine whether cataract surgery returned vision to normal levels, a control group of 25 subjects of a similar age with n

[Binocular function and patient satisfaction after monovision induced by laser in situ keratomileusis (lasik)].

INTRODUCTION: Presbyopia is a problem in refraction attributed to loss of near vision. Monovision (MV) is a strategy to compensate for presbyopia whereby one eye is corrected for distance and the other eye corrected for near vision. The patient should be able to suppress the blurred image from one eye and see clearly at all distances without glasses. PURPOSE: To measure binocular function and patient satisfaction with MV induced by laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in myopic and hyperopic presbyopic patients. METHODS: Patients 39 years or older who underwent MV LASIK and minimum 90 days f

Deferoxamine (Desferal)-induced toxic retinal pigmentary degeneration and presumed optic neuropathy.

Eight patients (16 eyes) developed ocular toxicity while undergoing intravenous deferoxamine mesylate (Desferal) chelation therapy for transfusional hemosiderosis. Presenting symptoms included decreased visual acuity, color vision abnormalities, and night blindness. Six patients presented as presumed retrobulbar optic neuropathy demonstrating central scotomas and color vision abnormalities. The remaining two patients presented with pigmentary changes confined either to the macula or equator. Following cessation of therapy, vision improved in all but four eyes, which did not attain their pretre

Retinal degeneration in mice expressing the constitutively active G90D rhodopsin mutant.

Rhodopsin is the G protein-coupled receptor in rod photoreceptor cells that initiates vision upon photon capture. The light receptor is normally locked in an inactive state in the dark by the covalently bound inverse agonist 11-cis retinal. Mutations can render the receptor active even in the absence of light. This constitutive activity can desensitize rod photoreceptor cells and lead to night blindness. A G90D mutation in rhodopsin causes the receptor to be constitutively active and leads to congenital stationary night blindness, which is generally thought to be devoid of retinal degeneration

An atypical presentation of cystic fibrosis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: The presentation of cystic fibrosis is dependant upon which organs are affected. Common presentations include chronic respiratory infections and malabsorption. Patients with atypical disease tend to present late in childhood or as adults. Eye manifestations of cystic fibrosis are less well known. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old Caucasian boy presented with tiredness and difficulty seeing at night, over a period of 6 months. Good vision was only described in bright conditions. There was no history of jaundice, steatorrhea or diarrhoea. CONCLUSION: This is the first reported cas

A Glimpse Into Rarity: A Phenomenal Case of Autoimmune Retinopathy in a Young Woman.

Autoimmune retinopathy (AIR) is a rare retinal disorder that causes a gradual loss of vision due to autoantibodies targeting retinal antigens, leading to photoreceptor degeneration. Early diagnosis and timely intervention are critical for preserving visual function in affected patients. Over the course of a year, a 30-year-old woman had bilateral, abrupt, painless, progressive diminution of vision, nyctalopia, photopsia, and a restricted peripheral field of vision. No family history of night blindness was found. A diagnosis of AIR was suggested by the clinical examination, fundus fluorescein a

Effect of acute intraocular pressure challenge on rat retinal and cortical function.

PURPOSE: The global or gross response index of visual performance measured from the eye does not necessarily translate to global responses measured from the brain. A better understanding of this relationship would facilitate the monitoring of disease models that affect the visual pathway. We consider whether rod- and cone-retino-cortical-pathways are equally affected by acute IOP elevation. METHODS: Acute, stepwise IOP elevation (10, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 mm Hg) was induced in anesthetized dark- (N = 8) and light-adapted pigmented rats (N = 6). Electroretinogram (ERG) and visual evoked potential

The impact of uncorrected astigmatism on night driving performance.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of uncorrected astigmatism on night driving performance on a closed-road circuit. METHODS: Participants included 10 drivers (mean age 24.4 ± 7.0 years), with low to moderate bilateral astigmatism (0.75-1.50 DC), who were regular contact lens (CL) wearers. Vision and night driving performance were assessed in a cross-over design with a toric CL and a best-sphere spherical CL. Binocular visual function measures included photopic and mesopic visual acuity (VA), contrast sensitivity (CS), mesopic motion sensitivity and glare tests (Mesotest® II and Halometer). N

Acute bilateral blindness as a presenting symptom of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

NHL usually presents with lymphadenopathy or symptoms related to compression by the primary tumor of surrounding structures. While the head and neck region is a common site of involvement, blindness is rarely a presenting symptom. We report here the case of a child who presented to the emergency room with acute bilateral loss of vision and no other symptoms. Cranial imaging studies revealed a solid mass of the skull base with compression on optic nerves. Diagnosis of Burkitt's lymphoma was confirmed after biopsy. The patient had partial vision improvement two days after optic nerve decompressi

Comparison of the Goldmann-Weekers dark adaptometer and LKC Technologies Scotopic Sensitivity tester-1.

The standard for dark adaptation has long been the Goldmann-Weekers Dark Adaptometer(Haag-Streit). More recently, portable, relatively inexpensive LED-based dark adaptometers have become commercially available. These devices have potential use in areas with limited resources to screen for night-blindness, commonly caused worldwide by vitamin A deficiency. In order to determine the sensitivity to detecting changes in night vision, this study compared one such device, LKC Technologies Scotopic Sensitivity Tester-1 (SST-1) to the Goldmann-Weekers in patients with hereditary retinal degeneration a

[Status of rendering an expert opinion following the changes in the German traffic legislation].

The new traffic legislation in Germany ("FeVAndV") solves at least the most urgent problems for the ophthalmological driver's license assessment which were present in the old, preceding regulations ("FeV"). Many suggestions of the traffic committee of the German Ophthalmological Society ("DOG") were taken into consideration. As expected, the recommendations of the traffic committee concerning an obligatory test of mesopic vision were not adopted into the new legislation. We still have the unacceptable situation that on the one hand the European legislation demands an obligatory test of mesopic

Fundus Albipunctatus Associated with Biallelic LRAT Gene Mutation: A Case Report with Long-Term Follow-Up.

This case report presents a 26-year-old female patient diagnosed with fundus albipunctatus (FAP), a rare form of congenital stationary night blindness. The patient's clinical history and retinal findings spanning 23 years are consistent with FAP. The patient has profound night blindness, photophobia, and mild color vision changes with preserved best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). Small white dots are present throughout the fundus, sparing the central macula. Electroretinograms (ERG) are consistent with congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) and suggest a lack of rod response. Ophthalmic

Effects of varying illumination on ocular aberrations and aberration compensation before and after small incision Lenticule extraction: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There are few reports regarding the influence of varying illumination on the compensation effect before and after corneal refractive surgery. We aimed to evaluate the changes in refraction, higher-order aberrations, and aberration compensation between mesopic and photopic illumination before and after small incision lenticule extraction. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, only the right eyes of patients who underwent small incision lenticule extraction for the correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism at the Tianjin Eye Hospital were included. A Naturally Occurring Canine Model of Autosomal Recessive Congenital Stationary Night Blindness.

Congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) is a non-progressive, clinically and genetically heterogeneous disease of impaired night vision. We report a naturally-occurring, stationary, autosomal recessive phenotype in beagle dogs with normal daylight vision but absent night vision. Affected dogs had normal retinas on clinical examination, but showed no detectable rod responses. They had "negative-type" mixed rod and cone responses in full-field ERGs. Their photopic long-flash ERGs had normal OFF-responses associated with severely reduced ON-responses. The phenotype is similar to the Schubert

Surgical complications caused by inaccurate scotopic preoperative pupillary measurement in cataract and lasik surgery: case report and review of the literature.

Accurate scotopic preoperative pupillary measurements in both cataract and lasik surgery cases are critical to avoid in individuals with naturally briskly dilating pupils under scotopic conditions postoperative visual disability related to low light reflections, disabling illuminance, glare disability, halos, starbursts, and diplopia with night vision. Both edge reflections of the pseudophakos implant in cataract surgery and the ablated corneal margin in lasik surgery can contribute to serious visual disability in patients who have larger scotopic pupils exposing the edge of the implanted lens
