Water Quality Impacts of Legacy Ion-Adsorption Rare Earth Element Mining and Processing.

In situ leaching of ion-adsorption rare earth deposits (IAREDs) in southern China creates evolving, multi-contaminant legacies that differ markedly across the mining lifecycle. This study examines the spatiotemporal hydrogeochemical patterns in a representative watershed, spanning active mining areas, abandoned areas undergoing natural recovery, and downstream residential areas receiving lime-treated effluent. In active mining areas, the injection of MgSO4 lixiviant rapidly mobilizes rare earth elements (REEs) and potentially toxic elements (PTEs, e.g., Cd and Pb) mainly through cation exchang

Soil development constrains N availability through regulating N cycling in subtropical karst regions.

Soil development profoundly shapes the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils, yet its role in regulating nitrogen (N) cycling and shaping ecological succession remains underexplored. This gap is especially critical for large-scale ecological restoration, where similar climatic and geologic backgrounds can yield divergent outcomes. In this study, we investigated how varying degrees of soil development affect soil N availability and plant community succession after 60 years of natural recovery. Field surveys revealed that sites with moderately weathered soils transitioned to woo

Pilot-scale duckweed-CO2 wastewater bioremediation system: a synergistic approach for nutrient removal, carbon capture, and biomass production.

This study presents a pilot-scale duckweed-based wastewater treatment system enhanced with CO2 fertilization to improve nutrient removal, CO2 capture, and biomass productivity. Three strains of Landoltia punctata were cultivated continuously for five months. In spring, CO2 supplementation significantly increased the biomass yield and starch and protein productivity (by more than 12.2, 2.4 and 3.5 g/m2/d, respectively), representing increases of 189-259 %, 1,108-2,330 % and 143-166 %, respectively, compared with those of the control group. The removal rates of total nitrogen (TN) and total phos

A review: Biological technologies for nitrogen monoxide abatement.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx), including nitrogen monoxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), are among the most important global atmospheric pollutants because they have a negative impact on human respiratory health, animals, and the environment through the greenhouse effect and ozone layer destruction. NOx compounds are predominantly generated by anthropogenic activities, which involve combustion processes such as energy production, transportation, and industrial activities. The most widely used alternatives for NOx abatement on an industrial scale are selective catalytic and non-catalytic reductions;

Isolated heterotrophic nitrifying and aerobic denitrifying bacterium for treating actual refinery wastewater with low C/N ratio.

Heterotrophic nitrifying and aerobic denitrifying bacteria that have been widely isolated from complicated activated sludge microflorae demonstrate dominant advantages in simultaneous removal of ammonium and nitrogen oxides under aerobic conditions. However, owing to the need of organic carbon to support bacterial growth, nitrogen removal of actual industrial wastewater with low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio remains a challenge. Here, Pseudomonas mendocina Y7 was identified and presented to effectively remove nitrogen of actual refinery wastewater with low C/N ratio. The isolated bacterium sh

Impact of paint shop decanter effluents on biological treatability of automotive industry wastewater.

A lab-scale Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) was implemented to investigate biological treatability and kinetic characteristics of paint shop wastewater (PSW) together with main stream wastewater (MSW) of a bus production factory. Readily biodegradable and slowly biodegradable COD fractions of MWS were determined by respirometric analysis: 4.2% (SS), 10.4% (SH) and 59.3% (XS). Carbon and nitrogen removal performance of the SBR feeding with MSW alone were obtained as 89% and 58%, respectively. When PSW was introduced to MSW, both carbon and nitrogen removal were deteriorated. Model simulation ind

Distinct roles of granules and flocs in aerobic granular sludge processes.

Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) is an innovative and efficient biotechnology for wastewater treatment that has been successfully applied on full-scale worldwide. Full-scale municipal AGS systems typically contain both granular sludge (granules) and flocculent sludge (flocs). Studies on the different roles of granules and flocs remain limited. In this study, a laboratory-scale AGS reactor fed with complex synthetic wastewater was operated to simulate full-scale AGS systems and to study the different functional roles of granules and flocs. The laboratory reactor achieved a coexistence of granules

Diversity of dirammox microorganisms.

UNLABELLED: Our knowledge of the nitrogen cycle has been advanced by the discovery of anammox bacteria, ammonia-oxidizing archaea, and comammox bacteria, along with their high diversity. Direct ammonia oxidation (dirammox), a recently discovered heterotrophic nitrification pathway, converts ammonium and organic nitrogen directly to N2 through the DnfABC multienzyme system, further expanding our understanding of the nitrogen cycle. However, the taxonomic distribution, prevalence, and nitrogen metabolic potential of microorganisms encoding dirammox genes remain poorly understood. Here, large-sca

An evaluation of the N2O emission reduction potential of enhanced efficiency nitrogen fertilizers and application timing in a semi-arid cereal cropping system.

Efforts to cut fertilizer-related nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions require sustainable nitrogen (N) management that maintains crop productivity while reducing emissions. Technologies such as enhanced efficiency N fertilizers (EENFs) have potential to support best management practices by improving N use efficiency and lowering N2O emissions. This study (i) evaluated the effects of spring versus fall application of conventional urea and EENFs, including a polymer-coated urea (PCU; ESN), a nitrification inhibitor (NI; eNtrench), a dual urease inhibitor (Limus), and a urease and nitrification inhibit

Simultaneous petroleum hydrocarbon degradation and nitrogen removal by Acinetobacter sp. XF-5: Degradation mechanisms and temporal metabolic reprogramming.

Acinetobacter species capable of simultaneous total petroleum hydrocarbon degradation and heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification hold great promise for shale oil fracturing flowback fluid bioremediation. Nevertheless, metabolic regulation governing such coupled pollutant removal and enzyme-hydrocarbon multi-scale coupling mechanisms remain largely elusive. This study characterized the pollutant degradation performance and actual wastewater adaptability of Acinetobacter sp. XF-5, and explored core mechanisms underlying simultaneous total petroleum hydrocarbon degradation and effici

Polylactic acid microplastics increase N2O emissions from mainstream biological nitrogen removal systems: overlooked concern.

Despite being marketed as environmentally benign alternatives for conventional synthetic polymers, biodegradable plastics inevitably generate large amounts of microplastics, posing currently overlooked yet potentially significant environmental risks. This study selected polylactic acid microplastics (PLA-MPs) as model biodegradable microplastics to investigate their effects on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from a mainstream biological nitrogen removal system. Long-term exposure to PLA-MPs at environmentally relevant level (0.5 mg/L) increased the N2O emission factor by 28.9%, and inhibited max

Nitrate leaching losses and the fate of 15N fertilizer in perennial intermediate wheatgrass and annual wheat - A field study.

Perennial grains, such as the intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium) (IWG), may reduce negative environmental effects compared to annual grain crops. Their permanent, and generally larger, root systems are likely to retain nitrogen (N) better, decreasing harmful losses of N and improving fertilizer N use efficiency, but there have been no comprehensive N fertilizer recovery studies in IWG to date. We measured fertilizer N recovery with stable isotope tracers in crop biomass and soil, soil N mineralization and nitrification, and nitrate leaching in IWG and annual wheat in a replicated

Red mud mitigates NH3 and greenhouse gas emissions during composting: functional gene and microbial community regulation.

The composting of agricultural wastes is accompanied by NH3 and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Red mud, as a novel amendment, has been shown to accelerate humification of composting materials; however, its mechanisms of influencing NH3 and GHG emissions during composting remain unclear. This study investigated how the addition of 5% (w/w) red mud mitigated GHG and NH3 emissions during composting. The results showed that red mud addition effectively mitigated NH3 and GHG emissions during straw and horse manure co-composting, reducing NH3, CO2, and N2O emissions by 7.34%, 25.20%, and 28.90% com

Apparent partial denitrification and anammox contribution to nitrogen removal in full-scale multistage anoxic-oxic system treating food waste digestate.

Food waste digestate (FWD) contains high NH4+-N and total chemical oxygen demand (COD), but limited bioavailable carbon, challenging conventional nitrification-denitrification. This study quantified pollutant removal contributions across a full-scale multistage anoxic-oxic (A/O) system consisting of five reactors, A1, O1, O2, O3 and A2, and examined the factors underlying spatial functional differentiation. 15 field sampling campaigns were integrated with apparent nitrogen pathway partitioning, batch kinetic tests, dissolved organic matter (DOM) characterization, enzyme assays, and microbial c

Long-Term Low-DO Operation Changes the Ammonia Oxidizer Community and Oxygen Kinetics.

Low-dissolved oxygen (DO) biological nutrient removal is an attractive option for energy and cost reduction, but it is not common practice as critical outcomes remain uncertain. Open questions include whether ammonia-oxidizer oxygen kinetics are fixed or can adapt to operating conditions; whether low DO increases simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND); whether good settling can be maintained; and whether N2O emissions rise or fall at low DO. In this study, a continuously fed pilot anaerobic/oxic (A/O) process was run with 6.5- to 8.5-day solids retention time (SRT), stable temper

Response of microbial interactions in hybrid biofilm system with low organic loading to micropollutant removal.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are the most frequently observed micropollutants in the effluents of conventional wastewater treatment plants and hybrid technologies could be an alternative to conventional systems. However, the effect on micropollutants' removal has not been well studied. In this study, the impact of hybrid systems on micropollutant removal, as well as the determination of the dominant microbial communities, were investigated. For this purpose, laboratory-scale control hybrid and micropollutant-amended (1 μg/L of diclofenac, ketoprofen, indomethacin, and mefenamic

Side-stream fermentation drives partial denitrification/anammox for enhanced nitrogen removal and anaerobic ammonium oxidation bacteria enrichment in a flocs-based continuous-flow anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic system.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) is a promising technology for mainstream nitrogen removal. However, its application is limited by unstable partial nitrification (PN) and inadequate retention of anaerobic ammonium oxidation bacteria (AnAOB) in flocs. To overcome these bottlenecks, this study established a flocs-based continuous-flow anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (AOA) system coupled with a side-stream anaerobic fermenter. By introducing sludge fermentation liquid (SFL) and an anaerobic transfer line, the system was strategically shifted from unstable partial nitrification-denitrification to a

Nutrient removal efficacy and microbial dynamics in constructed wetlands using Fe(III)-mineral substrates for low carbon-nitrogen ratio sewage treatment.

This study evaluated the roles of two common sources of Fe(III)-minerals-volcanic rock (VR) and synthetic banded iron formations from waste iron tailings (BIF-W)-in vertical flow-constructed wetlands (VFCWs). The evaluation was conducted in the absence of critical environmental factors, including Fe(II), Fe(III), and soil organic matter (SOM), using metagenomic analysis and integrated correlation networks to predict nitrogen removal pathways. Our findings revealed that Fe(III)-minerals enhanced metabolic activities and cellular processes related to carbohydrate decomposition, thereby increasin
