Nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres with tunable shell thickness for high-performance supercapacitors.

Nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres (NHCSs) are well prepared by using Cu2O microspheres as a hard template and 3-aminophenol formaldehyde resin polymer as carbon and nitrogen precursors. The thickness of the carbon shell can be easily controlled in the range of 15-84 nm by simply adjusting the weight ratios of the precursors to Cu2O microspheres, and the Cu2O templates can also be further reused. Physicochemical characterization demonstrates that the obtained NHCSs possess a well-developed hollow spherical structure, thin carbon shell and high nitrogen doping content. Due to these characteri

Nitrogen/sulfur co-doped ordered carbon nanoarrays for superior sulfur hosts in lithium-sulfur batteries.

A universal and low-cost biomass waste, soybean residue, that was derived from a soybean product processing plant, was used to fabricate nitrogen/sulfur co-doped, ordered carbon nanoarrays (NS-OCNA/S). The effects of nitrogen and sulfur co-doping and the addition of formaldehyde on the structure and properties of these novel materials were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques and galvanostatic charge/discharge tests. With high levels of sulfur doping, the nitrogen/sulfur co-doped ordered carbon nanoarrays (NS-OCNA/S) were

Beyond waste: arginine metabolism and ammonium detoxification in cardiovascular-renal-metabolic disease.

Ammonium is a toxic product of amino acid degradation and protein turnover that is incorporated into arginine and detoxified via the urea cycle. Recent work has expanded the role of ammonium detoxification and the urea cycle toward broader metabolic functions. This review examines how ammonium and urea cycle-related metabolites function beyond nitrogen disposal and work as bioactive regulators across the cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic disease spectrum. We discuss how interorgan coordination among the gut, liver, kidney, heart, and immune system links arginine metabolism, ammonium detoxif

Effects of Bradyrhizobium Co-Inoculated with Bacillus and Paenibacillus on the Structure and Functional Genes of Soybean Rhizobacteria Community.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are widely used to improve soil nutrients and promote plant growth and health. However, the growth-promoting effect of a single PGPR on plants is limited. Here, we evaluated the effect of applying rhizobium Bradyrhizobium japonicum 5038 (R5038) and two PGPR strains, Bacillus aryabhattai MB35-5 (BA) and Paenibacillus mucilaginosus 3016 (PM), alone or in different combinations on the soil properties and rhizosphere bacterial community composition of soybean (Glycine max). Additionally, metagenomic sequencing was performed to elucidate the profile of fu

Introducing biological phosphorus removal in an alternating plant by means of control: a full scale study.

In this paper, a control strategy for introducing enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) in an alternating plant designed for enhanced biological nitrogen removal (EBNR) is presented. Alternating aerobic and anaerobic conditions to promote EBPR are provided by controlling the phases of the operational cycle, instead of a separate anaerobic volume. By utilising the control schemes already built in the STAR control system for nitrogen removal, the control strategy is fully integrated in the system. The control system relies on on-line measurements of nitrogen (ammonia and/or nitrate) and

Nanosheet arrays of iron oxide for enhanced ammonia synthesis via electrochemical nitrogen reduction for prospective algal membrane bioreactors.

The earth's nitrogen cycle relies on the effective conversion of nitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NH3). As a result, the research and development of catalysts that are earth-abundant, inexpensive, and highly efficient but do not need precious metals is of the utmost significance. In this investigation, we present a controlled synthesis technique to the fabrication of an iron oxide (Fe2O3) nanosheet array by annealing at temperatures ranging from 350 to 550 °C. This array will be used for the electrochemical reduction of atmospheric N2 to NH3 in electrolytes. The Fe2O3 nanosheet array that was produce

Diversity and ecology of microbial sulfur metabolism.

Sulfur plays a pivotal role in interactions within the atmosphere, lithosphere, pedosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere, and the functioning of living organisms. In the Earth's crust, mantle, and atmosphere, sulfur undergoes geochemical transformations due to natural and anthropogenic factors. In the biosphere, sulfur participates in the formation of amino acids, proteins, coenzymes and vitamins. Microorganisms in the biosphere are crucial for cycling sulfur compounds through oxidation, reduction and disproportionation reactions, facilitating their bioassimilation and energy generation. Microbia

Robust Covalent Organic Frameworks Comprising Accessible Catalytic Sites Enable Fast-Charging and Long-Cycling Aluminum-Sulfur Batteries.

Rechargeable aluminum-sulfur (Al-S) batteries are recognized as a promising option for large-scale energy storage due to high theoretical energy density and cost-effectiveness. However, the sulfur cathodes suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics and severe shuttle effect during cycling. Here we report robust two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as sulfur hosts that features accessible catalytic nitrogen sites and confined microporous channels. The fine regulation of different microporous sizes was achieved by controlling different-length organic ligands of various COFs, finally pr

Energy, industry and nitrogen: strategies for decreasing reactive nitrogen emissions.

Nitrogen oxides are released during atmospheric combustion of fossil fuels and biomass, and during the production of certain chemicals and products. They can react with natural or man-made volatile organic compounds to produce smog, or else can be further oxidized to produce particulate haze, or acid rain that can eutrophy land and water. The reactive nitrogen that begins in the energy sector thus cascades through the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and soils before being eventually partially denitrifed to the global warming and stratospheric ozone-depleting gas nitrous oxide or molecular nitrogen

[Biochemical and pathophysiological aspects of hyperammonaemia (author's transl)].

1. Ammonia liberated continuously in large amounts in muscle, kidney and brain is used immediately for the synthesis of mainly glutamine because of the toxic effects of elevated ammonia concentrations. After glutamine hydrolysis in the liver ammonia serves as substrate for the urea biosynthesis. In ureotelic animals urea is the quantitatively most important product for the elimination of surplus nitrogen. 2. The rate of urea biosynthesis depends on the amount of surplus nitrogen and acts as regulatory factor for the nitrogen balance of the adult organism. 3. Urea cycle abnormalities in liver d

Engineering interfacial electron flux in transition metal-microbe systems for anaerobic nitrogen transformation.

Anaerobic nitrogen transformation under electron-limited conditions, including low C/N and low-temperature environments, suffers from insufficient electron flux, compromising kinetics, pathway completion, and N2 selectivity. Conventional carbon supplementation is costly and unsustainable, driving demand for alternative electron supply. Photo-driven transition metal-microbe hybrids enable regulated interfacial electron delivery. This review establishes interfacial electron flux as a governing concept for the engineering of electron-limited nitrogen transformation. Bidirectional electron exchang

Dynamics of nitrogen oxides emissions in the pilot wastewater treatment plant: Characteristics and mechanisms.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx), consisting of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), pose significant risks to human health and the environment, potentially causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. In contrast to extensive research on industrial NOx emissions, there has been a paucity of attention on the dynamics of NOx in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This study investigated NOx emission patterns in a pilot-scale WWTP, revealing that NO dominated NOx emissions (0.013 % of the nitrogen load), peaking nocturnally (4 a.m.- 6 a.m.) and primarily originating from the oxic zone due to

Understanding the Crucial Role of Phosphate and Iron Availability in Regulating Root Nodule Symbiosis.

The symbiosis between legumes and nitrogen-fixing bacteria (rhizobia) is instrumental in sustaining the nitrogen cycle and providing fixed nitrogen to the food chain. Both partners must maintain an efficient nutrient exchange to ensure a successful symbiosis. This mini-review highlights the intricate phosphate and iron uptake and homeostasis processes taking place in legumes during their interactions with rhizobia. The coordination of transport and homeostasis of these nutrients in host plants and rhizobia ensures an efficient nitrogen fixation process and nutrient use. We discuss the genetic

Climate change impacts of US reactive nitrogen.

Fossil fuel combustion and fertilizer application in the United States have substantially altered the nitrogen cycle, with serious effects on climate change. The climate effects can be short-lived, by impacting the chemistry of the atmosphere, or long-lived, by altering ecosystem greenhouse gas fluxes. Here we develop a coherent framework for assessing the climate change impacts of US reactive nitrogen emissions, including oxides of nitrogen, ammonia, and nitrous oxide (N(2)O). We use the global temperature potential (GTP), calculated at 20 and 100 y, in units of CO(2) equivalents (CO(2)e), as

Effect of alternative pathway therapy on branched chain amino acid metabolism in urea cycle disorder patients.

Urea cycle disorders (UCDs) are a group of inborn errors of hepatic metabolism caused by the loss of enzymatic activities that mediate the transfer of nitrogen from ammonia to urea. These disorders often result in life-threatening hyperammonemia and hyperglutaminemia. A combination of sodium phenylbutyrate and sodium phenylacetate/benzoate is used in the clinical management of children with urea cycle defects as a glutamine trap, diverting nitrogen from urea synthesis to alternatives routes of excretion. We have observed that patients treated with these compounds have selective branched chain

Deciphering Sulfur-Based Denitrification in Confined Alluvial-Lacustrine Aquifers through Multi-isotope (15N, 34S, 13C, and 18O) and Metagenomic Analyses.

Sulfur-based denitrification offers unique advantages in nitrogen removal in low-carbon environments. Despite its importance, the prevalence, controlling factors, and microbial mediators of sulfur-based denitrification in aquifers remain largely unknown. By integrating multiple stable isotopes and genome-resolved metagenomics, we investigated the coupling of nitrogen and sulfur cycling along the groundwater flowpath from unconfined to confined alluvial-lacustrine aquifers in the Poyang Lake Plain, China. A Key Metabolic Protein in Active Mycobacterium tuberculosis: Insights into Carbon, Nitrogen, and Sulfur Metabolism.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) employs a highly adaptable network of metabolic pathways that are pivotal for its survival and pathogenesis within the host during both exponential growth and persistent infection phases. Central carbon metabolism in Mtb exhibits remarkable flexibility, enabling the bacterium to utilize diverse carbon sources efficiently. In the absence of glucose, Mtb preferentially metabolizes fatty acids as primary carbon substrates. This metabolic shift is supported by the glyoxylate shunt and methyl citrate cycle, which replenish tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle intermediate

The Key Role of Sulfate in the Photochemical Renoxification on Real PM2.5.

The active nitrogen species (HONO, NO, and NO2) have important impacts on the atmospheric oxidative capacity and the transformation of many atmospheric species. In this study, a fast photochemical renoxification rate of adsorbed HNO3/NO3- to active nitrogen species (HONO, NO, and NO2) was detected on real urban PM2.5, and sulfate was found to play a key role in this process. Different from the reported direct photolysis pathway, the photochemical reaction of HNO3/NO3- on PM2.5 is dominated by a photosensitizing mechanism. Acidic protons are proved to be essential for this pathway. The role of

Geobacter-based syntrophy drives biogenic element cycling in anoxic soils: a review.

Microbial syntrophy is a central organizing principle in anoxic soils, where the degradation of organic matter and the cycling of nitrogen, sulfur, and iron are constrained by electron availability and thermodynamics. Among soil anaerobes, Geobacter species occupy a distinctive ecological anoxic niche in which they form syntrophy relationship with partner cells to exchange electrons for anaerobic carbon mineralization, methane production, nitrate reduction, sulfur and Fe(III) reduction. Here, we review how Geobacter-based syntrophy contributes to C/N/S/Fe cycling in anoxic soils. We first summ
