OBJECTIVE: The study focused on children's nonverbal behavior in investigative interviews exploring suspicions of child abuse. The key aims were to determine whether non-verbal behavior in the pre-substantive phases of the interview predicted whether or not children would disclose the alleged abuse later in the interview and to identify differences in the nonverbal behaviors of disclosing and non-disclosing children.
METHOD: We studied DVD-recorded interviews of 40 alleged victims of child abuse. In all cases, there was external evidence strongly suggesting that abuse had occurred. However, h

Humans and other animals express power through open, expansive postures, and they express powerlessness through closed, contractive postures. But can these postures actually cause power? The results of this study confirmed our prediction that posing in high-power nonverbal displays (as opposed to low-power nonverbal displays) would cause neuroendocrine and behavioral changes for both male and female participants: High-power posers experienced elevations in testosterone, decreases in cortisol, and increased feelings of power and tolerance for risk; low-power posers exhibited the opposite patter

We tested whether listeners are differentially responsive to the presence or absence of voicing, a salient, distinguishing acoustic feature, in laughter. Each of 128 participants rated 50 voiced and 20 unvoiced laughs twice according to one of five different rating strategies. Results were highly consistent regardless of whether participants rated their own emotional responses, likely responses of other people, or one of three perceived attributes concerning the laughers, thus indicating that participants were experiencing similarly differentiated affective responses in all these cases. Schizophrenia has been associated with abnormalities in recognising social emotions, inferring others' mental states and in gaze and visual scanning behaviours. Eye expression is known to convey considerable information in normal circumstances. Our study assessed the ability of individuals with schizophrenia to recognise simple and complex mental states from eye expressions alone. Sixteen individuals with a DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia following SCAN [Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (Wing JK, Babor T, Brugha T, Burke J, Cooper JE, Giel R et al. The study compared the nonverbal decoding abilities of normal-hearing and hard-of-hearing older adults using the Profile of Nonverbal Sensitivity (PONS). The PONS test allowed the measurement of subjects' decoding accuracy for a variety of nonverbal cues presented under two auditory, three visual, and six audiovisual conditions. Nonverbal perceptual scores were lower for the hearing-impaired group under all presentation conditions. Perception of prosodic features of speech by hearing-impaired subjects was significantly related to low-frequency hearing sensitivity. Between-group differences in

The acuity card procedure was used to assess the visual acuity of 510 neurologically normal and abnormal infants and children. Acuity estimates were obtained for 93 per cent of 842 binocular and 279 monocular tests. The observed development of binocular acuity of normal fullterm and preterm infants agreed well with previous reports using the traditional forced-choice preferential looking technique. Monocular tests seemed to support earlier suggestions that grating acuity may be relatively insensitive to strabismic amblyopia. Infants at risk of later neurological deficits but developing normall

The study investigated the ability of 10 patients with Asperger's syndrome to recognize and produce non-verbal aspects of facial and spoken (e.g. vocal intonation) communication by use of photographs, audiotape and videotape. It also aimed to establish materials to differentiate individuals with this condition from a comparable non-Asperger group. Asperger subjects tended to be poorer than comparable patients on all subtests.

PURPOSE: In this research, the authors examined how social communication profiles during classroom activities differed between children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and typically developing pair-matched peers.
METHOD: Twelve pairs of children were observed in their classrooms 20 min a day for 4 days across 2 weeks. Coders documented classroom social communication by recording performance on handheld computers using the Social Communication Coding System (L. B. Olswang, L. Svensson, T. E. Coggins, J. Beilinson, & A. L. Donaldson, 2006). The Social Communication Coding System co

A boy, aged 7 months, presented with severe global developmental delay (GDD), refractory epilepsy, hypotonia, nystagmus, ocular hypertelorism, a broad nasal bridge, everted upper lip, a high palatal arch, and cryptorchidism. Genetic testing revealed a de novo heterozygous missense mutation of c.364G>A(p.E122K) in the EEF1A2 gene, and finally the boy was diagnosed with autosomal dominant developmental and epileptic encephalopathy 33 caused by the EEF1A2 gene mutation. This case report suggests that for children with unexplained infancy-onset severe to profound GDD/intellectual disability and re

The purpose of the present study was to see if 7-10-year-old socially anxious children (n = 26) made systematic errors in identifying and sending emotions in facial expressions, paralanguage, and postures as compared with the more random errors of children who were inattentive-hyperactive (n = 21). It was found that socially anxious children made more errors in identifying anger and fear in children's facial expressions and anger in adults' postures and in expressing anger in their own facial expressions than did their inattentive-hyperactive peers. Results suggest that there may be systematic

The present case-study investigates practices in interaction that manifest themselves as active participation for three Swedish children who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Analyses are based on interaction data from three different settings, involving the children in dialogue with adults as well as peers. In-depth analysis of the data by means of Conversation Analysis revealed three practices conducive for active participation. The first one dealt with experiencing a sense of control, i.e. that the child who uses AAC was treated as a competent communicator, e.g. initiati

Asperger's syndrome symptoms in children, adolescents and young adults. Asperger syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopemental disorder which is classified into autism- spectrums disorders (ASDs). AS is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, stereotyped and restricted patterns of behaviour, activities and interests. There is no clinically significant delay in cognitive development nor general delay in language. However, there are specific abnormalities such as literal interpretations, miscomprehension of nuance, unusually pedantic and formal speec

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common motor neuron disease, leading to progressive paralysis, dysarthria, dysphagia, and respiratory disabilities. Therapy is mostly focused on palliative interventions. During the course of the disease, verbal as well as nonverbal communicative abilities become more and more impaired. In this light, communication has been argued to be "the essence of human life" and crucial for patients' quality of life. High-tech augmentative and alternative communication (HT-AAC) technologies such as eyetracking based computer devices and brain-computer-inter

UNLABELLED: This study assessed the relation between pre-intervention variables (cognition, socialization and communication) to outcome in young children with autism.
METHOD: Twenty five children with autism (20-32 months) were enrolled in intensive behavior intervention. The children were divided into groups based on their IQ scores and on the severity of their social interaction and communication deficits [per autism diagnostic observation schedule (ADOS) scores]. Six developmental-behavioral domains including, imitation, receptive language, expressive language, nonverbal communication skil

Oral narrative retelling is often problematic for children with communicative and neurodevelopmental disorders. However, beyond a suggested role of language level, little is known about the basis of narrative performance. In this study we examine whether oral narrative retelling might be associated not just with language level but also with skills related to nonverbal narrative temporal sequencing. A diagnostically heterogeneous sample of Swedish-speaking children with a full scale IQ >70 was included in the study (N = 55; age 6-9 years). Narrative retelling skills were measured using the thre

BACKGROUND: More refined dimensions of social-communication impairment are needed to elucidate the clinical and biological boundaries of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other childhood onset psychiatric disorders associated with social difficulties, as well as to facilitate investigations in treatment and long-term outcomes of these disorders.
METHODS: This study was intended to identify separable dimensions of clinician-observed social-communication impairments by examining scores on a widely used autism diagnostic instrument. Participants included verbally fluent children ages 3-13 year

PURPOSE: Shared book reading (SBR) is well-suited to children with Down syndrome (DS), yet evidence on parent-child communication during SBR remains limited. This exploratory observational study examined parental behaviours, interaction and communication, and child engagement and multimodal communication during SBR with children with DS (n = 12; 24-45 months), a typically developing (TD) group similar on chronological age (AM; n = 10; 25-47 months) and a TD group similar on receptive vocabulary (LM; n = 10; 12-29 months).
METHOD: Parent-child dyads were video-recorded sharing an unfamiliar pi

Effective communication skills among nurses, coupled with high-quality nursing care, are essential components of healthcare services. Both communication and care are abstract, multifaceted processes that are uniquely perceived by patients, with their effects directly impacting patient experiences. Thus, understanding patient perspectives is vital for delivering high-quality, patient-centered healthcare. This study aimed to examine inpatients' perceptions of nursing care, assess their views on nurses' communication skills, and explore the relationship between these perceptions. This cross-secti
