OBJECTIVE: To assess the nutritional status of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients with no other associated dementia, according to disease stage.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional observational study.
SETTING: Neurobehavioral Diseases Outpatient Clinic, Clinical Hospital, Ribeirao Preto Medical School (University of São Paulo).

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study is to evaluate the nutritional status of patients with oral maxillofacial cancer.
METHODS: The nutritional status was evaluated using seven easily determined variables and multi-factor nutritional index in 50 hospitalized patients with oral maxillofacial cancer from 1990 to 1992.
RESULTS: Fifty-six percent of patients had protein-energy malnutrition. The high incidence of protein-energy malnutrition was found in those patients without adequate dietary intake.

Nutritional status and body composition of 26 young female gymnasts (average age 12 years) were studied. The body fat percentage (15% of total body weight) is low, still consistent with an excellent health. The caloric intake is lower (1552 kcal/day) than that recommended for their age group, however it is still within the standard by body weight (43 kcal/kg). They show and insufficient assumption of carbohydrates (47.7%), mineral salts and vitamins, so that a more detailed alimentary information is required in order to avoid undesired consequences on sport performance and growth rate.

To clarify whether manganese nutritional status is better reflected by the manganese concentration in lymphocytes or in whole blood, we injected manganese solutions intravenously into manganese-deficient rats and determined manganese concentrations in lymphocytes, whole blood, and various tissues.
