Risk analysis : an official publication of the Society for Risk Analysis2019eng
Reducing the incidence of seafarers' workplace injuries is of great importance to shipping and ship management companies. The objective of this study is to identify the important influencing factors and to build a quantitative model for the injury risk analysis aboard ships, so as to provide a decision support framework for effective injury prevention and management. Most of the previous research on seafarers' occupational accidents either adopts a qualitative approach or applies simple descriptive statistics for analyses. In this study, the advanced method of a Bayesian network (BN) is used f

Dermatologists and their staff are at risk for needlestick injuries and exposures to body fluids. Despite the availability of treatment to reduce the risk of blood-borne infection, many exposures go unreported. This paper identifies current recommendations and the specific details for response to occupational exposures to HIV, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus in the dermatology office. Issues surrounding each virus are discussed individually, and a summary step-by-step algorithm of how to proceed in the event of an occupational exposure is presented. In addition, a focused Practice Imp

This study was performed to determine the differences in occupational injuries and illnesses between white-collar and blue-collar workers and to estimate the magnitude of the underreporting of these injuries and illnesses in Korea. Two datasets were used. One was a cohort established in the Gyeongin area with workers who underwent mandated health examinations, and the other was the National Health Insurance (NHI) data of claims submitted by workers employed between 1999 and 2001. Workers were classified into two groups--white-collar and blue-collar workers--according to their job types and the

OBJECTIVE: Risk of knee osteoarthritis (OA) associated with constitutional factors, history of joint injuries, and occupational factors was assessed in a case-control study among women in Japan. Results were contrasted with a comparable study in Britain.
METHODS: The study covered 3 health districts in Japan. Cases were women aged >/= 45 years old, diagnosed with knee OA by orthopedic physicians utilizing radiography. No cases displayed established causes of secondary OA. Controls selected randomly from the general population were individually matched to each case for age, sex, and residentia

We studied occupational injuries with captive lance-headed vipers (Bothrops moojeni) that occurred in a snake farm in south-eastern Brazil from February 1981 to May 1999. The risk of injury, taking into account 13 cases of snake-associated injuries (12 of them snake bites) was 2.73 per 10,000 person-days of work, and 3.51 per 100,000 venom extractions. Thirteen cases of injury occurred in seven workers, whereas 18 workers were never injured, suggesting that some individuals have a higher risk of injury than others perhaps due to lack of concentration or overconfidence. Eight episodes of occupa

BACKGROUND: Home health services represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the US economy. Home health care workers (HHCWs) might be expected to have a high incidence and increased severity of injury because of inherent difficulty in control over their work environment, and the limited amount of research on injuries in home health care appears to support this hypothesis.
METHODS: Using data on workers' compensation claims for 1995-1996 from a large state database, we calculated the incidence, frequency, and types of injuries occurring in this working population. Comparison data were dr

OBJECTIVE: To use national data to identify risk factors for occupational genitourinary (GU) injuries and to expose potential workplace safety issues requiring national regulation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The National Trauma Data Bank was queried to identify all adults who suffered a work-related GU injury from 2007 to 2016. Injury was stratified by individual organ and by organ type: intra-abdominopelvic (IAP) vs external genitalia (EG). Distinct multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine associations between prespecified risk factors and GU injury (organ and type) and to i

This study aimed to describe the characteristics of occupational injuries of female workers in residential healthcare facilities for the elderly, and to analyze human errors as causes of accidents. From the national industrial accident compensation data, 506 female injuries were analyzed by age and occupation. The results showed that medical service worker was the most prevalent (54.1%), followed by social welfare worker (20.4%). Among injuries, 55.7% had <1 year of work experience and 37.9% were aged ≥60 years. Slips/falls were the most common type of accident (42.7%), and the proportion inju

BACKGROUND: Collection of household waste is a job which requires repeated heavy physical activities such as lifting, carrying, pulling, and pushing. Like many developing countries, in Ethiopia municipal solid waste is collected manually. Therefore, this study is aimed to assess the extent of occupational injuries and associated factors among solid waste collectors in Addis Ababa City.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 876 respondents sampled from 92 unions. A pre-tested structured questionnaire and observation check list were used to collect data. Crude odds ratio with 95%

Systematic reviews of literature relevant to individuals with work-related injuries and illnesses are important to the practice of occupational therapy. This article describes the four questions that served as the focus for the systematic reviews of the effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions for individuals with work-related injuries and illnesses of the low back; hand, wrist, and forearm; elbow; and shoulder. The article includes the background for the reviews; the process followed for each question, including search terms and search strategy; the databases searched; and the meth

OBJECTIVES: A case-crossover study was conducted to identify transient risk factors for occupational acute hand injuries.
METHODS: In total, 98 subjects were recruited from a hospital specializing in occupational accidents and trauma. Patients who had injured fingers, hands or wrists during work were interviewed within 30 days after their accidents.
RESULTS: The relative risks for each factor were as follows: 22.9 for unusual or malfunctioning machines (95% confidence interval [CI] 14.4-36.4), 3.3 for wearing gloves (95% CI 1.9-5.7), 5.7 for unusual tasks (95% CI 3.8-8.8), 12.1 for altered w

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) are susceptible to occupational musculoskeletal injuries. The purpose of this study was to examine the reported causes and prevalence of occupational musculoskeletal injuries to PTs and PTAs during a 2-year period.
SUBJECTS: A questionnaire was mailed to 500 PTs and 500 PTAs randomly selected from the American Physical Therapy Association 1996 active membership list. Six hundred sixty-seven questionnaires were returned, giving a response rate of 67%.
METHOD: Based on a literature review and a pilot stu

Anti-vehicular (AV) landmines and improvised explosive devices (IED) have accounted for more than half of the United States military hostile casualties and wounded in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) (Department of Defense Personnel & Procurement Statistics, 2009). The lower extremity is the predominantly injured body region following an AV mine or IED blast accounting for 26 percent of all combat injuries in OIF (Owens et al., 2007). Detonations occurring under the vehicle transmit high amplitude and short duration axial loads onto the foot-ankle-tibia region of the occupant causing injuries to

BACKGROUND: Among working-age populations globally, occupational injuries and workplace cardiovascular emergencies remain major contributors to morbidity and mortality. This study examined the associations between workplace settings, age groups, and the severity of occupational injuries and cardiovascular events.
METHODS: We conducted a nationwide retrospective registry-based observational study using emergency medical services data from Japan, including 454 043 working-age individuals recorded in 2021-2023. Workplace settings (office, indoor worksite, factory, outdoor worksite, construction,

BACKGROUND: Needle stick injuries (NSIs) represent a serious occupational hazard for healthcare workers (HCWs), particularly in surgical departments like orthopaedics. Beyond the risk of blood-borne infections, NSIs can cause significant psychological distress.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the incidence of NSIs and associated psychological outcomes such as stress, anxiety, and PTSD among doctors and nurses in the orthopaedics department.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 337 HCWs was conducted using a structured online questionnaire. Data on demographics, NSI experience, reporting behavior, anxi
