Aedes aegypti is a competent vector for a variety of mosquito-borne viruses including Zika, chikungunya, Mayaro, yellow fever, and dengue, which cause debilitating diseases in animals and humans. It is highly invasive and is widely distributed across Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas. Climatic factors such as relative humidity (RH) can have substantial effects on mosquito biological characteristics and the dynamics of pathogen spread. Low RH leads to dehydration in mosquitoes causing modifications in behavioral and physiological responses pertaining to pathogen spread, such as host-seeki

Several studies have documented a relationship between short-term exposure to atmospheric sulfur dioxide (SO2) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, findings vary across different regions. This meta-analysis employed a random-effects model to calculate the combined risk estimate for each 10-μg/m3 increase in ambient SO2 concentration. Subgroup analysis aimed to identify sources of heterogeneity. To assess potential bias, studies were evaluated using a domain-based assessment tool developed by the World Health Organization. Sensitivity analyses, based on bias risk, explored

Scrub typhus (tsutsugamushi disease) is an acute febrile illness caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, often found in Asia and Oceania. The presence of an eschar, characterized by a crust, is a key diagnostic finding. Many symptoms of this disease are already known, however reactive arthritis following scrub typhus is very rare. Here, we present a case of 79-year-old man who was referred to our hospital because of continuous fever and left shoulder pain. We found 4-fold rise in Orientia tsutugamushi-specific IgG titer using paired serum samples and Orientia sp. genes by real-time PCR from a crust

OBJECTIVE: Nearly one-fifth of the worldwide burden of cancer-related deaths among Indian women is attributable to cervical cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) mandates that 90% of adolescent girls receive the HPV vaccine by age 15 to achieve cervical cancer elimination. Integrating the HPV vaccine into the Universal Immunization Program is necessary to accomplish this in India.
METHOD: To provide clarity on HPV vaccination dosage, schedules, and delivery methods, AOGIN India has developed this policy statement based on the most recent evidence from both India and around the world, in

The discovery of autoantibodies directed against the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR) enzyme has defined a sub-set of immune-mediated necrotising myopathy (IMNM) which is strongly associated with exposure to statin medications. Although understanding of anti-HMGCR IMNM has grown considerably with the reporting of multiple cohorts in North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania, there remain many unanswered questions. The true incidence of anti-HMGCR IMNM is not known and heterogeneity of phenotype and treatment response within this autoantibody sub-group is being increasingly recogn

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is considered to be a major problem in pregnant women. It is also one of the most prevalent infections during pregnancy, being diagnosed in as many as 50-60% of all gestations. Therefore, UTI treatment during pregnancy is extremely important and management guidelines have been published worldwide to assist physicians in selecting the right antibiotic for each patient, taking into account the maternal and fetal safety profile. A review of the literature was carried out and all international guidelines giving recommendations about antibiotic treatments for pregnancy

Rabies is a major neglected zoonotic disease and causes a substantial burden in the Asian region. Currently, Pacific Oceania is free of rabies but enzootic areas throughout southeast Asia represent a major risk of disease introduction to this region. On September 25-26, 2019, researchers, government officials and related stakeholders met at an IABS conference in Bangkok, Thailand to engage on the topic of human rabies mediated by dogs. The objective of the meeting was focused upon snowballing efforts towards achieving substantial progress in rabies prevention, control and elimination within As

Severe malaria is common in tropical countries in Africa, Asia, Oceania and South and Central America. It may also occur in travelers returning from endemic areas. Plasmodium falciparum accounts for most cases, although P vivax is increasingly found to cause severe malaria in Asia. Cerebral malaria is common in children in Africa, manifests as coma and seizures, and has a high morbidity and mortality. In other regions, adults may also develop cerebral malaria but neurological sequelae in survivors are rare. Acute kidney injury, liver dysfunction, thrombocytopenia, disseminated intravascular co

Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile DNA sequences that can proliferate within host genomes, occasionally capable of crossing species boundaries via horizontal transfer (HT). Here, we report the discovery and characterization of Kuruka, a recently invading TE in natural D. melanogaster populations. Kuruka encodes an envelope protein and belongs to the gypsy/gypsy superfamily, also called insect endogenous retroviruses. Analysis of over 1000 D. melanogaster genomes revealed that Kuruka first appeared in sub-Saharan Africa in 2010. Kuruka had spread to Asia, Europe and America in 2017-2019, an

The human breast milk microbiota plays a key role in newborn microbial colonization. Its composition varies throughout the postpartum period and is modulated by maternal and perinatal factors. This scoping review aimed to systematically map current knowledge of the breast milk bacterial microbiota in healthy lactating women and describe its compositional dynamics in relation to identified modulating factors. A systematic search was conducted across five databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science) following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines targeting studies that used

Dengue virus (DENV) is widely distributed across Africa but underreported due to limited surveillance and diagnostic capacity. Under an acute febrile illness surveillance protocol, we collected and screened 374 samples from patients with fever in Mogadishu, Somalia. Samples were screened for DENV serotypes using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, and positive samples were sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed. We identified 55 samples containing orthoflavivirus RNA (14.7%). Of these 55 samples, three dengue serotypes, DENV serotype 1 (DENV-1, n = 24), DENV serotype 2

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a mosquito-borne orthoflavivirus that can cause severe neurological disease in humans and reproductive disorders in swine, posing a persistent threat to public health and the swine industry. Despite being vaccine-preventable, the virus remains endemic in 24 countries and territories throughout Asia and Oceania, underscoring the urgent need for safer and more effective vaccines to counter this ongoing threat. In this study, we developed the nanoparticle vaccines by covalently conjugating 60 copies of EDIII or NS1 protein subunits to the self-assembling mi3 p

Non-polio enteroviruses continue to cause numerous epidemics world-wide that range from mild to severe disease, including acute flaccid paralysis, meningitis, severe respiratory infections and encephalitis. Using publicly available data we present a comprehensive global and regional temporal distribution of non-polio enteroviruses, with a focus on highly prevalent genotypes. We found that regional distribution did vary compared to global prevalence where the top prevalent genotypes included CVA6 and EV-A71 in Asia, EV-D68 in North America and CVA13 in Africa, while E-30 was prevalent in Europe

Salvia plebeia (Lamiaceae) is a valuable medicinal plant widely distributed across Asia and Oceania. However, the composition and accumulation patterns of its active ingredients in different organs during the growth and their biosynthetic mechanism remain unknown. Therefore, we conducted metabolite profiling, transcriptomic analysis, and biological functional verification to explore the distribution, accumulation, and biosynthesis mechanisms of flavonoids in S. plebeia. We identified 70 metabolites including 46 flavonoids, 16 phenolic acids, seven terpenoids, and one organic acid, of which 21
