Endoscopic surgery for sinonasal tumors: The transcribriform approach.

Over the past 10 to 20 years, endoscopic endonasal surgery has become for many teams the preferred treatment for sinonasal tumors. Technical advances in the field of surgical instrumentation (good visualization, hemostasis…) and the progress of imaging guidance (to avoid neurovascular complication) has made those procedures simpler and safer. Nevertheless, endonasal endoscopic procedures require a trained surgical team of ENT specialist and neurosurgeon. Endoscopic endonasal surgery has been reported to be feasible for all types of sinonasal tumors whether benign tumors such as inverted papill

Canine Olfactory Detection of SARS-COV2-Infected Patients: A One Health Approach.

The aim of the present study is to apply the canine olfactory sensitivity to detect COVID-19-positive axillary sweat samples as a One Health approach in Latin America. One hundred volunteers with COVID-like symptoms were invited to participate, and both axillary sweat samples for dog detection and nasopharynx/oropharynx swabs for qPCR were collected. Two dogs, previously trained, detected 97.4% of the samples positive for COVID-19, including a false-negative qPCR-test, and the positive predictive value was 100% and the negative predictive value was 98.2%. Therefore, we can conclude that canine

Anosmia in the course of COVID-19: A case report.

RATIONALE: A sudden onset of anosmia has been recently recognized as a symptom of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we describe a case of complete anosmia in a young male with COVID-19. Although he had fever and odynophagia, no abnormalities were observed in his nasopharyngeal mucosa, suggesting that his anosmia resulted from olfactory neuropathy. DIAGNOSES: COVID-19 was confirmed by RNA detection in nasopharyngeal swab specimen. INTERVENTIONS: The patient received olfactory training and B complex vitamins. OUTCOMES: On day 30, the patient reported complete recovery o

Olfactory Cues and Patient Safety Behavior in Virtual Reality Medical Simulation: Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Simulation-based medical education is essential for improving patient safety. In virtual reality (VR)-based simulation, immersion is primarily generated through visual and auditory cues, while other sensory modalities are typically absent. This sensory limitation may reduce the emergence of authentic safety-relevant behaviors. Olfaction plays an important role in clinical reasoning, risk perception, and self-protective behavior and is closely linked to memory and emotion. Although olfactory cues have been shown to influence hand hygiene behavior in real or simulated environments, t

Mutants of the white ABCG Transporter in Drosophila melanogaster Have Deficient Olfactory Learning and Cholesterol Homeostasis.

Drosophila's white gene encodes an ATP-binding cassette G-subfamily (ABCG) half-transporter. White is closely related to mammalian ABCG family members that function in cholesterol efflux. Mutants of white have several behavioral phenotypes that are independent of visual defects. This study characterizes a novel defect of white mutants in the acquisition of olfactory memory using the aversive olfactory conditioning paradigm. The w1118 mutants learned slower than wildtype controls, yet with additional training, they reached wildtype levels of performance. The w1118 learning phenotype is also fou

Skin-Integrated Wireless Odor Message Delivery Electronics for the Deaf-blind.

Deaf-blindness limits daily human activities, especially interactive modes of audio and visual perception. Although the developed standards have been verified as alternative communication methods, they are uncommon to the nondisabled due to the complicated learning process and inefficiency in terms of communicating distance and throughput. Therefore, the development of communication techniques employing innate sensory abilities including olfaction related to the cerebral limbic system processing emotions, memories, and recognition has been suggested for reducing the training level and increasi

Digitized canine olfaction and multimodal biosensing for breath-based multi-cancer detection: a hypothesis-driven perspective.

Multi-cancer early detection (MCED) is critical for reducing cancer mortality, however current screening technologies have limitations in accessibility, cost, and early stage sensitivity. Breath-based detection using volatile organic compounds (VOCs) offers a non-invasive and scalable alternative, with trained detection dogs demonstrating exceptional olfactory sensitivity in clinical studies. However, the widespread deployment of canine scent detection has been hindered by subjectivity and lack of standardization. This perspective article proposes a novel canine olfaction based MCED platform t

The optimal evaluation and management of patients with a gradual onset of olfactory loss.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the causes of olfactory dysfunction, their evaluation and management, with a main focus on the gradual/progressive loss of smell. RECENT FINDINGS: As the sense of smell gives us essential information about our environment, its loss can cause nutritional and social problems while threatening an individual's safety. Recent surveys have shown quite a substantial prevalence of hyposmia (one out of four people) and anosmia (one out of 200 people) in a variety of populations. SUMMARY: Nasal inflammatory diseases such as allergi

Clinical Features in Russian Patients with COVID-Associated Parosmia/Phanthosmia.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory dysfunction is a typical symptom of COVID-19 infection. While COVID-associated anosmia is well-described, knowledge of parosmia (olfactory distortions) and phanthosmia (olfactory hallucinations) is relatively lacking. We undertook a clinical study of the parosmia/phanthosmia phenotype, aiming to support improved prediction and management of these symptoms. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In a cross-sectional study between September 2020 and May 2021, we recruited 187 COVID-19 patients with parosmia/phanthosmia via social media and a matched healthy control group from neurologists.

Qualitative Olfactory Disorders: Patient Experiences and Self-Management.

BACKGROUND: Qualitative olfactory disorders in the form of parosmia and phantosmia are very subjective and cannot be measured at present. They pose an unpleasant experience for patients and a therapeutic challenge for clinicians. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterise the specific experiences of patients affected by the qualitative symptoms of parosmia and phantosmia including both triggers for symptoms and self-help measures they have tried. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey questionnaire was developed with the input of patient experts within the charity Fifth Sense. The survey was the

Topical inhibition of nasal carbonic anhydrase affects the CO2 detection threshold in rats.

Previous studies indicate that Long-Evans rats can be operantly trained to discriminate inspired CO(2) concentrations as low as 0.5%. This ability has been proposed to be due to the presence of CO(2)-sensitive olfactory receptors that contain the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA). The objectives of the present study were as follows: 1) to determine whether Zucker rats could be operantly conditioned to discriminate low concentrations of CO(2) from control air and 2) to determine the rats' CO(2) detection thresholds before and after nasal perfusion of mammalian Ringers or methazolamide, a CA inhibi

Differential Emergence and Stability of Sensory and Temporal Representations in Context-Specific Hippocampal Sequences.

Hippocampal spiking sequences encode external stimuli and spatiotemporal intervals, linking sequential experiences in memory, but the dynamics controlling the emergence and stability of such diverse representations remain unclear. Using two-photon calcium imaging in CA1 while mice performed an olfactory working-memory task, we recorded stimulus-specific sequences of "odor-cells" encoding olfactory stimuli followed by "time-cells" encoding time points in the ensuing delay. Odor-cells were reliably activated and retained stable fields during changes in trial structure and across days. Time-cells

Vitamin A-Containing Intranasal Drops Improve Odour Detection Threshold.

INTRODUCTION: Retinoic acid, a metabolite of vitamin A (VA), has been shown in animal work to support olfactory receptor neuron regeneration. A limited amount of clinical research has also demonstrated potential therapeutic benefit in patients with olfactory dysfunction (OD). We therefore performed, to our knowledge, the first prospective study investigating whether the intranasal VA-containing "Coldastop" is beneficial in treating patients with non-sinonasal OD. METHODS: A non-blinded prospective comparative study was performed, in patients with OD due to post-infectious, post-traumatic, and

Combining pleasant Olfactory and BRAin stimulations in treatment-resistant depression (COBRA): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia, including social, physical, and less-known, olfactory, stands as a core symptom of major depressive disorder (MDD). At the neurobiological level, anhedonia has been associated with abnormal activity within the reward system, suggesting a key role for dopamine. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) has emerged as an innovative treatment for alleviating depressive symptoms. Stimulation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has been shown to both improve anhedonia and induce dopamine release. Moreover, research suggests that the efficacy of rTMS is imp

Stability and flexibility of the message carried by semiochemical stimuli, as revealed by devaluation of carbon disulfide followed by social transmission of food preference.

Semiochemicals are volatile compounds that communicate specific meaning between individuals and elicit specific behavioral and/or physiological responses mediated by highly sensitive and highly specific olfactory pathways. Recent work suggests that semiochemicals can activate multiple olfactory pathways at once, but the degree to which parallel pathways activated by the same semiochemical interact and what the behavioral consequences of such interactions are remains a topic of debate. Here, we approached this question behaviorally, investigating whether rats could be trained to avoid carbon di
