Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a rare genetic condition that affects approximately 1 in every 20,000 - 50,000 live births. WBS children have specific skeletal deformities, dental malformations and rare lingual muscle dysfunction. The need for orthodontic and orthognathic therapy has arisen and has been considered a real clinical challenge even for experienced professionals, once it requires a complex and individualized treatment plan. This study reports a case of orthopedic expansion of the maxilla, in which a modified facial mask was used for protraction of the maxillary complex associated

This case report describes the treatment of a patient with a Class II malocclusion with an anterior open bite. The patient, a girl 16 years of age, had a significant anteroposterior discrepancy and a high-angle tendency. Her face was convex, with competent lips. Intraorally she had an anterior open bite of 3 mm, space in the mandibular arch, and an overjet of 2 mm. High-pull headgear, anterior intermaxillary elastics, and appropriate wire bending were used to close the bite and to correct the anteroposterior dental relationship. Modification of a tongue thrust habit helped to correct this sign

Tongue thrust usually develops in the presence of anterior open bite in order to achieve anterior valve function. In the literature, tongue thrust is described both as the result and the cause of open bite. If it is an adaptation to malocclusion, then tongue posture and deglutitive tongue movements should change after treatment. In this case report, an adult who had skeletal open bite and Class II malocclusion caused by mandibular retrusion was treated surgically. The mandible was advanced in a forward and upward direction with a sagittal split osteotomy. The open bite and Class II malocclusio

Cases such as this are a real challenge to clinical orthodontists. They require patience as well as proper diagnosis and treatment planning. The orthodontist must also help the patient psychologically by treating the teeth and surrounding structures and by treating the patient as an individual. It is the feeling of both the Author and the Plastic surgeon in this case, Dr. Fernando Ortiz Monasterio, that this type of surgery would be successful in most non-pathological macroglossia cases. It appears that the sutured areas might be said to develop more dense epithelial tissue, not allowing the t

Congenital muscular dystrophy (MD) is characterized by progressive muscle weakness. Such patients often present distinctive facial features characterized by excessive vertical growth due to increased muscle breakdown in the perioral muscles such as the masticatory and facial muscles, often resulting in skeletal open bite. Orthognathic treatment is one option for improving the maxillofacial morphology and malocclusion in such patients. However, it is often too risky to apply general anesthesia in such cases due to systemic myofunctional deterioration. Therefore, in many instances, the only opti

Anterior open bite (AOB) is a complex malocclusion prevalent in the mixed dentition, with multifactorial etiology involving skeletal, dental, and habitual components. Early intervention during this developmental stage is advocated to correct the malocclusion and guide growth, but the most effective and stable approaches remain debated. This systematic review aims to evaluate the efficacy of early orthodontic and orthopedic interventions for correcting AOB in the mixed dentition. A systematic search was conducted across four electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and ClinicalTria

Anterior open bite is a frequent occlusal disorder that affects chewing, swallowing, speech, tooth loss, and aesthetics. Persistent infantile swallowing is a major cause of occurrence and relapse of anterior open bite after treatment. This retrospective cohort study aimed to identify factors affecting postsurgical relapse. The study included 50 surgically treated patients aged 15 to 47 with over 3-mm anterior open bite who were followed up postsurgically for 6 months. Sixteen patients (32%) relapsed. Compared with the nonrelapsed group, the relapsed group was older (35.81 versus 24.26 y; P<0.0

Amelogenesis imperfecta refers to a group of hereditary diseases that affect dental enamel, often leading to a wide range of clinical manifestations and aesthetic concerns. This case report describes a female patient diagnosed with amelogenesis imperfecta associated with a skeletal open bite. The treatment approach was multidisciplinary. Periodontal therapy was initiated, followed by orthodontic treatment using brackets on temporary crowns to expand and coordinate the maxillary and mandibular arches. Subsequently, orthognathic surgery, including a LeFort I osteotomy and genioplasty, was perfor

Short root anomaly is a rare dental disorder affecting tooth root development. It is characterized by reduced root-to-crown ratios (1:1 or less) and rounded apices. The short roots introduce a potential complication during orthodontic treatment. This case report describes managing a girl with generalized short root anomaly, an open bite, impacted maxillary canines, and a bilateral crossbite. In the first phase of treatment, the maxillary canines were extracted, and the transverse discrepancy was corrected with a bone-borne transpalatal distractor. In the second phase of treatment, a mandibular

In the treatment of orthodontic patients with idiopathic condylar resorption, symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders and constantly changing occlusions caused by an instability of mandibular position make it difficult for orthodontists to confirm definitive orthodontic diagnosis and treatment plans. Therefore, these patients' temporomandibular joint (TMJ) structures need to be stabilized with splint therapy before active tooth movement to identify and maintain the true mandibular position. For some idiopathic condylar resorption patients, orthognathic surgery can cause further resorptio

INTRODUCTION: This single-center 2-arm parallel randomized clinical trial aimed to compare the dentoskeletal effects of bonded spurs combined with posterior build-ups vs conventional bonded spurs in the treatment of anterior open bite malocclusion in the mixed dentition.
METHODS: Patients aged from 7 to 11 years with anterior open bite, recruited at a university orthodontic clinic, were randomly allocated into 2 groups. The experimental group consisted of patients treated with bonded spurs combined with posterior build-ups. The comparison group comprised patients treated with conventional bon

Dogs are commonly kept as household pets, but sometimes pet dogs bite people. We report the case of a 69-year-old man who was bitten by his pet pit bull terrier. The dog bite resulted in multiple open wrist fractures and dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint, requiring surgical debridement, open reduction and internal fixation, and bone grafting. CT of the fractures showed that the dog's maxillary canine teeth had been deeply embedded in the hamate and second metacarpal bones, requiring that the dog's mouth be opened and the teeth disengaged in order to remove the injured limb from the do

A 29-year-old female patient with unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) of the left side presented with facial asymmetry, maxillary transverse occlusal plane (MXTOP) cant, posterior open bite, and Class III relationship. Treatment consisted of proportional condylectomy of the left condyle for management of UCH, and fixed orthodontic treatment with intrusion of the left maxillary molars to correct the MXTOP cant and remaining chin point deviation (CPD). Proportional condylectomy with a 14-mm resection of the left condylar head improved the CPD from 11.5 mm to 7.8 mm and resolved the posterior o

Dentofacial disharmony in patients with cerebral palsy (CP) can lead to low self-esteem and functional limitations. However, medical and behavioral challenges in patients with developmental disorders often prevent dental practitioners from offering the necessary treatment. This report describes the clinical interdisciplinary management of a 20-year-old man with CP, including orthodontic, periodontal, and orthognathic surgery therapy. The patient presented with the chief complaint of having difficulty chewing, was wheelchair dependent, had poor orofacial muscle control, and exhibited a Class II

An anterior open bite is a challenge to orthodontic treatment; it has a multifactorial etiology and a wide range of intervention options. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are a risk factor for the development of malocclusions such as the anterior open bite, especially in patients who have TMJ osteoarthritis with disc displacement. Articular disc repositioning surgery is an available option for treating this pathology, and it contributes to maintaining the condyles in a more stable position. The aim of this article was to report the case of a 20-year-old woman diagnosed with anterior ope
