Polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography and scleral collagen fiber orientation in osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a rare genetic connective tissue disorder, primarily arises from pathogenic variants affecting the production or structure of collagen type I. In addition to skeletal fragility, individuals with OI may face an increased risk of developing ophthalmic diseases. This association is believed to stem from the widespread presence of collagen type I throughout various parts of the eye. However, the precise consequences of abnormal collagen type I on different ocular tissues remain unknown. Of particular significance is the sclera, where collagen type I is abundant and cr

Bending-Sensitive Optical Waveguide Sensor With Carbon-Fiber Layer for Monitoring Grip Strength.

With the gradual popularity of wearable devices, the demand for high-performance flexible wearable sensors is also increasing. Flexible sensors based on the optical principle have advantages e.g. anti-electromagnetic interference, antiperspirant, inherent electrical safety, and the potential for biocompatibility. In this study, an optical waveguide sensor integrating a carbon fiber layer, fully constraining stretching deformation, partly constraining pressing deformation, and allowing bending deformation, was proposed. The sensitivity of the proposed sensor is three times higher than that of t

Difunctional Hydrogel Optical Fiber Fluorescence Sensor for Continuous and Simultaneous Monitoring of Glucose and pH.

It is significant for people with diabetes to know their body's real-time glucose level, which can guide the diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to research continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) as it gives us real-time information about our health condition and its dynamic changes. Here, we report a novel hydrogel optical fiber fluorescence sensor segmentally functionalized with fluorescein derivative and CdTe QDs/3-APBA, which can continuously monitor pH and glucose simultaneously. In the glucose detection section, the complexation of PBA and glucose will expand the local hydro

Light in the Larynx: a Miniaturized Robotic Optical Fiber for In-office Laser Surgery of the Vocal Folds.

This paper reports the design, construction, and experimental validation of a novel hand-held robot for in-office laser surgery of the vocal folds. In-office endoscopic laser surgery is an emerging trend in Laryngology: It promises to deliver the same patient outcomes of traditional surgical treatment (i.e., in the operating room), at a fraction of the cost. Unfortunately, office procedures can be challenging to perform; the optical fibers used for laser delivery can only emit light forward in a line-of-sight fashion, which severely limits anatomical access. The robot we present in this paper

Study of a Fiber Optic Fabry-Perot Strain Sensor for Fuel Assembly Strain Detection.

This paper proposes a fiber optic Fabry-Perot (F-P) strain sensing system using non-scan correlation demodulation applied to the health monitoring of the pressurized water reactor's fuel assembly structures. The structural design and sensing mechanism analysis of the sensor were carried out, and the strain transfer model from the fuel sheet to the strain gauge was established. After the sensor fabrication and installation, the static tests have been conducted, and the results indicate that the sensing system can accurately measure the microstrain with a sensitivity of up to 12.6 nm/με at a hig

Leukocoria in a 2-Year-Old Patient With Atypical Optic Nerve Fiber Layer Myelination.

Myelinated retinal nerve fiber layer is a benign retinal condition that is usually an incidental finding in a healthy patient. Visual acuity is typically not compromised, but some cases have other associated ocular conditions that can affect vision. Diagnosis in challenging atypical cases requires imaging studies to rule out other pathologies. The authors describe the case of a 2-year-old girl who presented with atypical optic nerve fiber myelination. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2020;57:e56-e58.].

Microstructured Optical Fiber-based Biosensors: Reversible and Nanoliter-Scale Measurement of Zinc Ions.

Sensing platforms that allow rapid and efficient detection of metal ions would have applications in disease diagnosis and study, as well as environmental sensing. Here, we report the first microstructured optical fiber-based biosensor for the reversible and nanoliter-scale measurement of metal ions. Specifically, a photoswitchable spiropyran Zn(2+) sensor is incorporated within the microenvironment of a liposome attached to microstructured optical fibers (exposed-core and suspended-core microstructured optical fibers). Both fiber-based platforms retains high selectivity of ion binding associat

Novel use of a fiber-optic-based on-line trichloroethylene sensor in a column retardation experiment.

A newly developed fiber-optic-based trichloroethylene (TCE) sensor previously described [F.P. Milanovich, S.B. Brown, B.W. Colston, Jr., P.F. Daley and K. Langry, Talanta, 41 (1994) 2189], was used to provide analyses of TCE in laboratory tests of retardation of TCE in ground water. The sensor enabled inexpensive real time analyses of TCE in retardation tests conducted in a sand-filled flow-through column. The simultaneous data analysis of TCE, (18)O and Cl(-) breakthrough curves enabled the calculation of an estimated retardation coefficient which was found to be in good agreement with that p

Application of a novel fiber-optic biosensor in situ to investigate the metabolic effect of lactate infusion.

Recently developed biosensor technology, which allows near real-time measurement in situ of gas tension (pCO2 and pO2) and of pH, was applied to arterial blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and brain parenchyma during intravenous lactate infusion in monkeys. Comparison of simultaneous biosensor measurements and discrete arterial blood sampling for traditional blood gas analyses indicated a high level of correlation for pCO2, pO2, and pH. Arterial pO2 and pH values were significantly higher and pCO2 significantly lower than corresponding CSF and brain parenchyma values at baseline, during and fol

Chronic human glaucoma causing selectively greater loss of large optic nerve fibers.

Eighteen eyes of 12 persons with chronically elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) were studied histologically to determine the number and diameter of optic nerve fibers. In some eyes, automated perimetry had been performed. Optic nerve fibers larger than the mean diameter were killed more rapidly than smaller fibers, although no fiber size was completely spared at any stage of atrophy. The number of optic nerve fibers varies considerably among normal eyes. The authors confirmed that the death of a substantial proportion of optic nerve fibers precedes detectable visual field loss.

Application of the optical Fourier transform for analysis of the spatial distribution of collagen fibers in normal and osteopetrotic bone tissue.

Optical Fourier analysis was applied for evaluation of the differences between normal and pathologically changed bone tissue. Collagen fibers were used as markers of bone structure. To prove the usefulness of this technique for objective mathematical analysis of these differences the spatial spatial distribution of collagen fiber bundles was evaluated in normal and osteopetrotic bone. The variation in the spatial distribution of collagen fiber bundles in cross sections of femur diaphyses was evaluated quantitatively by optical diffraction three groups of Fatty Orl-op strain rats, i.e. phenotyp
