Oral health and cardiovascular disease in Sweden.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to assess the relation between dental health and cardiovascular disease in an adult Swedish population. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A questionnaire was sent to 4811 randomly selected Swedes. It contained 52 questions about dental care habits, oral health, cardiovascular disease and their socio-economic situation. Odd ratios for all cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and the subgroup myocardial infarction, stroke and high blood pressure were calculated with a logistic regression model adjusted for age, gender, smoking, income, civil status and education. Nutrition: impact on oral and systemic health.

Good dietary practices and optimal nutritional status promote growth and tissue development, as well as feature prominently in the prevention of diseases. Malnutrition (particularly protein-energy malnutrition, which invariably involves concurrent deficiencies of the antioxidant micronutrients) promotes salivary gland hypofunction, impaired immunity, and an early shift in the oral microbial ecology toward a preponderance of anaerobic organisms. The immune suppression, which includes impaired cytokine function as well as diminished acute-phase response to infections, impacts negatively on the n

Oral health in children with renal disease.

Thirty-eight children (aged 2-16 years) attending a regional kidney unit had a full clinical and radiological dental examination. Twenty had previously undergone a renal transplant, 11 had chronic renal failure and 7 had other renal diseases. Periodontal disease was uncommon The presence of gingival hyperplasia (gum overgrowth), as recorded in 22 of the children, did not show any relationship with the use of immunosuppressant therapy. However, gingival overgrowth was so excessive in 2 patients that surgical removal was required. The prevalence of dental caries was low. Enamel defects were comm

Oral contraceptives and women's health in Japan.

Japan approved the use of low-dose oral contraceptives (OCs) in June 1999, after more than 35 years of debate. The debate leaves a legacy of misinformation about and various sources of resistance to OCs. Benefits are expected to include greater control for women over their fertility and a reduction in the high rates of unplanned pregnancies and abortions. Successful implementation of the new policy will require a new emphasis on women's health, including the provision of accurate information about OCs and their associated adverse effects, a women-centered approach to gynecological practice, an

Oral health care for the stroke survivor.

Despite a dramatic decrease in the incidence of stroke during the past decade, cerebrovascular accidents remain the third leading cause of death among the elderly. Stroke survivors, on the other hand, often demonstrate unique and challenging oral problems. This article delineates the etiology of cerebrovascular accidents, describes its orofacial manifestations in the stroke survivor, and offers guidelines for oral rehabilitation and management of affected individuals in the community or in an institutional setting.

An epidemiologic survey of oral health in Swaziland.

An epidemiologic survey of oral health was conducted on 480 schoolchildren and 400 adults in Swaziland. Age groups 7, 14, 20-24 and 35-44 were selected, and nine sampling sites were chosen in various parts of the country. Oral hygiene was generally poor, visible soft deposits being prevalent in all age groups and calculus in adults. Advanced periodontal disease was present in most people over 35 years of age, and intense gingivitis was widespread in all age groups. Dental caries was found to be a common problem, affecting practically every person, in many cases quite severely. There was a tend

Oral health of children in southern Sudan.

426 4- 17-year-old children (89% males) from the Jonglei Province and 50 12- and 15-year-old children from Juba town in Southern Sudan were examined according to WHO criteria (9). The prevalence of calculus and intense gingivitis was high, and highest at ages 8 and 9 years. 8% of 25-year-old children had advanced periodontal disease but this was confined to the anterior mandibular region. Caries prevalence was very low, but much higher in Juba town (36% at both age 12 and age 15 years) than in the Jonglei Province children (4% at 12 years and 8% at 15 years of age). Oral microbiota in cardiovascular health and disease.

Hundreds of microbial species inhabit the oral cavity and are essential to local and systemic health. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes a significant burden on global health, with its etiology and pathogenesis still not fully understood. Growing evidence indicates an association between the oral microbiome and CVD. However, the variability of populations, follow-up durations, and disease severity between various human investigations led to divergent conclusions. Animal studies have focused on the relationship between individual microbial species and CVD, yet gaps remain in the mechanisms bet

Role of Carvacrol in Oral Health: An Overview.

Oral diseases represent significant health challenges, with periodontal diseases and dental caries ranking as key preventable infectious diseases worldwide. Oral health affects overall quality of life, and inadequate oral hygiene is associated with chronic diseases. Carvacrol is a monoterpenoid phenol found in essential oils of pepperwort (Lepidium flavum), thyme (Thymus vulgaris), oregano (Origanum vulgare), wild bergamot (Citrus aurantium), and other plants. Carvacrol exhibits numerous biological activities, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer effects. Carvacrol demonstrated

Applications of chitosan in oral health and diseases.

Natural polysaccharides are polymers that are typically made up of over ten monosaccharides connected by glycosidic linkages. Because of their sustainability, renewability, biodegradability, and non-toxicity, natural polysaccharides and their derivatives have found extensive application in the food, pharmaceutical, medical and dental industries in recent years. Chitosan is one of the important members of the natural polysaccharide family with proven antimicrobial, biocompatibility, biodegradability, solubility and film-forming properties. These characteristics make chitosan an excellent candid

Oral Health of Children in Foster Care.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of dental disease among children in protective custody (eg, foster care) and associations with foster placement characteristics. We analyzed data from 778 patients ≥12 months of age who received oral health examinations by a pediatrician at a foster care clinic in a large urban setting, including 37 who were additionally examined by a dental resident. Examination findings were classified as routine, in need of urgent referral, or in need of emergent referral. Overall, 53% of children in protective custody had at least 1 abnormal dental

Oral streptococci: modulators of health and disease.

Streptococci are primary colonizers of the oral cavity where they are ubiquitously present and an integral part of the commensal oral biofilm microflora. The role oral streptococci play in the interaction with the host is ambivalent. On the one hand, they function as gatekeepers of homeostasis and are a prerequisite for the maintenance of oral health - they shape the oral microbiota, modulate the immune system to enable bacterial survival, and antagonize pathogenic species. On the other hand, also recognized pathogens, such as oral Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus, which trigger

Addressing the Oral Health Needs of Veterans.

The oral health needs of US veterans are an often overlooked aspect of their overall well-being. Veterans, especially those who have experienced military combat, face unique challenges, including the impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in their ability to access and receive dental care. Organizations like the Pacific Dental Services (PDS) Foundation, Veterans Legal Institute (VLI), and PDS Health are working to shed light on these challenges and discuss initiatives designed to improve oral healthcare for veterans.

The Importance of Nitrate Reduction for Oral Health.

Salivary glands concentrate plasma nitrate into saliva, leading to high nitrate concentrations that can reach the millimolar range after a nitrate-rich vegetable meal. Whereas human cells cannot reduce nitrate to nitrite effectively, certain oral bacteria can. This leads to an increase in systemic nitrite that can improve conditions such as hypertension and diabetes through nitric oxide availability. Apart from systemic benefits, it has been proposed that microbial nitrate reduction can also promote oral health. In this review, we discuss evidence associating dietary nitrate with oral health.

Oral health and functional capacity of centenarians.

The number of very old individuals, namely centenarians, is growing fast. In dentistry, the increasing number of older adults retaining natural teeth present new challenges for preventive and restorative dental care. However, there is a considerable lack of knowledge on the oral health status and needs in this exceptional age group. The aim of this population-based study was to identify the prevalence of oral diseases, therapeutic needs and functional capacity (evaluating centenarians' autonomy and their capabilities regarding treatment and oral hygiene) in centenarians. Subjects born before 1

Oral Jewelry and Piercing: Risks to Health.

What appears to be a decorative fad, pursued by people of all ages, is, for the most part, an invasion of the body by poorly trained individuals. Simple-to-complex, the insertion of body jewelry is embarked upon on a whim with little concern for health, including the possibility of infection. Many of those who opt for piercings have outcomes that are unremarkable and relatively trouble free. Others, less fortunate, end up with irreversible scars, serious infections, torn anatomic structures and teeth that are fractured, disfigured or have drifted out of line.
