Spatial distance and reactivity traits alter the positive perception of brushing by ewes.

Gentle handling seems to elicit positive states in sheep. The study investigated whether spatial distance alters sheep responses to brushing and whether spatial distance is influenced by reactivity. Twenty Romane ewes were assessed in three sessions: in Sessions 1 and 3, one grid separated the test animal from pen mates, with no distance between them, and in Session 2 two grids separated the test animal from pen mates by a distance of about 1.7 m. Ewes had been genetically selected for low (R-) or high (R+) behavioural reactivity to social isolation. Body postures, head orientation, ear postur

Thalamocortical network: a core structure for integrative multimodal vestibular functions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To apply the concept of nonreflexive sensorimotor and cognitive vestibular functions and disturbances to the current view of separate right and left thalamocortical systems. RECENT FINDINGS: The neuronal modules for sensorimotor and cognitive functions are organized in so-called provincial hubs with intracommunity connections that interact task-dependently via connector hubs. Thalamic subnuclei may serve not only as provincial hubs but also in higher order nuclei as connector hubs. Thus, in addition to its function as a cortical relay station of sensory input, the human tha

Homing pigeons develop local route stereotypy.

The mechanisms used by homing pigeons (Columba livia) to navigate homeward from distant sites have been well studied, yet the mechanisms underlying navigation within, and mapping of, the local familiar area have been largely neglected. In the local area pigeons pote ntially have access to a powerful navigational aid--a memorized landscape map. Current opinion suggests that landmarks are used only to recognize a familiar start position and that the goalward route is then achieved solely using compass orientation. We used high-resolution global positioning system (GPS) loggers to track homing pi

A study of orientation in a zero gravity environment by means of virtual reality simulation.

When the International Space Station (ISS) is completed and starts its operation, crew members will be stationed for three months or more in orbit aboard the ISS. As they stay longer in the space environment, "habitability" for them will become most important in the design of the interior space. One of the problems about habitability in a zero gravity (0 G) environment is disorientation. Crew members have difficulty in discriminating between "up" and "down" and more serious disorientations may cause space motion sickness. Crew members rely on visual perception to orient themselves because they

Detection of deep brain stimulation lead position and orientation in patients using magnetoencephalography.

OBJECTIVE: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) programming in patients with directional DBS requires precise lead position and orientation knowledge. Current computed tomography (CT)-based methods expose patients to radiation. This study investigates a non-radiation-based magnetic detection approach using magnetoencephalography (MEG) in four Parkinson's disease patients. METHODS: MEG recordings were performed under omnidirectional and directional electrode configurations. Three patients were measured with individualized head-casts to minimize head movement. Magnetic detection was applied to determin

Fused deep learning enables 6D single-molecule localization in polarization-resolved microscopy.

Single-molecule orientation localization microscopy (SMOLM) is an optical means to measure complex transport in charged and crowded conditions, such as inside cells or polymer materials. SMOLM extracts time- and space-dependent three-dimensional orientation information from dipole emitters. Achieving simultaneous position-orientation resolution with high photon efficiency remains a central challenge in SMOLM instrument design. We developed an optical fluorescence microscope that uses the double-helix point spread function (DHPSF) to localize dipole emitters in six dimensions (6D), delineated b

Collator units: second-stage orientational filters.

Which parts of an image belong to the other parts? This has become known as the 'binding problem' and is almost as resistant to explanation now as it was over half a century ago, when the purely descriptive Gestalt rule of 'good continuation' and the like were formulated. The specific case of interest here is that of spatially sampled fragments of a continuous but partly occluded line. First-stage orientated visual filters with relatively small receptive fields (such as simple cells) make precise but essentially local measurements of the orientational properties of line fragments within their

Describing What Surgeons See: Visual Orientation Strategies in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Across Imaging Conditions.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines how surgeons across different expertise levels describe their visual orientation strategies under white light and fluorescence imaging using indocyanine green (ICG) dye in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. DESIGN: In this cross-sectional observational study, participants viewed a series of laparoscopic cholecystectomy video clips under white light and fluorescence imaging with ICG dye. Participants then responded to open-ended questions regarding their viewing strategies. Responses were analyzed using latent content analysis to identify visual orientation primary an

[The motion sickness under reversing goggles (1st report)].

We observed locomotion and motion sickness in 10 normal adults wearing reversing goggles while moving outdoors. Horizontal reversal of the visual field produced moderate to severe ataxia and motion sickness in all subjects except one. There was marked variability in the sensitivity among different subjects. In contrast, vertical reversal produced no symptoms. Confusion of information relation to spatial orientation possibly caused both the motion sickness and abnormal locomotion. Horizontal reversal of visual information produces disorientation because visual information is equal in importance

A double dissociation between knowledge of object identity and object orientation.

Two patients are reported who demonstrate the independence of knowledge of object identity and object orientation. One patient, with a visuo-spatial disorder, was unable to identify the upright canonical orientation for line drawings of objects, although she could correctly name the objects. A second patient, with visual object agnosia, was unable to name many objects, but could provide the upright canonical orientation--even for objects that he could not name. This double dissociation suggests that information about the canonical upright orientation of objects may be derived both from stored

Incomplete binaural restoration in single-sided deafness treated with cochlear implants: insights from compensatory head-orienting behaviors.

INTRODUCTION: Single-sided deafness (SSD) disrupts binaural spatial hearing and may require active compensatory strategies, even for those with cochlear implants (CIs). This study examined spatial hearing adaptations in individuals with single-sided deafness (SSD), including those using cochlear implants (CIs) and unaided SSD, compared to normal-hearing (NH) controls. METHODS: Using a dual-task paradigm, participants performed both simple localization and complex multi-talker speech identification tasks, with continuous tracking of head-orientation dynamics to quantify re-orientations, respon

Fixational eye movements enable robust edge detection.

Human vision relies on mechanisms that respond to luminance edges in space and time. Most edge models use orientation-selective mechanisms on multiple spatial scales and operate on static inputs assuming that edge processing occurs within a single fixational instance. Recent studies, however, demonstrate functionally relevant temporal modulations of the sensory input due to fixational eye movements. Here we propose a spatiotemporal model of human edge detection that combines elements of spatial and active vision. The model augments a spatial vision model by temporal filtering and shifts the in

Cryogenic Far-Field Fluorescence Nanoscopy: Evaluation with DNA Origami.

Far-field fluorescence localization nanoscopy of individual fluorophores at a temperature of 1.8 K was demonstrated using DNA origami as a one-nanometer-accurate scaffold. Red and near-infrared fluorophores were modified to the scaffold, and the fluorophores were 11 or 77 nm apart. We performed the localization nanoscopy of these two fluorophores at 1.8 K with a far-field fluorescence microscope. Under the cryogenic conditions, the fluorophores were perfectly immobilized and their photobleaching was drastically suppressed; consequently, the lateral spatial precision (a measure of reproducibili

Pathological tau alters head direction signaling and induces spatial disorientation.

Spatial disorientation, an early symptom of dementia, is emerging as an early and reliable cognitive biomarker predicting future memory problems associated with Alzheimer's disease, but the underlying neural mechanisms have yet to be fully defined. The anterodorsal thalamic nucleus (ADn) exhibits early and selective vulnerability to pathological misfolded forms of tau, a major hallmark of Alzheimer's disease and ageing. The ADn contains a high density of head direction (HD) cells, which contribute to spatial navigation and orientation. Hence, their disruption may contribute to spatial disorien

Enhanced Spatial Mapping of Mouse Gastric Muscle Layers Using a Modified Swiss Roll Technique.

Spatial "omics" technologies provide unprecedented opportunities to study the biology and interactions of individual cells of the gastric neuromuscular apparatus in their native tissue environment. However, the successful application of these approaches and the assessment of structural and molecular differences across the fundus, corpus, and antrum require consistent sampling and tissue orientation. Here, we report a modified "Swiss roll" technique tailored to the mouse stomach, which allows all major anatomical regions to be embedded and visualized in a single cryosection. This approach empha

Collective ring formation in active matter.

We study the formation of ring-like structures in interacting active particle systems in two dimensions. The emergent structure shows signatures of both spatial and orientational organization. The spatial organization is characterized by the radial distance of a tagged particle from the centroid of the assembly, while orientational organization is characterized by the radial alignment of its self-propulsion direction. We derive exact analytical expressions for the radial and polarization distributions for systems of active Brownian particles and run-and-tumble particles. While both models exhi

OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's disease (PD) may affect not only motor functions, but also cognitive processes such as attention. While past research has examined PD impact on spatial attention, it has not addressed how the key functions of attentional orienting and alerting in PD are mediated by cueing format, an ecologically relevant parameter. We assessed how exogenous and endogenous orienting cue modes affect PD patients' visuospatial attention expressed as dorsal attention network orienting benefits, ventral attention network reorienting costs, and alerting abilities.
