Strategies to Increase the Spanish-Speaking Workforce in Orthopaedic Surgery within the United States.

Language-concordant care improves patient satisfaction. Given the increase in Spanish-speaking persons requiring orthopaedic care in the United States, it is essential to increase the Spanish-speaking workforce in orthopaedic surgery. We have proposed strategies to improve the proportion of Spanish-speaking orthopaedic surgeons in the U.S. through early exposure to orthopaedic surgery, by creating collaborative advancement and mentorship opportunities, by endorsing Spanish-language immersion opportunities, and by increasing workforce diversity awareness. Furthermore, we have suggested a strate

Clinical Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Fragility Fractures of the Pelvis.

BACKGROUND: Fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFPs) are osteoporotic pelvic fractures or insufficiency pelvic fractures caused by the low energy injury or stress fracture in daily livings in the elderly more than 60 years, which the incidence is increasing with the aging population in our country. FFPs result in considerable morbidity and mortality and as well as massive financial burden on the already strained health systems throughout the world. METHODS: This clinical guideline was initiated by the Trauma Orthopedic Branch of Chinese Orthopedic Association; the External Fixation and Limb R

Sustained Improvement in Quality of Patient Handoffs After Orthopaedic Surgery I-PASS Intervention.

PURPOSE: The I-PASS tool has been shown to decrease medical errors in patient handoffs in nonorthopaedic surgery fields. We prospectively studied the implementation of a version of this handoff tool modified for orthopaedic surgery patients in an academic practice at two level I trauma centers. METHODS: This was a prospective study of a multicenter handoff improvement program. Handoffs were evaluated preintervention and at 1, 6, 9, and 18 months postintervention for key data elements defined by I-PASS. Rates of adverse clinical outcomes were compared before and after the handoff intervention.

The Impact of Orthopaedic Surgical Training on Body Composition.

BACKGROUND: Residency is known to consist of rigorous training that has contributed to increased rates of resident burn out, depression, and suicide. There have been recent efforts to attempt to combat and solve the rising levels of mental health concerns amongst physicians and physicians in training. While studies have examined the adverse effects of medical training on mental health, few have examined the associated changes in physical health. This study aimed to identify and compare baseline body composition and hand grip strength of orthopaedic surgery residents. The second aim was to iden

National Referral Prioritization tool for first specialist assessment: results of a pilot study in orthopaedic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Most public hospitals are receiving more referrals for first specialist assessment than they have capacity to see. Traditional priority categories are too broad for effective discrimination. In New Zealand (NZ) explicit prioritization is required by legislation and supported by the Medical Council of NZ. A new generic National Referral Prioritization tool (NRPT) has been developed which includes a patient impact on life score. This study reports its trial implementation in orthopaedic surgery in a single centre. METHODS: Four months of referrals to the orthopaedic department were

The Classification of Swanson for Congenital Anomalies of Upper Limb Modified by the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Hand (JSSH).

The aim of this study is to introduce the classification of Swanson for congenital anomalies of upper limb modified by the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Hand (the JSSH modification) in English. The Swanson classification has been widely accepted by most hand surgeons. However, several authors have suggested that complex cases, particularly those involving the complex spectrum of cleft hand and symbrachydactyly, are difficult to classify into the classification schemes. In the JSSH modification, brachysyndactyly, so-called atypical cleft hand and transverse deficiency are included under t

From Iraq back to Iraq: modern combat orthopaedic care.

War wounds are often large and complex, with high degrees of contamination and tissue loss differing significantly from typical civilian injuries. Infection has been a common complication driving the tenets of care, even in the antibiotic age. Fractures were historically treated with casting or traction because of the risk of infection with internal fixation. However, current civilian fracture care has evolved significantly with extensive use of internal and external fixation with early mobilization and other adjuncts to restore function earlier and more completely. Whether the application of

Microbiological Profile and Outcome of Surgical Site Infections Following Orthopedic Surgeries in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) are one of the most common adverse events that occur in hospitalized patients undergoing surgical procedures or in outpatient surgical measures, regardless of the advances in preventive procedures. SSI may lead to disastrous consequences in orthopedic practice as it may involve the joints and bones and is extremely difficult to get rid of the infection. The present study was designed to evaluate the rates, risk factors, microbiological profiles, and outcomes of SSIs following orthopedic procedures in patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital in Eastern India

Unexpected angular or rotational deformity after corrective osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Codman's paradox reveals a misunderstanding of geometry in orthopedic practice. Physicians often encounter situations that cannot be understood intuitively during orthopedic interventions such as corrective osteotomy. Occasionally, unexpected angular or rotational deformity occurs during surgery. This study aimed to draw the attention of orthopedic surgeons toward the concepts of orientation and rotation and demonstrate the potential for unexpected deformity after orthopedic interventions. This study focused on three situations: shoulder arthrodesis, femoral varization derotational

Quantitative Sensory Testing Following Orthopedic Trauma: A Longitudinal Multisite Feasibility Study.

OBJECTIVES: Orthopedic trauma is a major cause of disability worldwide; around half of the people who sustain orthopedic trauma develop chronic pain. Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) is a standardized method of assessing pain sensitivity, which may be useful in characterizing pain after injury and predicting chronic pain. This primary aim of this project was to test the feasibility of a portable QST battery, administered to adults 6-weeks post major orthopedic trauma and surgery. METHODS: Twenty-nine participants (62% male; 52% black) who sustained major orthopedic trauma and surgery comple

Differences in the Treatment of Distal Radius Fractures by Hand Fellowship Trained Surgeons: A Study of ABOS Candidate Data.

PURPOSE: The management of distal radius fractures differs based on the nature of the fracture and the experience of the surgeon. We hypothesized that patients requiring surgical intervention would undergo different procedures when in the care of a surgeon with subspecialty training in hand surgery as compared with surgeons with no subspecialty training in hand surgery. METHODS: We queried the ABOS database for case log information submitted for part II of the ABOS examination. Queries for all codes involved with distal radius fracture management were combined with associated codes for the ma

The hidden toll of war: a comprehensive study of orthopedic injuries in Yemen.

BACKGROUND: Yemen has been experiencing a protracted civil war and humanitarian crisis since 2015, which has resulted in many war-related injuries. However, there is a lack of data on the epidemiology, characteristics, and outcomes of these injuries, especially the orthopedic ones. This study aimed to describe the war-related orthopedic injuries in Yemen and their impact on the patients' health and function. METHODS: This was a retrospective study based on medical records and trauma registries of 3930 patients who were admitted to three major trauma centers in Sana'a city with war-related ort

From Accuracy to Adoption: A Clinical Readiness Framework for Artificial Intelligence in Orthopaedic Surgery (OSCAR).

Technical performance alone does not establish clinical readiness; strong accuracy or discrimination does not demonstrate that an artificial intelligence (AI) tool will generalize, improve clinical care, or remain safe after deployment. Existing AI frameworks provide important guidance for reporting, risk of bias, model evaluation, and clinical trials, but they do not provide a single longitudinal stage describing a technology's progression from development through monitored clinical deployment. We propose the Orthopaedic Surgery Clinical AI Readiness (OSCAR) scale as a 6-stage conceptual fram
