Menière's disease. II. A neuropsychological study.

23 Menière patients were examined with a extensive battery of neuro-psychological tests. In a previous investigation, the authors had demonstrated that patients with long-duration Menière's disease had psychological disturbances, presumably localized in the nondominant hemisphere. In the present investigation, the patients had short-duration Menière's disease, and we were unable to replicate the results of the former investigation. It is concluded that the central changes in nondominant hemisphere function develop over a long period of time. It is hoped for that further neuropsychological inve

The activation of thematic semantic relation representations is intrusive but modulated by thematic association strength: evidence from the Think/No-Think paradigm.

This study adopts the Think/No-Think (TNT) paradigm for the first time to examine whether activation of thematic semantic relation representations is intrusive. In Experiment 1, during the learning phase, participants memorized cue–target word pairs, with half being thematically related and the other half taxonomically related. In the Think/No-Think phase, both relation types were equally distributed across the Think, No-Think, and baseline conditions. In the Think condition, participants retrieved the target words, while in the No-Think condition, they suppressed the target words and reported

The effects of FG7142 on overexpectation of Pavlovian fear conditioning.

Six experiments studied the role of GABA-sub(A) receptor activation in expression of overexpectation of Pavlovian fear conditioning. After separate pairings of CSA and CSB with shock in Stage I, rats received pairings of the compound AB with shock in Stage II, producing overexpectation of fear. The expression of overexpectation was attenuated, in a dose-dependent manner, by the benzodiazepine partial inverse agonist FG7142. FG7142 had no effect on responding to a CS paired with a low magnitude US or a CS subjected to associative blocking. These results suggest that the negative prediction erro

Control over interfering memories in eating disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have suggested that patients suffering from either anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) exhibit abnormal performance in the ability to control cognitive interference in response selection. METHOD: We assessed the status of cognitive control in episodic memory by addressing the ability to inhibit interfering memories. To this end, we used the retrieval-practice paradigm, which allows for measuring both the beneficial and the detrimental effects of memory practice. The latter phenomenon, known as retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF), is thought to reflect an

The role of rumination, attentional biases and stress in psychological distress.

This experimental study examines the relationship between rumination and attentional bias. Additionally, the study aims to determine, within a diathesis-stress framework, whether rumination or attentional bias (or both) can prospectively predict psychological distress. Eighty-one participants completed selected measures of rumination and psychological distress at time one, in addition to experimental manipulations of rumination and mood, and measures of mood and attentional bias at time two. Seventy-three participants (90% follow-up) completed final measures of stress and psychological distres

Memory consolidation in human sleep depends on inhibition of glucocorticoid release.

Early sleep dominated by slow-wave sleep has been found to be particularly relevant for declarative memory formation via hippocampo-neocortical networks. Concurrently, early nocturnal sleep is characterized by an inhibition of glucocorticoid release from the adrenals. Here, we show in healthy humans that this inhibition serves to support declarative memory consolidation during sleep. Elevating plasma glucocorticoid concentration during early sleep by administration of cortisol impaired consolidation of paired associate words, but not of non-declarative memory of visuomotor skills. Since glucoc

A placebo-controlled evaluation of vasopressin for ECT-induced memory impairment.

Vasopressin may be involved in normal memory functions and may alleviate certain memory impairments. In this study, the usefulness of vasopressin to relieve electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)-induced memory impairment was evaluated using a placebo-controlled, random assignment, double-blind design. Patients were 33 depressives receiving bilateral ECT. Vasopressin, in a nasal spray, was administered q.i.d. from the first through the fifth ECT. Extensive memory testing evaluated both retrograde and anterograde amnesia; ratings of depression and patient ratings of subjective memory complaints were a

Pairing extinction training with vagus nerve stimulation reduces drug-seeking by altering activity in afferents to the medial prefrontal cortex.

INTRODUCTION: Relapse triggered by drug-associated cues remains a major challenge in treating substance use disorders, as extinction learning is often weak and context dependent. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) enhances learning-related plasticity and, when paired with extinction training, reduces cue-induced reinstatement of cocaine seeking; however, the underlying circuit mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: We examined how VNS paired with extinction reshapes medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) networks that regulate drug seeking, focusing on afferent inputs from the anterior (aPVT) and posterior

Genetic architecture of learning and delayed recall: a twin study of episodic memory.

OBJECTIVE: Although episodic memory is often conceptualized as consisting of multiple component processes, there is a lack of understanding as to whether these processes are influenced by the same or different genetic determinants. The aim of the present study was to utilize multivariate twin analyses to elucidate the degree to which learning and delayed recall, two critical measures of episodic memory performance, have common or different genetic and environmental influences. METHOD: Participants from the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging (314 monozygotic twin pairs, 259 dizygotic twin pairs,

Memory out of context: Spacing effects and decontextualization in a computational model of the medial temporal lobe.

Some neural representations gradually change across multiple timescales. Here we argue that modeling this "drift" could help explain the spacing effect (the long-term benefit of distributed learning), whereby differences between stored and current temporal context activity patterns produce greater error-driven learning. We trained a neurobiologically realistic model of the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus to learn paired associates alongside temporal context vectors that drifted between learning episodes and/or before final retention intervals. In line with spacing effects, greater drift led

Comparison of memory skills in learning disabled, low-reading, and nondisabled adolescents.

Concerns are raised regarding the samples used in studies of learning disabled children. In this study, subjects were 56 high school students; 10 exhibited perceptual or processing difficulties ("learning disabled"), 15 performed poorly on reading achievement tests ("low readers"), and 31 showed no scholastic problems ("nondisabled"). Scores of the three groups were compared on nine memory tasks involving either auditory or visual input and encompassing a wide variety of content (digits, pictures, related and unrelated words, paired-associates, or sentences). The nondisabled group performed si

Erythritol, sucrose, and sucralose elicit similar reward responses after flavor preference learning in healthy humans.

Utilizing artificial low-caloric sweeteners as sugar alternatives remains controversial, as they provide sweet taste and the associated rewarding responses but fail to stimulate satiation. Erythritol, a non-caloric bulk sweetener, is able to stimulate the release of gastrointestinal (GI) satiation hormones, yet its influence on reward responses is inconclusive. The aim of this study was to investigate reward responses to erythritol, sucrose, and sucralose during and after flavor preference learning, and to explore the potential involvement of GI satiation hormones. In this randomized, double-b

Further consideration of the learning impairment after aceperone in the marmoset: effects of the drug on shape and colour discrimination and on an alternation task.

Ten marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) learned to discriminate between pairs of small grey objects differing only in shape or small plain plaques differing only in colour, in a Wisconsin General Test Apparatus. Each day, each animal was presented with three consecutive visual discrimination problems in the order shape-colour-shape or colour-shape-colour. After aceperone, an alpha-noradrenergic antagonist, animals were impaired at learning the first but not the subsequent tasks of each trio. These results suggest that the previously observed impairment [10] on the first of a pair of object discrimi

Contextual effects in sensorimotor adaptation adhere to associative learning rules.

Traditional associative learning tasks focus on the formation of associations between salient events and arbitrary stimuli that predict those events. This is exemplified in cerebellar-dependent delay eyeblink conditioning, where arbitrary cues such as a tone or light act as conditioned stimuli (CSs) that predict aversive sensations at the cornea (unconditioned stimulus [US]). Here, we ask if a similar framework could be applied to another type of cerebellar-dependent sensorimotor learning - sensorimotor adaptation. Models of sensorimotor adaptation posit that the introduction of an environment

Stimulating prefrontal cortex facilitates training transfer by increasing representational overlap.

A recent hypothesis characterizes difficulties in multitasking as being the price humans pay for our ability to generalize learning across tasks. The mitigation of these costs through training has been associated with reduced overlap of constituent task representations within frontal, parietal, and subcortical regions. Transcranial direct current stimulation, which can modulate functional brain activity, has shown promise in generalizing performance gains when combined with multitasking training. However, the relationship between combined transcranial direct current stimulation and training pr

Neural and Endocrine Correlates of Extinction of Conditioned Sexual Incentive Salience in Male Rats.

Conditioned sexual arousal (CSA) can develop when initially neutral social cues acquire sexual incentive value through associative learning. In male rats, pairing the D2-type receptor agonist quinpirole (QNP) with cohabitation with an almond-scented juvenile male induces a conditioned sexual response toward that stimulus. Here, we examined how this response changes following repeated nonreinforced exposure to the conditioned social cue. Adult male rats underwent three conditioning trials followed, in the extinction-training groups, by three additional drug-free exposures to the almond-scented

Impaired sleep-related consolidation of declarative memories in idiopathic focal epilepsies of childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Declarative memory is consolidated during sleep in healthy children. We tested the hypothesis that consolidation processes are impaired in idiopathic focal epilepsies (IFE) of childhood in association with frequent interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) during sleep. METHODS: A verbal (word-pair association) and a nonverbal (2D object location) declarative memory task were administrated to 15 children with IFEs and 8 control children 6-12 years of age. Patients had either centrotemporal (11 patients) or occipital (4 patients) IEDs. All but 3 patients had a history of unprovoked

Progressively analogous evidence of covert face recognition from functional magnetic resonance imaging and skin conductance responses studies involving a patient with dissociative amnesia.

This is a case study involving a female patient (NN) with complete loss of autobiographical memory and identity despite normal neurological assessment. To test the hypothesis that patients with dissociative amnesia (DA) possess the ability to covertly process facial identities they are unaware of, we conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and assessed skin conductance responses (SCR) to (a) strangers, (b) celebrities, and (c) familiar faces not seen since the onset of DA. We also performed associative face-name memory tasks to test the patient's ability to learn and recall newl

The central amygdala recruits mesocorticolimbic circuitry for pursuit of reward or pain.

How do brain mechanisms create maladaptive attractions? Here intense maladaptive attractions are created in laboratory rats by pairing optogenetic channelrhodopsin (ChR2) stimulation of central nucleus of amygdala (CeA) in rats with encountering either sucrose, cocaine, or a painful shock-delivering object. We find that pairings make the respective rats pursue either sucrose exclusively, or cocaine exclusively, or repeatedly self-inflict shocks. CeA-induced maladaptive attractions, even to the painful shock-rod, recruit mesocorticolimbic incentive-related circuitry. Shock-associated cues also

Coordinated yet asymmetric striatal neuromodulatory dynamics encode associative learning.

The striatum integrates dopamine and acetylcholine to support learning and behavioral flexibility, yet how these neuromodulators coordinate during associative learning remains unclear. Using longitudinal dual-color fiber photometry in mice, we simultaneously tracked both signals in the anterior dorsolateral striatum throughout Pavlovian conditioning. We find that learning recruits distinct forms of neuromodulatory plasticity: dopamine maintains rapid, contingency-dependent cue responses, whereas acetylcholine undergoes broader reorganization across training. Despite these differences, trial-by
