Empowering the poor: A field study of the social psychological consequences of receiving autonomy or dependency aid in Panama.

This field study investigated the consequences of receiving poverty aid through conditional transfer programmes in the form of autonomy-oriented help (i.e., cash) or dependency-oriented help (i.e., vouchers) in impoverished rural communities in Panama. The empowering effects of autonomy- (vs. dependency-) help have so far only been studied in laboratory settings, or in settings where help could easily be refused. Little is known about the reactions of people who rely on help for extended periods of time. This study provides insights into how aid recipients are influenced by the type of aid the

Nature's agents or agents of empire? Entomological workers and environmental change during the construction of the Panama Canal.

This essay examines the role that entomological workers played in U.S. public health efforts during the construction of the Panama Canal (1904-1914). Entomological workers were critical to mosquito control efforts aimed at the reduction of tropical fevers such as malaria. But in the process of studying vector mosquitoes, they discovered that many of the conditions that produced mosquitoes were not intrinsic to tropical nature per se but resulted from the human-caused environmental disturbances that accompanied canal building. This realization did not mesh well with an American ideology of trop

[Hepatic polycystic hydatidosis. Clinical and histopathologic report of the second native case of echinococcosis in the Republic of Panama].

The second autochthonous case of hepatic hydatidosos by Echinococcus vogelli is reported for the Republic of Panama. The patient was a 8 year old female living in the Province of Colon (Maria Chiquita). She claimed never to have traveled outside panamanian territory. The multichambered cysts with fertile, numerous protoscolices were identified from biopsied material obtained after exploratory laparotomy at Manuel Amador Hospital in Colon (Republic of Panama). The cyst appeared multiloculated mostly affecting the left lobe of the liver, beside a cystic lesion on the right lobe. The large rostel

Regional distribution of human papillomavirus DNA and other risk factors for invasive cervical cancer in Panama.

A population-based national cancer registry has documented strikingly different regional incidence rates of cervical cancer in the Republic of Panama. Such regional differences in disease rates could represent regional differences in the occurrence of risk factors, in particular, human genital papillomaviruses (HPV). This study enrolled newly diagnosed invasive cancer patients in the Republic of Panama over an 18-mo period. Behavioral risk factors were measured by interviewing cases and matched controls. In addition, DNA extracted from biopsies of the cancers was tested for HPV sequences. Earl

Encephalitic alphavirus infection induces long-term humoral and cell-mediated responses in seropositive participants from Panama.

Encephalitic alphaviruses are an emerging viral threat with a history of large-scale outbreaks. Evaluating the immune response to natural infection in survivors is critical to the rational development of medical countermeasures (MCM), and yet little is known thus far. Here, we describe a comprehensive analysis of adaptive immune responses from a cohort of 37 convalescent seropositive individuals of Venezuelan equine encephalitis and/or Madariaga virus from Panama. We demonstrate persistent and polyfunctional B cell responses, as well as memory T cell cytokine production in response to viral an

Climate change and flood susceptibility in Bocas del Toro, Panama: A multi-criteria spatial analysis approach.

Though Bocas del Toro province lies in the Panamanian Caribbean region regarded as "ground zero" in the global climate emergency, responses to frequent inland flooding remain reactive due to the lack of a comprehensive flood hazard map. This study integrated publicly available spatial data with elicitation from regionally-specific subject matter experts to map present and future flood prone zones in the province using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Weighted Sum tool, based on the shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP). Rainfall and temperature data were analyzed to predict future floo

Antimalarial compounds exhibit variant- and cell-type-specific activity against SARS-CoV-2 isolated in Panama.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates the antiviral activity of antimalarial compounds against SARS-CoV-2 variants isolated in Panama (2020-2022). METHODS: For this purpose, we conducted a series of in vitro assays in two host mammalian cell systems, Vero-E6 and Calu-3 cells, to assess the antiviral activity of twenty-six antimalarials and antiviral compounds against the Delta and A2.5 variants. RESULTS: In the initial screening using Vero-E6 cells, with an antiviral inhibition threshold of ≥20% and cell viability of ≥80%, chloroquine (CQ) significantly inhibited the Delta variant. Meanwhile, amo

Multidrug-Resistant Phenotypes and Resistance Gene Profiles of Escherichia coli Isolated from Healthy Calves in Panama.

The presence of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli strains in healthy cattle represents a major threat to public health because they can act as a reservoir of resistance genes. Little is known about the antimicrobial susceptibility profile and genetic characteristics of E. coli strains isolated from healthy calves in Panama and Central America. We conducted a cross-sectional study evaluating isolates from healthy calves in Panama. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined against 15 antibiotics, and strains were classified as resistant, intermediate, or susceptible. 120 E. coli isolates we

Real-time polymerase chain reaction diagnosis of leishmaniasis in Panama from both fresh and frozen tissue.

Skin biopsies stored in ethanol from 49 patients with suspected cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) were tested in a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and compared with conventional diagnostic methods. With clinical diagnosis as the gold standard, PCR had a sensitivity of 96% (47/49) vs. 61% (30/49) for histopathology and 33% (16/49) for culture. In addition, DNA was extracted from 70 frozen smears of lesions from suspected cases of CL and tested with the same assay. In these samples, the PCR had a sensitivity of 61% (43/70) vs. 56% (39/70) for histopathology and 41% (29/70) for culture

Development of Alouattamyia baeri (Diptera: Oestridae) from howler monkeys (Primates: Cebidae) on Barro Colorado Island, Panama.

The fecundity and development of larval stages of the cuterebrid bot fly A. baeri were studied in an unusual host, remotely related to the primary host. Third-instar Alouattamyia baeri (Shannon & Greene) removed from howler monkeys, Alouatta palliata, were allowed to pupate and then were cultured under controlled conditions. Eclosion occurred after 37.9 +/- 0.4 (mean +/- SE) (male) and 38.2 +/- 0.4 (female) d at 26 degrees C. Five-day-old females were mated using a tethered flight technique and oviposited on ridged filter paper. The total egg complement was 1,399 +/- 243 (n = 2) eggs per femal

Genome-wide discovery and development of polymorphic microsatellites from Leishmania panamensis parasites circulating in central Panama.

BACKGROUND: The parasite Leishmania panamensis is the main cause of leishmaniasis in Panama. The disease is largely uncontrolled, with a rising incidence and no appropriate control measures. While microsatellites are considered some of the best genetic markers to study population genetics and molecular epidemiology in these and other parasites, none has been developed for L. panamensis. FINDINGS: Here we have developed and tested a new panel of microsatellites for this species, based on high-throughput genome-wide screening. The new set of microsatellites is composed of seventeen loci, mainly

Molecular Detection of Leishmania (V.) braziliensis and Leishmania (M.) martiniquensis Infecting Domestic Animals from Panama, Central America.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a vector-borne zoonotic disease affecting the skin and mucous membranes of animals and humans. While CL is commonly diagnosed and studied in humans in Panama, limited information exists on its occurrence in domestic animals and their potential role as reservoirs. In this study, samples from twelve domestic animals (ten dogs and two horses) with suspected CL lesions were collected between 2021 and 2025 in endemic regions of Panama and evaluated using multiple diagnostic methods. Leishmania infection was confirmed in six of them (50%): five dogs and one horse. Thr

Venomics of Scorpion Ananteris platnicki (Lourenço, 1993), a New World Buthid That Inhabits Costa Rica and Panama.

Ananteris is a scorpion genus that inhabits dry and seasonal areas of South and Central America. It is located in a distinctive morpho-group of Buthids, the 'Ananteris group', which also includes species distributed in the Old World. Because of the lack of information on venom composition, the study of Ananteris species could have biological and medical relevance. We conducted a venomics analysis of Ananteris platnicki, a tiny scorpion that inhabits Panama and Costa Rica, which shows the presence of putative toxins targeting ion channels, as well as proteins with similarity to hyaluronidases,

Isolation and genetic characterization of a relapsing fever spirochete isolated from Ornithodoros puertoricensis collected in central Panama.

Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) spirochetes are likely an overlooked cause of disease in Latin America. In Panama, the pathogens were first reported to cause human disease in the early 1900s. Recent collections of Ornithodoros puertoricensis from human dwellings in Panama prompted our interest to determine whether spirochetes still circulate in the country. Ornithodoros puertoricensis ticks were collected at field sites around the City of Panama. In the laboratory, the ticks were determined to be infected with TBRF spirochetes by transmission to mice, and we report the laboratory isolation a

New records of Ornithodoros puertoricensis Fox 1947 (Ixodida: Argasidae) parasitizing humans in rural and urban dwellings, Panama.

The presence of ticks inside human constructions was evaluated in two localities from Colon province (Charco La Piedra and Espinar) and one from Panama province (Ancon, City of Panama). In two of houses, eight people from Charco La Piedra and one from Ancón reported "insect bites," which produced blisters for several weeks. The investigation resulted in the collection of argasid ticks, which were identified by morphology and sequencing the 16s ribosomal RNA gene, and later evaluated for the presence of relapsing fever Borrelia DNA. All ticks were identified as Ornithodoros puertoricensis. Whil
