Brain lesions are known to affect cognition, emotions, and behavior, and have been implicated in cases of violence, particularly when involving neural circuits responsible for impulse control, emotional regulation, and judgment. While tumors, traumatic brain injuries, vascular abnormalities, and other types of brain lesions have been associated with psychiatric and behavioral disturbances, cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) have rarely been linked to psychosis and not with homicidal violence. We present the case of a 14-year-old boy with a large inoperable left parieto-occipital arter

As many World War II and Korean Conflict veterans suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) grow older, increasing numbers will be diagnosed with dementia. We retrospectively analyzed patients with dementia, comparing the behavioral disturbances of those with PTSD to those without PTSD. We hypothesized that due to the additive effect of the neurobiological and behavioral changes associated with PTSD and dementia, the dementia with PTSD group would show more agitation and disinhibition than the dementia without PTSD group. Sixteen patients with diagnoses of dementia and PTSD were matc

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by a long-term pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, unstable self-image, marked impulsivity, and/or affective instability. In addition, these features can be evidenced by efforts to avoid real or feared abandonment, chronic feelings of emptiness, mood reactivity, recurrent self-injurious or suicidal behavior, other impulsive behaviors with potential for self-damaging effects, intense anger or difficulty with anger control, and transient paranoid ideation or stress-related dissociative symptoms. BPD is associated with subs

Stalking perpetrators may suffer from maladaptive personality traits, particularly if they stalk in the context of an (ex-)intimate relationship. To date, no study has examined how different personality attributions may relate to stalker motivation, or the behaviors they engage in, and how this differs across victim-perpetrator relationships. Further, the perspective of the victim is often not taken into consideration, even though most stalking victims know their stalker intimately and a majority are stalked by a former or current partner. The present study employed a correlational design to a

Although multiple myeloma (MM) can cause various neurological complications, direct central nervous system (CNS) involvement is exceedingly uncommon and poorly understood. There has been one other reported case in the literature of a patient presenting with psychosis prior to diagnosis of MM. We present a case of a 58-year-old female with no history of psychiatric illness who presented to a behavioral health inpatient unit with paranoid delusions, multisensory hallucinations, and disorganized behavior in the days preceding her MM diagnosis. Due to hypercalcemia and altered mental status, she w

The atypical antipsychotic, clozapine, has been reported to reduce smoking in schizophrenic patients. We sought to determine whether other atypical antipsychotics would also be associated with a decreased prevalence of smoking in this population. Data were obtained from three groups of chronic, hospitalized, schizophrenic patients, receiving either a typical antipsychotic (n=15), clozapine (n=6), or another atypical antipsychotic (n=18). In addition to smoking prevalence, the groups were compared with regard to demographics (age, education), medication (doses, duration of treatment, side-effec

INTRODUCTION: The effective management of depression, anxiety, and other forms of psychological distress depends on individuals' readiness to seek and accept help for their mental suffering. Understanding which personality traits relate to help-seeking can help better tailor mental healthcare to individual needs. However, findings regarding associations of personality traits with help-seeking have been inconsistent.
METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis focused on English-language research studies on the association of personality (encompassing personality disorders, Five Factor -

Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) offers a radically behavioral and transdiagnostic conception of the formation of the "self" and the appearance of a diversity of psychological problems. This study examined the extent to which a wide variety of psychological disorders (somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility/aggressiveness, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, and psychoticism) and a global index of psychopathological severity may in fact be linked to problems of the "self" according to the FAP conception. Two questionnaires, one relate

This study aims to examine the psychopathological profile of non-homicidal sexual offenders (NHSOs) and homicidal sexual offenders (HSOs). Using an incarcerated sample of 96 NHSOs and 74 HSOs in a federal penitentiary in Canada, these offenders are compared in terms of their offending process, maladaptive personality traits, and paraphilic behaviors. A number of cross-tabular and sequential logistic regression analyses are performed. Relative to their counterpart, findings indicate that a higher percentage of HSOs select a victim of choice, report deviant sexual fantasies, mutilate their victi

Although calcification of the basal ganglia is a relatively common and asymptomatic finding on cranial computed tomography, familial idiopathic calcification of the basal ganglia (ICBG) is a rare disorder with neurological and behavioral manifestations. Attention has recently been drawn to the frequency with which cases are diagnosed as schizophrenic (Cummings et al. 1983; Lowenthal, 1986; Davison, 1987). We report a family in which a mother and son have ICBG, but while the son has a paranoid schizophrenia and intellectual deterioration, the mother shows no psychiatric illness. A review of the

The case of a 69 years old female patient is reported, who developed paranoid behaviour due to cobalamin-deficiency without megaloblastosis based on a chronic gastric atrophy. The psychosis showed complete remission after vitamin B 12 supplementation. The discussion leads to the question, whether or not chronic use of tricyclic antidepressants may be one cause of atrophic gastritis. Furthermore, differentialdiagnostic reflections consider the role of cobalamine and folate in the synthesis of monoamine neurotransmitters in the brain.

One-hundred Dutch and 100 American heroin addicts receiving methadone were administered the Symptom Check List-90 (SCL-90), and a Modal Profile Analysis was performed to determine whether or not the mean profiles of the nine SCL-90 subscales were comparable for these two White male samples. Three profile-shape components correctly classified over 85% of both groups and reflected (1) Anxious-depressed, (2) Hostile and (3) Paranoid syndromes. The relationships of the SCL-90 profiles to selected psychosocial characteristics were also studied. For example, marijuana use was associated with the Par

Homicide is the most serious and costly criminal offense and better forensic and criminological understanding of homicidal ideation as a potential psychobehavioral precursor to homicidal conduct is critical. Using data from the 2016 Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) distributed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), we found 64,910 cases of homicidal ideation among a sample of 25.6 + million-a prevalence of 0.25%. Numerous conditions conferred increased substantially the likelihood of homicidal ideation incl

Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RTS) is a rare genetic disorder with characteristic physical anomalies. It is characterized by mental retardation, postnatal growth deficiency, microcephaly, specific facial characteristics, broad thumbs, and big toes. Behavioral problems are common with RTS; they include mental retardation, impulsivity, distractibility, instability of mood, stereotypes, poor coordination, atypical depression, and mania. To date, there is lack of literature on the presence of schizophrenia or non-affective psychosis with RTS. Here, we describe two cases where there is co-morbid psych

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ictal and psychiatric aspects underlying the high risk of suicide among epileptic patients.
METHOD: We surveyed the records of 1611 epileptic patients seen in a neurology clinic during an eight-year period, found four who died by suicide, and characterized their ictal and psychiatric features.
RESULTS: All four epileptic patients had partial complex seizures and temporal lobe foci. Two had an associated paranoid schizophrenia with suicidal ideation, and good or improving seizure control at the time of their deaths. Another patient killed himself during a brief psyc

The purpose of this study was a test the hypothesis that the use of psychiatric labels leads to reduced expectations for patient change and recovery. Thirty-nine staff members at a residential mental hospital were given a description of a patient and asked to indicate expected length of stay in the hospital, chance of readmission, chance of leading a normal life, and overall prognosis. A diagnosis of schizophrenia, paranoid type was included at the end of half of the descriptions and was omitted in the other half. It was found that staff working in the acute treatment areas were significantly

BACKGROUND: Although traditional forms of therapy for anxiety-related disorders (eg, cognitive behavioral therapy, CBT) have been effective, there have been long-standing issues with these therapies that largely center around the costs and risks associated with the components comprising the therapeutic process. To treat certain types of specific phobias, sessions may need to be held in public, therefore risking patient confidentiality and the occurrence of uncontrollable circumstances (eg, weather and bystander behavior) or additional expenses such as travel to reach a destination. To address

Because personality disorders are associated with significant impairment in interpersonal relationships, special issues and problems arise in the formation of a therapeutic alliance in the treatment of patients with these disorders. In particular, patients with narcissistic, borderline, and paranoid personality traits are likely to have troubled interpersonal attitudes and behaviors that will complicate the patient's engagement with the therapist. While a strong positive therapeutic alliance is predictive of more successful treatment outcomes, strains and ruptures in the alliance may lead to p
