Parental Coping, Affective Symptoms, and Affective Reactions to Parenting Stress in Parents of Adolescents During COVID-19.

It is important to improve understanding of how parenting stress and coping strategies may be associated. Various coping strategies have been associated with different psychosocial outcomes, including anxiety and depression. Gender differences in coping between women and men may contribute to women reporting higher levels of psychological distress, depression, and anxiety. However, there is a lack of research on gender differences in stress responses and coping behaviors among parents in response to the stress of parenting adolescents, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The current stu

Eco-Emotion Profiles Among Parents and Links to Violent and Neglectful Parenting: Parental Burnout as a Mediating Pathway.

Climate change is a psychosocial stressor with implications for parenting and child safety. Many parents experience eco-emotions that can tax caregiving resources and self-regulation, yet evidence is scarce on how eco-emotion profiles relate to parental burnout and violent and neglectful parenting. This study aimed to identify eco-emotion profiles and to test whether parental burnout explains associations with psychological aggression, physical assault, and neglect toward children. Participants were 1,203 cisgender heterosexual Italian parents (70.16% mothers; M = 45.60, SD = 9.37) who complet

Are Parent Substance Use Severity and Psychopathology Associated with Parenting Behaviors Among Parents with Substance Use Disorders?

OBJECTIVE: We sought to understand associations between parent substance use severity, fentanyl use, and parent psychopathology with two domains of parenting behaviors, warmth and hostility. DESIGN: We analyzed cross-sectional data from parents with substance use disorders (n = 308). We tested whether substance use severity and psychopathology were associated with parenting behaviors (warmth and hostility). We also examined associations between fentanyl use and parenting behaviors. Additionally, we investigated whether the interactions between substance use severity and psychopathology, as we

Parents' Past Bonding Experience with Their Parents Interacts with Current Parenting Stress to Influence the Quality of Interaction with Their Child.

Healthy dyadic interactions serve as a foundation for child development and are typically characterised by mutual emotional availability of both the parent and child. However, several parental factors might undermine optimal parent-child interactions, including the parent's current parenting stress levels and the parent's past bonding experiences with his/her own parents. To date, no study has investigated the possible interaction of parenting stress and parental bonding history with their own parents on the quality of emotional availability during play interactions. In this study, 29 father-c

Latent profiles of parental attachment styles and their associations with parenting behaviors among parents of school-aged children.

This study utilized Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) to identify attachment style latent profiles among parents of school-aged children and examine their association with parenting behaviors. Analysis of attachment anxiety and avoidance dimensions revealed four distinct parental profiles: low anxiety/avoidance, high anxiety/moderate avoidance, moderate anxiety/avoidance, and high anxiety/avoidance. Low anxiety/avoidance parents demonstrated significantly greater acceptance than all other latent profiles. Conversely, parents in high anxiety profiles exhibited significantly more rejecting behaviors

Parenting Young Children (PYC) for parents with intellectual and developmental disabilities: parents' experiences of the support program's methodology.

BACKGROUND: Research on how parents with intellectual and developmental disabilities perceive the Parenting Young Children (PTC) support program for the development of parenting skills is scarce. The study explored parents' experiences of PYC's methodology. METHOD: Interviews were conducted with 15 Swedish parents (8 mothers, 7 fathers) at risk for child neglect who had received PYC for 6 months or longer. The interviews were analysed with reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Two main themes, with six subthemes, were identified: "Developing a trusting relationship with the PYC practitioner"

The impact of parental general anxiety disorder on parenting practices among Libyan parents: cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders is one of the most prevalent mental diseases globally, with cases rising by over 55% from 1990 to 2019. Recent research suggests anxiety can be contagious and may affect daily routines and parenting practices. In North African and Middle Eastern countries, where people face unique challenges such as natural disasters, war, and economic instability, the impact of anxiety on parenting is not well studied. This study aims to explore how general anxiety disorder (GAD) affects parenting styles and to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of GAD among Libyan parents,

Parents Reaching Out to Parents: An Appreciative, Qualitative Evaluation of Stakeholder Experiences of the Parent Champions in the Community Project.

BACKGROUND: Bronchiolitis is a seasonal, global acute lower respiratory tract infection caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and is a leading cause of hospital admission in young children. A peer-led (parents to parents) intervention was implemented to empower parents of children at risk of bronchiolitis and reduce hospital admissions. This paper reported the evaluation that aimed to gain the perspectives and experiences of five key stakeholder groups. METHODS: A qualitative remote interview-based design, informed by Appreciative Inquiry was used. Thematic analysis was used. RESULTS:

Parents in jail.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the number of children in the United States with parents incarcerated in jail and to describe the characteristics of these parents and their criminal histories. SETTING: Inmates of local jails accounting for 36.5% of the incarcerated population of the US in 1989. PARTICIPANTS: Personal interviews with 5675 inmates randomly selected from 393,553 inmates of 3312 local jails in 1989. RESULTS: 44,263 (36%) inmates had children younger than the age of 15. Fathers outnumbered mothers 10-fold; the majority were in their 20s or 30s, unmarried, and poorly educated. The vast m

The parental paradox.

Parenthood is in turmoil: On the one hand many of the parental tasks have been taken over by social institutions and on the other psychological aspects of the parent-child relation are emphasized. We see three important developments: The relationship between parents and children has been democratized, the psychological and juridical position has been acknowledged and the social check on parental behaviour has changed dramatically. In this dynamic field, children's rights have risen as a new way of solving family problems. Rights for children create new possibilities for recognizing the growing

Homicidal parents.

This paper describes a series of 13 cases of parents who have killed their children. A review of the literature suggests that child murder is infrequent and committed in most instances by the parents. Most attention has been directed to the universal phenomenon of child abuse. The killing of a child in our culture is viewed much more seriously than the killing of a newborn infant, legally defined as infanticide. Only a few authors have reported on the former, and their studies tend to demonstrate that a higher proportion of these crimes are perpetrated by mothers. Homicidal behaviour in parent

Parental Stigma and "Good Parenting" in Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

OBJECTIVE: Parents of children with mental health problems often experience judgment about their parenting. Such stigma is associated with lower parental well-being and greater child symptom severity. Theory-driven descriptions of and interventions for parental stigma are limited. The authors aimed to investigate how parents experience and cope with stigma via the What Matters Most framework. METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 24 parents (50% women, mean±SD age=39.8±8.6 years) of children ages 6-17 with depression (N=9), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (N=7), or substance use pr

Authoritative Parenting Is Associated with Healthier Lifestyle Patterns in University Students.

Background: Health-promoting lifestyle behaviors established during young adulthood play a crucial role in shaping long-term physical and mental health outcomes, including the risk of chronic disease, psychological well-being, and quality of life. Parenting styles represent an important psychosocial factor that may be associated with health-related behaviors; however, evidence regarding their association with multidimensional health-promoting lifestyles among university students remains limited. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 700 university students. Parenting styles (aut

Associations Between Parental Alcohol Use and Parenting Practices: A Systematic Review.

Parental practices strongly influence offspring development, and parental alcohol use may affect parenting behavior. However, most studies have focused on child-related outcomes. This review instead examined associations between parental drinking and parenting practices. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search in MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, and Scopus identified 9053 articles. Of these, 222 full texts were screened by two reviewers, and 77 were included for critical appraisal. After quality assessment, 68 studies published between 1991 and 2026 were reviewed. Studies were included if t

Augmenting Parenting Programs With the Pause Mobile App: Mixed Methods Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Parenting programs are the recommended treatment for common mental health problems of childhood such as conduct disorder. In the United Kingdom, local authorities have responsibility for providing or commissioning these programs through face-to-face and video call weekly groups and e-learning style asynchronous offerings. However, there has been a shortage of research into the potential of digital resources to augment and enhance parenting groups. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study aimed to explore whether providing digital microinterventions in a mobile app (Pause) to augment parenting

Parenting Stress Trajectories in Parents of Children with Congenital Heart Disease.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines parenting stress trajectories in parents of children with congenital heart disease from 4 to 60 months and identifies predictors. METHODS: Sixty-six parents completed the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-4-SF) at 4, 24, and 60 months of child's age. The PSI-4-SF provides a score on three dimensions of parenting stress: parental distress (PD), difficult child (DC), and parent-child dysfunctional interactions (PCDI). Multilevel growth curves were modeled to characterize the intraindividual evolution of parenting stress during early childhood. RESULTS: PD a

Evolutionary trade-offs between testes size and parenting in Neotropical glassfrogs.

In males, large testes size signifies high sperm production and is commonly linked to heightened sperm competition levels. It may also evolve as a response to an elevated risk of sperm depletion due to multiple mating or large clutch sizes. Conversely, weapons, mate or clutch guarding may allow individuals to monopolize mating events and preclude sperm competition, thereby reducing the selection of large testes. Herein, we examined how paternal care, sexual size dimorphism (SSD), weaponry and female fecundity are linked to testes size in glassfrogs. We found that paternal care was associated w

Integrating a Parenting Assessment into Practice: Pediatric Providers' Time and Perspectives.

PURPOSE: To integrate a parenting assessment into primary care and assess pediatric providers' time needed to review it and their perceptions of the process. DESCRIPTION: The Quick Parenting Assessment (QPA) is a validated, 13 item parent support tool that assesses for healthy and unhealthy parenting practices. Higher QPAs indicate more unhealthy parenting being used. In a clinic serving low-income parents, the QPA was integrated into the 15 month, 30 month, 5 year, and 8 year well child visits. After each well child visit in which the QPA was administered, providers were invited to complete
