Parents' expectations for the management of pediatric diarrhea in the clinical setting: perspectives of parents and physicians in Bangladesh.

Diarrheal diseases are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children globally, and antibiotics are often inappropriately used in the management of pediatric diarrhea. This study explores how parents' expectations influence the prescription of antibiotics for pediatric diarrhea in Bangladesh. We used qualitative methods to explore parents' expectations when bringing their child with diarrhea to hospital and how physicians perceive and manage expectations. We conducted interviews with 36 parents and 18 hospital physicians across three hospitals. Data analysis followed an applied themati

A universal home-visit programme to tailor support to first-time parents: a qualitative case study on parents' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The first year of a child's life is essential for promoting a healthy life, and the transition to becoming a parent can be a challenge; parents need to develop confidence in their own capacity to care for their child. The national Child Health Services programme in Sweden offers parental support, both on a universal level and in accordance with the individual family's needs. This study explores parents' experiences of an extended home-visit programme offered through a Family Centre to all first-time parents in a municipality. METHODS: This case study is based on a qualitative refl

It's Not Just What Parents Say, It's Why They Say It: Students' Perceptions of Parents' Motives for Alcohol Communication.

OBJECTIVE: Previous work has investigated parents' reports of motives for communicating with their young adults about alcohol. Although parents' self-reported motives may predict intentions to communicate, young adults' perceptions of their parents' motives may be important for understanding young adults' responses to parental alcohol communication. The present study was conducted to explore college students' perceptions of their parents' motives for alcohol communication and to investigate whether perceptions of these motives predict changes in alcohol consumption and related consequences dur

Tasks performed by parents to enable telepractice for children with communication disorders: an interview study with clinicians and parents.

PURPOSE: Current service models in childhood rehabilitation promote the active participation of parents/caregivers in their children's therapies. The existing literature provides a limited understanding of the tasks and responsibilities parents undertake in their children's therapies, especially over telepractice. This study describes the tasks undertaken by parents in their children's speech therapy delivered virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted with parents and speech-language pathologists, using open-ended interviews. Interviews wer

Moderators and mediators of outcomes of parents with substance use problems: further evaluation of the Parents under Pressure programme.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Family-focused interventions can improve family functioning when parents have substance use problems. However, there has been little focus upon potential predictors of change and analysis of mechanisms of change. This study aims to identify mediators and moderators of change in a pragmatic, multi-site, randomized controlled trial of the Parents under Pressure (PuP) programme, a family-focused intervention for parents with substance use and other problems, and treatment-as-usual (TAU). DESIGN: Secondary analysis of data: multi-level modelling was used to investigate modera

PARENTS 2 study protocol: pilot of Parents' Active Role and ENgagement in the review of Their Stillbirth/perinatal death.

BACKGROUND: The perinatal mortality review meeting that takes place within the hospital following a stillbirth or neonatal death enables clinicians to learn vital lessons to improve care for women and their families for the future. Recent evidence suggests that parents are unaware that a formal review following the death of their baby takes place. Many would welcome the opportunity to feedback into the meeting itself. Parental involvement in the perinatal mortality review meeting has the potential to improve patient satisfaction, drive improvements in patient safety and promote an open culture

A randomized controlled trial and economic evaluation of the Parents Under Pressure program for parents in substance abuse treatment.

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest in the provision of parenting support to substance misusing parents. METHODS: This pragmatic, multi-center randomized controlled trial compared an intensive one-to-one parenting program (Parents under Pressure, PuP) with Treatment as Usual (TAU) in the UK. Parents were engaged in community-based substance misuse services and were primary caregivers of children less than 2.5 years of age. The primary outcome was child abuse potential, and secondary outcomes included measures of parental emotional regulation assessed at baseline, 6 and 12-months. A prospect

Different transmission rates of herpesvirus thymidine kinase reporter transgenes from founder male parents and male parents of subsequent generations.

Previously we demonstrated that lines of transgenic mice carrying the herpes simplex type 1 virus thymidine kinase (HSV1-tk) reporter gene are male-sterile. Ectopic transcription of the HSV1-tk reporter in the testis was initiated downstream of the normal translation initiation codon and truncated proteins consistent with translational initiation at the second and third ATG codons were synthesized. Here we describe the effects on fertility 1) of converting the second and third ATG codons of the HSV1-tk reporter to CTG codons and 2) of utilizing the HSV type 2 thymidine kinase (HSV2-tk) reporte

The Role of Perceived Societal Pressure and Parents' Child-Oriented Self-Construal in Overprotective and Controlling Parenting in Belgian Parents of Adolescents.

Societal expectations and demands regarding parenting roles have significantly intensified in recent decades, putting pressure on parents to be perfect in their parental role, which may push them to become overly involved in their children's lives. Although evidence suggests that perceived societal pressure is associated with overprotective and controlling parenting, less is known about which parents are more sensitive to such pressure. We investigated whether parents' child-oriented interdependent self-construal (the degree to which parents consider their relationship with their children as s

Insecure Attachment to Parents and PTSD among Adolescents: The Roles of Parent-Child Communication, Perceived Parental Depression, and Intrusive Rumination.

Based on attachment theory and a social-cognitive model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), this study examined the roles of parent-child communication, perceived parental depression, and intrusive rumination in the association between insecure attachment to parents and PTSD among adolescents following the Jiuzhaigou earthquake. In this study, 620 adolescents were recruited to complete self-report questionnaires. The results showed that the direct association between anxious attachment and PTSD was significant, but that between avoidant attachment and PTSD was non-significant. In addition

Building on shared experiences: The evaluation of a phone-based parent-to-parent support program for helping parents with their child's substance misuse.

AIMS: To evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a phone-based parent-to-parent support program, in which parents who have had children with substance use problems provided support and guidance to other parents seeking help about their child's substance misuse. METHOD: 228 parents completed a 2.5-day coach workshop and 6-months of ongoing training and support in the Invitation to Change Approach (ITC), a program blending evidence-based strategies for addressing substance use disorders. Trained parent coaches provided support and guidance to 278 parents for up to 8 weeks. We evaluated th

Different Hunger Experiences for Parents and Their Children in a family: Long-Term Food Insecurity, Parental Psychological Distress, and Harsh Parenting.

Evidence shows that physical violence and verbal aggression toward children is more prevalent in food-insecure families than food-secure families. However, less is known whether such associations are valid when considering food insecurity could be a long-term phenomenon and also different between parents and children. Using the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, results based on latent class analysis and mediation analysis showed that the use of scolding is lowest among families where children experience consistently low food insecurity over time. However, this pattern does not extend to spanking
