Giant epidermoid cyst penetrating the skull: a case report and literature review.

Intracranial epidermoid cyst is a rare pseudotumor of the nervous system, accounting for 0.2%-1.8% of all intracranial tumors. It is usually located in the cerebellopontine Angle or parasellar area, with insipid onset, slow growth and usually less than 2 cm in diameter. Giant epidermoid cysts that invade the bone have rarely been reported in the literature. Herein, we report a case of giant ECs extradural to the parietal bone, penetrating the skull and continuing to expand outward. In addition, a systematic search of four authoritative databases was conducted to collect the relevant reports of

Hydatid cyst of the skull: report of four cases.

Four new cases of cranial echinococcosis are presented and the literature is reviewed. Young males are most commonly affected. Early cases present as an expansile osteolytic lesion in the diploe. The more advanced forms manifest as multilocular or unilocular destructive lesions with adjacent soft-tissue masses. Two patients with unilocular hydatid cysts recovered completely after surgery. One youth with the multilocular form died four months after operation. The other patient is well two years after surgery. The location, anatomical forms of the lesion, and the importance of early diagnosis ar

Intradiploic epidermoid cyst with focal internal enhancement.

We report a case of intradiploic epidermoid cyst with focal internal enhancement. The patient was a 55-year-old woman presenting with right temporal head protrusion and head heaviness. Skull radiography and computed tomography demonstrated an expansile mass in the right diploic space. On magnetic resonance imaging, the mass showed makedly high signal T2-weighted images (T2WI) and intermediate to low signal on T1WI. On contrast-enhanced T1WI, there was nodular internal enhancement, which corresponded to neovascularity on pathology, as well as rim-like enhancement. It should be noted that intern

Split-thickness calvarial grafts in young children.

Sixteen patients (mean age, 1.9 years) underwent split-thickness calvarial bone grafting using a full-thickness craniotomy, high-speed drill, and osteotomes for bone harvesting. The minimal calvarial bone thickness for a successful graft was found to be 7 mm. All patients were diagnostically studied preoperatively with computed tomographic scans and skull films. The mean follow-up was 2.9 years (range, 0.75-7.9 years). All patients had successful graft take. There were no infections or mortalities. Continued graft growth was seen in all patients. There was one dural tear during harvesting with

Lump on the scalp of a child arising over a previous parietal fracture: growing skull fracture or post-traumatic lipoma?

A young girl was referred to our Institution for the appearance of a painless soft swelling in the right parietal region of the scalp. In the same site, the patient had a parietal bone fracture 1 year ago. In the suspicion of a growing skull fracture, the patient underwent radiological investigations. Ultrasound showed a soft, poorly vascularised swelling with parenchymatous content. The skull X-ray showed an apparent healing of the previous fracture. CT scan and MRI confirmed the correct healing of the fracture and described the presence of a lipomatous mass. The mass was surgically removed a

Effects of orofacial applications of low-magnitude, high-frequency mechanical vibration on cranial sutures and calvarial bones: A micro-computed tomography study in rats.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of orthodontically aimed low-magnitude, high-frequency mechanical vibration (OLMHFMV) on intact calvarial bone, specifically the parietal and temporal, and cranial sutures, including the sagittal and parietotemporal, of rats in differing stages of growth and development. METHODS: Forty Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: 2 control groups and 2 OLMHFMV groups. Subsequently, 0.3 cN of force with a frequency of 30 Hz was applied as OLMHFMV on the temporomandibular joint region in the rats in the OLMHFMV-1 group, with the proto

Evaluation in cats of a new material for cranioplasty: a composite of plaster of Paris and hydroxylapatite.

The materials ordinarily used to reconstruct bone defects in the calvaria and facial bones either are difficult to shape, are partially resorbed by the body, or are likely to become infected if used near a contaminated area such as the frontal sinus. Calcium sulfate hemihydrate (plaster of Paris) has been known for years to have excellent reparative qualities in bone defects, but ordinarily it is quickly resorbed. Consequently, a new material, a composite of a dense form of plaster of Paris and hydroxylapatite, was devised to provide nonabsorbable hydroxylapatite particles for bone to form aro

Malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the cranial vault: a case report.

We present the case of a 19-year-old patient who was admitted with a subcutaneous scalp lump associated with bilateral papilloedema. CT demonstrated a large heterogeneous vault lesion destroying the right parietal bone. The mass was hyperdense and enhanced slightly with contrast. An important intracranial epidural extension was also demonstrated. The mass was completely removed through a parietal craniectomy and histological examination was characteristic for a B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Staging revealed other bony lesions and neoplastic cells were also found in the CSF. Systemic and intra

Cranial epidural empyema with osteomyelitis caused by actinomyces, CT, and MRI appearance.

Actinomycosis is an uncommon cause of intracranial infection. Epidural empyema represents about 6% of CNS actinomycotic lesions. A case of an epidural empyema with parietal bone osteomyelitis caused by Actinomyces israelii is presented. Relevant neuroimaging features were bone erosions and a multiloculated collection with annular contrast enhancing on CT. Postoperative MRI revealed extensive involvement of the neighbor dura, falx, and subdural space. MRI was crucial to follow-up the response to antibiotic treatment.

Untreated parieto-occipital encephalomeningohydrocele.

Mammalian carotid body arterial chemoreceptors function as an early warning system for hypoxia, triggering acute life-saving arousal and cardiorespiratory reflexes. To serve this role, carotid body glomus cells are highly sensitive to decreases in oxygen availability. While the mitochondria and plasma membrane signaling proteins have been implicated in oxygen sensing by glomus cells, the mechanism underlying their mitochondrial sensitivity to hypoxia compared to other cells is unknown. Here, we identify HIGD1C, a novel hypoxia-inducible gene domain factor isoform, as an electron transport chai

Trigonocephaly and Cranium Bifidum Occultum Treated Simultaneously Using the Split-Bone Technique and Piezosurgery.

Cranium bifidum occultum (CBO) is a rare congenital disease characterized by the anomalous ossification of parietal bones, which presents with a midline bone defect with no extrusion of intracranial content. Its association with craniosynostosis has been reported only a few times to date. The aim of this case report was to describe, for the first time, the association between presumed non-syndromic trigonocephaly and CBO, as well as the treatment of both conditions using the same surgical approach. This was done by performing fronto-orbital advancement and the split-bone technique using piezos

Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis With Hypothalamic-pituitary and Bone Involvement: A Report of 2 Cases.

Case 1: A 31-year-old woman presented with secondary amenorrhea, polyuria, and polydipsia. Three years later, magnetic resonance imaging of the brain done for headaches found thickening of the pituitary infundibulum. Laboratory evaluation indicated central vasopressin deficiency, mild hyperprolactinemia, and central hypogonadism. Six months later, progression of the infundibular lesion was documented, now contacting the optic chiasm. Biopsy showed epithelioid histiocytes, chronic inflammation, and gliosis. On postoperative scan, a lesion in the parietal calvaria was identified, which was solit

[Parietal thoracic tuberculosis in the absence of immunosuppression by HIV infection].

Parietal thoracic abscess formation of a tuberculous nature is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, usually described in cases of severe tuberculosis encountered in HIV-infected patients. We report 13 cases of parietal tuberculosis in patients without HIV infection who were investigated between October 1988 and December 1999. During this period, we cared for 2 663 patients with tuberculosis. The series included 9 women and 4 men age 17 to 60 years, mean age 39 years. The clinical aspect of the parietal abscess was variable. Cold fluctuating abscess was dominant in 10 cases. In 3 cases,

Centrally located acquired bilateral nevus of ota-like macules: a bizarre pattern.

A 22-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for pigmented lesions located on her face. These had gradually increased during the past 4 years. Computed tomography (CT) of her head revealed no significant parenchymal abnormalities of temporal, maxillary and sphenoid bones or of either parietal bone. Further screening, including neurologic, ophthalmologic, orthopedic, and visceral investigations, did not reveal any abnormalities. There was no family history of abnormal cutaneous pigmentation.

Bilateral epidural hematoma in a pyknodysostotic child.

Pyknodysostosis is a rarely encountered disease. It is characterized by abnormal facial development, fragility of the bones with relatively mild trauma, cranial abnormalities including widely opened sutures and fontanels frontal bossing, wrinkled skin, finger and nail abnormalities. In the literature, pyknodysostosis was reported only as case reports. Here, we describe a pyknodysostotic child with a bilateral parietal epidural hematoma, caused by a relatively mild head trauma. He was operated on, and the hematoma was evacuated through two different parietal craniotomies. We reported this case,

Early recurrence of Rosai-Doefman disease after total removal resection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) involving the central nervous system (CNS) is rare and observed in 5% of all patients with extranodal RDD. According to a previous report, gross total resection is curative; however, we encountered a case of recurrence following gross total resection. We discuss our case and review previous reports on recurrent RDD. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 68-year-old woman came to the hospital complaining of left parietal mass. A tumor that had partially eroded the frontal bone was found. As the lesion was suspected to be malignant, we performed a total resection. Patholog

[A case of infant epidural hematoma treated by continuous drainage of cephalohematoma].

A female infant was born at 36 weeks with vacuum extraction. Her weight was 2.216 g and Apgar score was 9. She had a cephalohematoma at right parietal region. The cephalohematoma grew during 6 days after birth, then she came to our hospital. On arrival, her consciousness was alert and there were no neurological deficits. Her head circumference was 22.5 cm, and she had a pulsatile soft cephalohematoma, 7 cm in diameter, at right parietal region. Ultrasound examination showed a midline shift of the brain and CT scan revealed an epidural hematoma with bone fracture and cephalohematoma. We chose t

Impaired gastric acidification negatively affects calcium homeostasis and bone mass.

Activation of osteoclasts and their acidification-dependent resorption of bone is thought to maintain proper serum calcium levels. Here we show that osteoclast dysfunction alone does not generally affect calcium homeostasis. Indeed, mice deficient in Src, encoding a tyrosine kinase critical for osteoclast activity, show signs of osteopetrosis, but without hypocalcemia or defects in bone mineralization. Mice deficient in Cckbr, encoding a gastrin receptor that affects acid secretion by parietal cells, have the expected defects in gastric acidification but also secondary hyperparathyroidism and
