Pasteurella is a genus of commensal bacteria of the oral cavity of several domesticated animals and a common cause of cellulitis after animal bites. Pasteurella has also been reported as a rare cause of endocarditis, with only 35 prior cases of definite Pasteurella endocarditis in the literature. Here, we present a case of Pasteurella multocida endocarditis treated successfully with surgery and antibiosis, as well as a review of the literature with statistical analysis of correlations between risk factors and clinical outcomes, as well as between treatment choices and clinical outcomes. Despit

Pasteurella pneumotropica is an important bacterial pathogen in both animals and humans. Most reported Pasteurella infections in humans involve skin and soft tissues, often after an animal bite, scratch, or lick to an open wound. We report a case of septic arthritis with Pasteurella pneumotropica in a diabetic and cardiopathic patient who was the victim of a rat bite in the street, with a good evolution after medical and surgical treatment.

Pasteurella multocida a small gram-negative coccobacilli is primarily found as normal flora of cats and dogs. These organisms can cause a variety of infections in humans, usually the result of scratches, bites and licks by percutaneous inoculation of the organism. Most cases of septic arthritis involve a cat or dog bite distal to the involved joint without direct penetrating injury to the joint. On scenarios were Pasteurella infection is suspected within a prosthetic joint, aggressive surgical debridement and/or removal of the prosthesis with intravenous antibiotics is recommended. With the aim to extend the present knowledge on possible systemic spreading of Pasteurella multocida in pigs with bronchopneumonia, the occurrence and associated lesions of P. multocida were described by comparing cultural detection, pathological evaluation and in situ hybridization of P. multocida in lungs, hearts and kidneys from cases of porcine bronchopneumonia. P. multocida was cultivated from the lung lesions in 114 out of a total of 148 cases of porcine bronchopneumonia. Among the 114 cases, P. multocida was also cultivated from the pericardial sacs of 40 pigs and the kidneys of seven p

AIMS: To examine the variability among Pasteurella multocida strains isolated from pigs (nasal, tonsil and lung specimens) and humans in France.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The genetic diversity of 117 French isolates of P. multocida, obtained from pigs (n = 101) and humans (n = 16) and three reference strains, was evaluated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) after macrorestriction with ApaI. Sixty-four patterns were detected. The genetic relationships revealed five clusters (Aa1, Aa2, Aa3, Ab and B). The pig isolates obtained from pneumonic lungs and nasal cavities were clustered in groups

In most gram-negative bacteria, acquired multiresistance is conferred by large plasmids compiling numerous antimicrobial resistance genes. Here, we show an evolutionary alternative strategy used by Pasteurella multocida to become resistant to multiple clinically relevant antibiotics. Thirteen beta-lactam-resistant clinical isolates, concomitantly resistant to tetracyclines and/or streptomycin as well as to sulfonamides, were studied. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis revealed different profiles among the isolates, showing that clonal dissemination was not the sole event responsible for

Pasteurella multocida is a bacterial pathogen that can cause significant disease and subsequent effects on research activities involving rabbits. Although several vaccines have been tested under laboratory conditions, field trials of vaccines for the control of P. multocida in rabbits are few. We used a potassium thiocyanate extract (PTE) produced from P. multocida serotype D:3,12,15 to vaccinate Pasteurella-free rabbits at their introduction into a colony having endemic infection with P. multocida serotype A:3. Groups of 15 rabbits were vaccinated either SC or IN with 1.0 mg PTE once weekly f

BACKGROUND: Postoperative bacterial endophthalmitis is caused by the patient's endogenous flora in most cases (80 %). Pasteurella multocida (PM) is a Gram-negative coccobacillus found in the upper respiratory tract of dogs and cats and is very rarely implicated in postoperative endophthalmitis.
HISTORY AND SIGNS: We describe a case of PM endophthalmitis that developed after cataract surgery.
THERAPY AND OUTCOME: Cultures of both the conjunctiva and the aqueous humor were positive for PM. Topical, intravitreous and intravenous antibiotics were administered. Despite treatment, the outcome was

We report the first case of Pasteurella multocida meningo-encephalitis with aphasia in a 28 year-old-patient. The investigations confirmed the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis. But the delay in identification of the organism involved iterative changes of antibiotherapy. The evolution was finally favourable with appropriate antibiotic treatment. The epidemiologic investigation highlighted the responsibility of a patient's cat carrying the same bacterial strain. Finally we discuss the epidemiologic, clinical and therapeutic features of this unusual meningitis.

A 20-day-old male infant presented with fever, decreased alertness and quadriparesis as a result of Pasteurella multocida meningitis and C1-2 vertebral osteomyelitis. Although his household contained 2 pet cats, there was no history of bites, scratches or licks. We speculate that colonization of the nasopharynx was followed by contiguous spread to the retropharyngeal soft tissue, cervical vertebrae and meninges.

Pneumonia is a leading cause of loss to the sheep and cattle industry throughout the world. Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica is one of the most important respiratory pathogens of domestic ruminants and causes serious outbreaks of acute pneumonia in neonatal, weaned and growing lambs, calves, and goats. M. haemolytica is also an important cause of pneumonia in adult animals. Transportation, viral infections with agents such as infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus, parainfluenza-3 virus or bovine respiratory syncytial virus, overcrowding, housing of neonates and weaned animals together an

Pasteurella multocida is a common cause of wound infection following animal-inflicted wounds, but is a rare cause of female genito-urinary sepsis. We present a case of vulval sepsis and a case of intrapartum septicaemia with this bacterium. These two cases indicate that Pasteurella multocida can occasionally colonise the female lower genital tract and this bacterium should be considered in the differential diagnosis of serious infection related to this site.

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is well recognized as "normal flora" in the upper respiratory tract of cats, dogs and other animals. Recently, various infections due to P. multocida in human have been noted as pulmonary infections in the patients with chronic pulmonary diseases as well as skin abscesses or septicemia after an animal bite or scratch. We report here three cases of respiratory tract infections caused by P. multocida. The first two patients had acute exacerbation of bronchiectasis caused by P. multocida and the other patients with pulmonary emphysema developed pneumonia. Thes

Thirty-eight clinical isolates of Pasteurella multocida, recovered from a continuous flow, farrow-to-finish swine herd, were characterized by capsular serotyping and restriction endonuclease analysis (REA) in order to study the epidemiology of P. multocida pneumonia. Twenty-three of the 38 isolates obtained in the study belonged to serotype A. They displayed three REA patterns after digestion with HpaII, of which one designated A-3 represented 70% of the samples. The remaining 15 isolates were serotype D. Four different REA patterns were observed in the type D isolates. The REA type D-1 was mo

Twenty transport-stressed goats were divided into two groups. The first group was further stressed with steroid. Pasteurella haemolytica was found at various sites in the nasal cavity of goats in this group as early as 2 weeks post-transportation. The successful isolations continued consistently with more goats having pure growth of P. haemolytica at later stages. Mild catarrh rhinitis, loss of epithelial cilia and erosions were the main lesions observed in the nasal cavity. Goats in the second group that were not given steroid injections had inconsistent bacterial isolation and less severe pa

The effectiveness of an oil adjuvant vaccine (OAV) incorporating locally isolated strains of Pasteurella haemolytica type 7 and Pasteurella multocida types A and D was compared with that of Carovax (Wellcome Laboratories) in imported cross-bred lambs. The criterion of efficacy was the ability of the vaccines to reduce the extent of pneumonic lesions in vaccinated as against unvaccinated control lambs. The OAV produced at this Institute significantly reduced the lung lesions at P less than 0.05 level compared with its control group when challenged with P. haemolytica alone. However, the vaccine

Bacteriological and serological examinations were made on Pasteurella multocida infection in two rabbit-breeding colonies. The organism was localized in the paranasal sinuses of 53 of 54 infected rabbits, excreting to the external nares of 49 rabbits. It was also isolated from the trachea and middle and inner ear of half of the infected animals and occasionally from the conjunctiva, lung and heart. The infection rate of the organism was very low (4.3%) in sucklings younger than a month old, but increased with advancing age, reaching nearly 100% in adults more than five months of age. A rapid i
