We report a case of chronic infection with Pasteurella multocida in the lower respiratory tract in a man with a cat. A 77-year-old man presented with recurrent hemoptysis accompanied by bronchiectasis and an opacity in the left lung on chest computed tomography. Although the patient was seropositive for Mycobacterium avium complex, repeated sputum cultures were negative for any specific pathogen. Three years later, he was referred to our hospital for hemoptysis with enhanced opacity in the lower lobe of the left lung. Culture of bronchial lavage fluid obtained via bronchoscopy was positive for

The spread of antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest challenges of our time, making it difficult to treat bacterial diseases. Pasteurella multocida is a widespread facultative pathogenic bacterium, which causes a wide range of diseases in both mammals and birds. In the present study, antibiotic susceptibility of 155 P. multocida strains were tested using the broth microdilution method to obtain the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for 15 antibiotics. The most effective antibiotics against pasteurellosis were ceftiofur, tetracycline, doxycycline, florfenicol and tilmicosin. Of

A total of 52 Pasteurella multocida strains of capsular serogroups (A, B and D) were screened for anti-quorum sensing activity against Chromobacterium violaceum. Of which, 12 strains of serogroups A were found to possess anti-quorum sensing activity. Inhibition activity was highest for strain NIVEDIPm9 and lowest for strain NIVEDIPm30 based on zone of pigment inhibition. Further, cell free extract of NIVEDIPm9 strain showed highest anti-biofilm activity in reference E. coli strain and concentration dependent degradation activity of C6-AHL molecule. In whole genome sequence annotation of NIVEDI

Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative bacterium that colonizes domestic animals. It is commonly implicated in bite and scratch wounds, potentially resulting in cellulitis, superficial abscesses, osteomyelitis, or peritonitis. Rarely, it can lead to bacteremia and septic shock in high-risk patients. We present an atypical presentation of Pasteurella multocida bacteremia and sepsis in a patient with stage 4 decompensated cirrhosis. The patient presented with melena and altered mental status with CT imaging showing a heterogeneous nodular liver along with an enlarged portal vein, gastric varic

A total of 220 birds of age ranging from 3 to 14 weeks old were collected from several backyards and different farms in Sharkia Governorate, Egypt, and surveyed for the presence of fowl cholera. Twenty Pasteurella multocida from chickens (15/145, 10%) and ducks (5/75, 6%) were bacteriologically isolated, and it was shown that the infection was significantly related to age and breed. Capsular typing, using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR), demonstrated that all strains were type A (100%). Disk diffusion assay towards ten antimicrobials revealed high susceptibilities to amikacin, doxycy

Human pasteurellosis with a gynecologic tropism is rare. A 54 year-old woman presented with sepsis due to a uterine abscess from pasteurella multocida (PM) secondarily complicated by gluteal abscess. She had a history of adenomyosis and had previously undergone hysteroscopic sterilization with micro-inserts. Treatment consisted in antibiotherapy, laparoscopic hysterectomy with salpingectomy and abscess drainage, which resulted in complete recovery. This is the first case of uterine abscess from PM with a second septic location.

Pasteurella multocida is one of the most important pathogen that causes pneumonia in swine. Although several virulence factors are known, the pathogenesis of this bacterium is not well-studied. Therefore, to study the pathogenesis of P. multocida infection in porcine lung, next-generation RNA sequencing was used to compare the transcriptomes of P. multocida grown in vivo and in vitro, respectively. After P. multocida infection a total of 704 genes were expressed in vitro, 1422 genes were expressed in vivo, and 237 genes were differentially expressed based on statistical analyses, padj of ≤0.1.

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the leading cause of significant economic losses in the intensive beef industry worldwide. Beside numerous risk factors Pasteurella multocida, which is regarded as a secondary pathogen, may play a role in the development of the disease. Previous studies of strains from swine pneumonia revealed that there are a few clones associated with clinical disease, suggesting that some strains may be more virulent than others. This linkage may be true in the BRD, however composition of P. multocida populations in the herds are slightly characterized. Thus, we decided t

We have previously shown that a Pasteurella multocida cexA mutant (PBA875) was impaired in capsule export and highly attenuated in virulence for mice (J. D. Boyce and B. Adler, Infect. Immun. 68:3463-3468, 2000). In this study we show that immunization with high, but not low, doses of PBA875 can confer significant protection against wild-type challenge. We have also constructed a genetically defined acapsular P. multocida strain (AL18) by inactivation of bcbH, a gene predicted to be involved in polysaccharide biosynthesis. AL18 failed to produce immunoreactive polysaccharide as determined by i

A 74-year-old man with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, immune purpura, and gout presented with a painful, swollen ankle after a cat bite to his leg. On aspiration of the ankle, gram negative pleomorphic rods and monosodium urate crystals were seen and Pasteurella multocida was cultured. He was treated with ampicillin/sulbactam, joint aspiration, and intraarticular steroids, with resolution of infection and return of joint function. The syndromes of Pasteurella arthritis and crystal arthropathy with septic arthritis are reviewed.

Pasteurella multocida is a well recognized cause of sepsis following animal contact particularly bites and scratches. Spread to prosthetic joints may occur particularly in immunocompromised patients. Immunocompromised patients with prosthetic joints should be warned that animals are potential sources of serious infection and urgent medical advice should be sought if bitten or scratched.

The Pasteurella multocida adenylate cyclase gene has been cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The primary structure of the protein (838 amino acids) deduced from the corresponding nucleotide sequence was compared with that of E. coli. The two enzymes have similar molecular sizes and, based on sequence conservation at the protein level, are likely to be organized in two functional domains: the amino-terminal catalytic domain and the carboxy-terminal regulatory domain. It was shown that P. multocida adenylate cyclase synthesizes increased levels of cyclic AMP in E. coli strains deficient i

Atrophic rhinitis was detected in New Zealand White rabbits when upper respiratory tract disease was evaluated during a vaccine field trial for the prevention of pasteurellosis. Of 52 adult rabbits euthanatized and necropsied, 26 (50%) had evidence of turbinate atrophy. Atrophy was detected in 77% of rabbits with Pasteurella multocida infection only, 71% of rabbits with concurrent P multocida and Bordetella bronchiseptica infections, and 6% of rabbits with B bronchiseptica infection only. Grossly, turbinate atrophy was characterized by a mild to severe loss or diminution in the maxilloturbinat

A total of 13,000 pairs of lungs were examined at Mexico's City abbatoir, where 8,000 corresponded to sheep and 5,000 to cattle. From those, 224 pneumonic lesions were observed, obtaining 97 positive isolates, which yielded 112 strains of Pasteurella sp. Forty isolates were identified as P. haemolytica and 72 as P. multocida. One-hundred percent of P. haemolytica belonged to biotype A. Serotypes were determined by indirect haemagglutination. P. multocida isolates were classified according to the acriflavine and hyaluronidase techniques, 61% belonged to type A, 25% to type D and 14% were untypi

Pasteurella multocida type A (PmA) mainly causes respiratory diseases such as pneumonia in bovines, leading to great economic losses to the breeding industry. At present, there is still no effective commercial vaccine against PmA infection. In this study, a mutant strain (PmCQ2Δ4555-4580) with brand-new phenotypes was obtained after serially passaging at 42 °C. Whole genome resequencing and PCR analysis showed that PmCQ2Δ4555-4580 missed six genes, including PmCQ2_004555, PmCQ2_004560, PmCQ2_004565, PmCQ2_004570, PmCQ2_004575, and PmCQ2_004580. Importantly, the virulence of PmCQ2Δ4555-4580 was

Fowl cholera, caused by Pasteurella multocida infection, poses challenges for prevention because of its many serotypes. Bacterins are currently widely used for vaccination against fowl cholera, but protection is limited to homologous strains. Live attenuated vaccines of P. multocida provide some heterologous protection, but side effects are considerable. More recently, protein-based antigens are promising subunit vaccines when their low immunogenicity has been addressed with effective adjuvants. Bacterial flagellin has been widely considered a promising adjuvant for vaccines. In this study, we
