First isolation of the anamorphic basidiomycetous yeast Trichosporon faecale in Germany, from the skin of a patient with tinea pedis.

Mycoses due to yeasts belonging to other genera than Candida have become common in the last years especially in immuno-compromised patients. Species of the anamorphic basidiomycetous yeast genus Trichosporon are such opportunistic human pathogenic yeasts which cause several diseases. In this study, Trichosporon faecale is reported in Germany for the first time. The isolate was taken from a human foot, where it was associated with a tinea pedis. The fungal isolate was identified by investigating the morphology, physiology by a commercial API 32 C-set and molecular data of SSU and LSU rDNA as we

Collection of a mobilized peripheral blood apheresis product from a patient with mucopolysaccharidosis type VII and subsequent CD34+ cell isolation.

The effectiveness of bone marrow transplantation for lysosomal storage diseases like mucopolysaccharidosis type VII (MPSVII) suggests that a gene therapy strategy targeting autologous hematopoietic progenitor cells could be successful. Given the severe systemic manifestations of MPSVII including storage disease in the bone and bone marrow, it was unclear whether sufficient numbers of hematopoietic progenitor cells (CD34+) could be mobilized into the peripheral circulation and subsequently purified from these patients. As reported here, G-CSF mobilization and apheresis were successful, providin

Effects of a group intervention on social isolation in patient-spousal caregiver dyads coping with colorectal cancer: A randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: To validate the efficacy of a previously developed couple-based group intervention in addressing social isolation (SI) among couples coping with colorectal cancer (CRC), building on prior feasibility evidence. METHODS: A single-site randomized controlled trial was conducted at a tertiary hospital in Wuxi, China, and enrolled 170 CRC patient-spousal caregiver dyads. Dyads were randomized to the intervention group (N = 85, standard care plus 6-week couple-based group intervention: 1 in-person plus 5 online sessions) or control group (N = 85, standard care only). Isolation of a multidrug-resistant Candida auris Clade V from an asymptomatic acute myeloid leukemia patient in the intensive care unit.

Candida auris is a multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen, that rapidly spreads within healthcare settings. Here, an acute myeloid leukemia patient undergoing chemotherapy was admitted to the intensive care unit. From the skin, C. auris was isolated and with whole genome sequencing allocated to clade V. Antifungal susceptibility testing showed azole and echinocandin resistance, with the presence of the ERG11 Y132F mutation, while FKS1 was wild-type. This report presents the first multidrug resistant C. auris clade V isolate.

Peri-procedural anesthesia and patient pain experience in pulmonary vein isolation by means of very high-power short-duration radiofrequency ablation.

BACKGROUND: Very high-power short-duration (vHPSD) temperature-controlled radiofrequency ablation (vHPSD) may reduce ablation times and improve patient tolerability, permitting pulmonary vein (PV) isolation under mild conscious sedation. We evaluated of the anesthetic drugs use and patients' pain experience during vHPSD PV isolation. METHODS: Fifty-eight patients, with paroxysmal and persistent atrial fibrillation (AF), treated with QDot Micro catheter and vHPSD (90 w for 4 s) (vHPSD group), were compared with the last 33 patients treated with a surround flow contact force-sensing catheter gu

Catheter Ablation of Atrial Tachycardia after Pulmonary Vein Isolation in a Patient with Common Ostium of Inferior Pulmonary Veins: Case Report.

Background and Objectives: Atrial fibrillation (AF), a prevalent cardiac arrhythmia, significantly impacts the quality of life of those affected. The preferred treatment for symptomatic AF, particularly when pharmacological methods fall short, is catheter ablation with pulmonary vein isolation (PVI). While common pulmonary vein (PV) anatomical variants, such as the right accessory pulmonary vein and the common ostium of left pulmonary veins (LCPV), have been studied extensively, their impact on the long-term outcome of PVI is known to be minimal. However, data on less common anomalies, like th

Impact of pulmonary vein isolation on left bundle branch block following tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy in a patient with persistent atrial fibrillation.

A 61-year-old man was referred to our hospital with exertional dyspnea. Electrocardiography showed atrial fibrillation (AF) with a heart rate of 116 bpm and left bundle branch block (LBBB). Chest radiography demonstrated pulmonary congestion and cardiomegaly with a cardiothoracic ratio of 57%. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a severely reduced left ventricular systolic function (ejection fraction: 32%), suggesting tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy (TIC) due to AF. Following treatment for congestive heart failure and complete isolation of each pulmonary vein, the LBBB disappeared, with

Three monoclonal immunoglobulins, an IgG2(kappa), an IgM(kappa) and an IgM/A hybrid, in one patient. I. Isolation and characterization.

Three monoclonal immunoglobulin components were identified in the plasma of a patient exhibiting a multiple gammopathy. These were an IgG2(κ) and IgM(κ) and an IgM/A hybrid molecule containing mu, alpha, and kappa antigenic determinants. This is the first report of an immunoglobulin hybrid which consists of portions of two different heavy-chain classes, and the significance of this observation in terms of our present concept of immunoglobulin gene arrangement is discussed.

Detection and isolation of type C retrovirus particles from fresh and cultured lymphocytes of a patient with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

Retrovirus particles with type C morphology were found in two T-cell lymphoblastoid cell lines, HUT 102 and CTCL-3, and in fresh peripheral blood lymphocytes obtained from a patient with a cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (mycosis fungoides). The cell lines continuously produce these viruses, which are collectively referred to as HTLV, strain CR(HTLV(CR)). Originally, the production of virus from HUT 102 cells required induction with 5-iodo-2'-deoxyuridine, but the cell line became a constitutive producer of virus at its 56th passage. Cell line CTCL-3 has been a constitutive producer of virus from it

Biofilm production by isolates of Candida species recovered from nonneutropenic patients: comparison of bloodstream isolates with isolates from other sources.

Biofilm production has been implicated as a potential virulence factor of some Candida species responsible for catheter-related fungemia in patients receiving parenteral nutrition. We therefore compared clinical bloodstream isolates representing seven different Candida species to each other and to those from other anatomical sites for the capacity to form biofilms in glucose-containing medium. Potential associations between the capacity to form biofilms and the clinical characteristics of fungemia were also analyzed. Isolates included the following from nonneutropenic patients: 101 bloodstream

Risk of air and surface contamination of SARS-CoV-2 in isolation wards and its relationship with patient and environmental characteristics.

Air and surface contamination of the SARS-CoV-2 have been reported by multiple studies. However, the evidence is limited for the change of environmental contamination of this virus in the surrounding of patients with COVID-19 at different time points during the course of disease and under different conditions of the patients. Therefore, this study aims to understand the risk factors associated with the appearance of SARS-CoV-2 through the period when the patients were staying in the isolation wards. In this study, COVID-19 patients admitted to the isolation wards were followed up for up to 10

Lung Isolation for Whole Lung Lavage in a Pediatric Patient With Atypical Airway Anatomy due to Short Stature: A Case Report.

This case demonstrates the airway management of a pediatric patient with short stature due to STAT5b deficiency, a rare genetic immunodeficiency associated with lung disease and endocrinopathy. The patient had recurrent pulmonary infections and pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) for which whole lung lavage (WLL) was recommended. Due to short stature and overall body habitus, the patient's airway would not accommodate a traditional double-lumen tube (DLT). Therefore, we placed 2 single-lumen breathing tubes: 1 endobronchial and 1 endotracheal, to mimic a DLT and facilitate WLL, demonstrating

First isolation and genotyping of Bartonella henselae from a cat living with a patient with cat scratch disease in Southeast Europe.

BACKGROUND: The bacterial genus Bartonella is distributed worldwide and poses a public health risk. Cat-scratch disease caused by B. henselae in Croatia was first described in 1957. It is present throughout the country: a survey of serum samples from 268 Croatian patients with lymphadenopathy showed that 37.7% had IgG antibodies. Despite this prevalence, we are unaware of reports of Bartonella culturing from infected humans or cats in Croatia or elsewhere in southeast Europe. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we describe the diagnosis of a 12-year-old child with lymphadenopathy in Croatia with cat-scra

Isolation of infectious Zika virus from a urine sample cultured in SIRC cells from a patient suspected of having rubella virus.

A great variety of viruses which cause exanthema share other clinical manifestations, making the etiologic identification a very difficult task, relying exclusively on the clinical examination. Rubella virus (RV) infection during the early stages of pregnancy can lead to serious birth defects, known as congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). In the present report, we described the presence of Zika virus (ZIKV) particles in urine samples and also ZIKV isolation in SIRC cells from the urine of a patient in acute phase of suspected rubella disease. The 50-year-old unvaccinated woman living in Sao Paul
