The Role of Stress and Spirituality in Adolescent Substance Use.

BACKGROUND: Substance use can occur as a result of coping with stress. Within the school context, youth are exposed to stressors related to school achievement and peer-relationships. Protective factors, such as spirituality, may moderate adolescents' engagement in substance use. OBJECTIVE: The current study investigated the role of spirituality in the association between stress and substance use, in an effort to test the hypothesis that spirituality moderates the association between stress and substance use. METHODS: This study used data from youth in grades 6-8 attending 40 parochial privat

Introducing a curricular program culminating in a certificate for training peer tutors in medical education.

AIM: Student tutorials are now firmly anchored in medical education. However, to date there have only been isolated efforts to establish structured teacher training for peer tutors in medicine. To close this gap, a centralized tutor training program for students, culminating in an academic certificate, was implemented at Heidelberg University Medical School. The program also counts within the scope of the post-graduate Baden-Württemberg Certificate in Academic Teaching (Baden-Württemberg Zertifikat für Hochschuldidaktik). METHOD: Based on a needs assessment, a modular program comprised of fou

What Youth Write About and Seek in an Anonymized Online Peer Support Forum: Insights from India.

A high prevalence of psychological distress and unmet mental health needs among youth, combined with a preference for self-reliance and informal support (e.g., peers), poses a major public health challenge. Growing reliance on digital platforms highlights the potential of anonymized online peer support forums as accessible first-line avenues of support. In India, research on peer support interventions remains scarce. This study aimed to identify the concerns for which Indian youth engage in an anonymized, moderated online peer support forum, as well as the purposes for posting. A retrospective

Study protocol for a randomized trial examining a peer grief support approach for people grieving drug overdose deaths.

BACKGROUND: People bereaved by drug overdose experience a “special grief” that includes guilt, shame, and blame for their loved one’s death, which often compounds suffering and interferes with help-seeking. This population is vulnerable to poor health outcomes including prolonged grief disorder, risky substance use, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Peer grief support may reduce risks in people bereaved by overdose by buffering grievers from the negative effects of increased stigma and isolation. Peer Support Community Partners has developed the RIVER peer grief support model for bereavemen

Digital Social Technology and Social Connection in Youth.

OBJECTIVE: Digital social technologies, such as social media and online multiplayer video games (MVGs), have ushered in an era of peer relationships that evolve online, in addition to in person. This report reviews existing research about the dual role of social media and MVGs in shaping youth social connectedness, recognizing both their potential benefits and their associated risks on youth mental health. By providing evidence-based insights, it aims to inform strategies that optimize these technologies' advantages while safeguarding youth mental health and well-being. METHOD: This report re

Web-Based Forums for People Experiencing Substance Use or Gambling Disorders: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: For people experiencing substance use or gambling disorders, web-based peer-supported forums are a space where they can share their experiences, gather around a collective goal, and find mutual support. Web-based peer support can help to overcome barriers to attending face-to-face meetings by enabling people experiencing addiction to seek support beyond their physical location and with the benefit of anonymity if desired. Understanding who participates in web-based peer-supported forums (and how), and the principles underpinning forums, can also assist those interested in designing

Peer-based discrimination and adolescent emotional and sleep health: A daily examination of direct and buffering associations.

Using 10-day daily diary data collected in 2019 from 10th grade students in southern U.S. (N = 161, 57% Latina/x/o, 21% Biracial, 10% Asian, 9% White, 4% Black; 55% female, Mage  = 15.51), this study examined various forms of peer-based discrimination in adolescents' everyday lives. Results showed that personally experienced discrimination, peer racial teasing, and vicarious discrimination were frequent and impactful events. Results also provided strong evidence for the protective role of psychological resilience and some evidence for the protective-reactive roles of peer support and school cl

A Trauma-Informed Approach to Peer Physical Examination.

INTRODUCTION: The majority of medical schools utilize peer physical examination (PPE) as a teaching tool. In recent years, trauma-informed care (TIC) has been applied as a framework for physical examination to prevent patient retraumatization. Although medical students experience rates of trauma comparable to those of the general population, trauma-informed principles have not been integrated into PPE curricula. METHODS: We created a novel trauma-informed PPE (TIPPE) curriculum grounded in core principles of TIC for first-year medical students. Perceptions of safety, trust, and autonomy in PP

Turning to 'Trusted Others': A Narrative Review of Providing Social Support to First Responders.

First responders, such as paramedics and firefighters, encounter duty-related traumatic exposures, which can lead to post-traumatic stress (PTS). Although social support protects against PTS, we know little about how first responders' families, spouses/partners, friends, and care-partners (i.e., 'trusted others') provide social support. This narrative review explores support behaviors, coping strategies, and resources trusted others use to support first responders. A structured literature search yielded 24 articles. We used House's (1981) conceptual framework to inform our analysis. We identif

Where It Really Counts: Feasibility and Potential of the Peer Engaged Empowered Recovery Program for Substance-Dependent Jail Inmates.

OBJECTIVE: The Peer Engaged Empowered Recovery (PEER) program is a county collaboration between specialty behavioral health and probation departments to address substance use and related problems by providing team-based peer recovery specialist (PRS) services. The study aimed to assess the feasibility and potential effectiveness of PEER and propose recommendations. METHOD: Eligible clients released from jail had suspected substance use disorder and were assigned to the local drug court, on pretrial probation, or considered of high risk of recidivism. Clients were offered PRS support for 6 mon

The relationship between child neglect and adolescent interpersonal functioning: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Neglect is a highly prevalent, yet historically understudied form of maltreatment. Recent research has revealed the far reaching and unique effects that neglect has on subsequent cognitive, behavioural and socio-emotional development, and on long-term physical and mental health outcomes. Adolescent interpersonal functioning is important to explore given the significant relational transitions that occur during this stage of development, and the known impact that these social changes can have on future life outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review synthesises the literature explo

Peer Worker-Supported Transition from Hospital to Home-Outcomes for Service Users.

BACKGROUND: Transitioning from psychiatric hospitalisation back to community presents a period of heightened suicide, homelessness, relapse, and rehospitalisation risk. The Australian state of New South Wales established a state-wide Peer Supported Transfer of Care (Peer-STOC) initiative to enhance recovery-focused supports available during this transition period. AIMS: To understand the impacts and outcomes of the Peer-STOC program on service users from three stakeholder perspectives: service users themselves, peer worker service providers, and other mental health workers and clinicians inte

Evaluation of pushing out of children from all English state schools: Administrative data cohort study of children receiving social care and their peers.

BACKGROUND: Pushing out (off-rolling) occurs where pupils are illegally excluded from school. Those receiving children's social care (CSC) services (children in need (CiN), on child protection plans (CPPs) or looked after (CLA)) are thought to be at increased risk, but limited evidence inhibits understanding of this phenomenon. The extent of pushing out can be inferred from non-enrolment in administrative data. OBJECTIVE: To estimate proportions of children not enrolled across secondary school (aged 11-16, up to year 11) and to explore the association between CSC history and non-enrolment in

Computational approaches to understanding interaction and development.

Audio-visual recording and location tracking produce enormous quantities of digital data with which researchers can document children's everyday interactions in naturalistic settings and assessment contexts. Machine learning and other computational approaches can produce replicable, automated measurements of these big behavioral data. The economies of scale afforded by repeated automated measurements offer a potent approach to investigating linkages between real-time behavior and developmental change. In our work, automated measurement of audio from child-worn recorders-which quantify the freq

Peer-delivered services for substance use in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Addressing the burden of disease associated with substance use is a global priority, yet access to treatment is limited, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Peers, individuals with lived experience of substance use, may play an important role in expanding access to treatment, supporting outcomes, and reducing stigma. While peer-delivered services for substance use have been scaling up in high-income countries (HICs), less is known about their application in LMICs. This systematic review synthesizes the evidence of peer-delivered services for substance

Peer recovery services for persons returning from prison: Pilot randomized clinical trial investigation of SUPPORT.

Previously incarcerated persons with substance use disorder (SUD) need recovery supports, given the overrepresentation of this population in prison and community supervision. Peer support programs have the potential to fill gaps in postrelease support for persons with SUD. To assess the effectiveness of peer support approaches, this pilot study randomized access to peer recovery coaches within a well-established community reentry program. We examined several proximal outcomes to determine potential mechanisms of action, along with several exploratory outcomes. While attrition due to re-incarce
