Psychological pathways linking discrimination to alcohol and marijuana use among LGB young adults during the 2024 presidential election.

During the 2024 US presidential election, a surge in anti-lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) rhetoric contributed to a hostile political climate that intensified the psychological impact of discrimination among LGB young adults. Drawing from minority stress theory and the psychological mediation framework (PMF), exposure to LGBT discrimination may be linked to greater substance use through intrapersonal (sexual orientation rumination and hopelessness) and interpersonal (interpersonal political tension) processes. However, little is known about these indirect pathways and whether they vary as a f

Psychosocial factors in risk of cervical intraepithelial lesions.

BACKGROUND: This study examines the relationship among psychosocial factors, behavioral risks for abnormal cervical cytology, and abnormal cervical cytology. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was used to measure perceived stress, discrimination, lifetime stressful events, optimism, social support, and psychological state. Women with normal Pap smears attending a primary care clinic and women attending a colposcopy clinic because of an abnormal Pap smear were eligible. The scores between the two groups were compared. RESULTS: A total of 265 women participated in the study. There were

Everyday discrimination among formerly homeless persons in permanent supportive housing.

Experiences of discrimination are associated with poor health and are particularly common among persons experiencing homelessness. Permanent supportive housing (PSH) provides a foundation for improved well-being among persons with homelessness histories, but research on discrimination among this population is lacking. We examined changes in experiences of, and perceived reasons for, everyday discrimination when persons moved into PSH. 421 adults in Los Angeles County completed baseline (pre-housing), 3-, 6- or 12-month post-housing structured interviews. Generalized linear mixed models (GLMM)

Racial and Ethnic Discrimination, Medical Mistrust, and Satisfaction with Birth Control Services among Young Adult Latinas.

BACKGROUND: Racial/ethnic discrimination and medical mistrust contribute to disparities in use of and satisfaction with health care services. Previous work examining the influence of discrimination and medical mistrust on health care experiences has focused primarily on African Americans. Despite the finding that Latinas report lower rates of contraceptive use than White women, little is known about the influence of these factors on health care satisfaction, specifically satisfaction with contraceptive services, among Latina women. METHODS: We conducted computer-assisted interviews with 254 L

The role of discrimination in alcohol-related problems in samples of heavy drinking HIV-negative and positive men who have sex with men (MSM).

BACKGROUND: Heavy drinking is a major public health concern among men who have sex with men (MSM), as it is in many other populations. However, the consequences of heavy drinking among MSM may be particularly severe, especially for sexual risk behavior, due to the relatively high prevalence of HIV. Minority stress models suggest that, among members of marginalized groups, discrimination may be associated with heavier alcohol use as these individuals increasingly drink to cope with such experiences. Past studies have provided some support for this association. However, they have not explored th

Facing Bias, Finding Escape: How Indian American Youth Turn to E-Cigarettes as a Coping Mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have given attention to the relationship between experiences of perceived discrimination, negative context of reception (e.g., hostility toward a particular group), and e-cigarette use among Indian American youth. This brief explored the predictors of lifetime e-cigarette use among a cross-sectional cohort of Indian American youth. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was administered to Indian American youth (N = 223) ages 12 to 17. Bivariate screening was performed, and each variable with a significant bivariate correlation with lifetime e-cigarette use was included in

Discrimination in healthcare settings among adults with recent HIV diagnoses.

The prevalence of discrimination in healthcare settings among HIV patients in the United States is unknown. The Medical Monitoring Project (MMP) is a complex sample survey of adults receiving HIV medical care in the United States. We analyzed nationally representative MMP data collected 2011-2015. We assessed the prevalence of self-reported healthcare discrimination, perceived reasons for discrimination, and factors associated with discrimination among persons with HIV diagnoses ≤5 years before interview (n = 3,770). Overall, 14.1% of patients living with HIV (PLWH) experienced discrimination,

Social Epidemiological Mediators of Rural and Urban Differences in Perceived Need for Cocaine Use Treatment.

Rural/urban disparities in cocaine use treatment are commonly attributed to variations in social epidemiological constructs, such as socioeconomic status and well-being, social capital and support, and discrimination, as well as health care attitudes and health beliefs. This study examined whether these factors mediate rural vs. urban disparities in perceived need for cocaine use treatment, a concept closely linked to treatment utilization. Data were collected from 200 rural and 200 urban African American/Black persons who were active cocaine users and not in treatment. A multiple mediation mo

Individual attitudes and perceived social norms: Reports on HIV/AIDS-related stigma among service providers in China.

This study examined HIV/AIDS-related stigma among Chinese service providers by comparing their personal attitudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS with their perception of social norms related to people living with HIV/AIDS. We randomly selected three provincial hospitals, four city/prefecture hospitals, 10 county hospitals,18 township health clinics, and 54 village clinics from Yunnan, China. Doctors and nurses were randomly sampled proportionally to the doctor–nurse ratio of each hospital or clinic. Lab technicians were over-sampled in order to include an adequate representation in the ana

Activity in perirhinal and entorhinal cortex predicts perceived visual similarities among category exemplars with highest precision.

Vision neuroscience has made great strides in understanding the hierarchical organization of object representations along the ventral visual stream (VVS). How VVS representations capture fine-grained visual similarities between objects that observers subjectively perceive has received limited examination so far. In the current study, we addressed this question by focussing on perceived visual similarities among subordinate exemplars of real-world categories. We hypothesized that these perceived similarities are reflected with highest fidelity in neural activity patterns downstream from inferot

Stigmatization is common in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and correlates with quality of life.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Stigmatization is a well-documented problem of some diseases. Perceived stigma is common in alcohol-related liver disease and hepatitis C, but little information exists on stigma in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Aim of the study was to investigate frequency and characteristics of perceived stigma among patients with NAFLD. METHODS: One-hundred and ninety-seven patients seen at the liver clinic were included: a study group of 144 patients with NAFLD, 50 with cirrhosis (34 compensated, 16 decompensated), and a control group of 53 patients with alc

Cognitive-Affective Factors Linking Experiences of Daily Discrimination with Adult Psychopathology and Risky Health Behaviors.

Although a growing literature describes an association between experiences of discrimination and health behaviors, the factors that help maintain this relationship remain incompletely characterized. The current study investigated how interpersonal discrimination relates cross-sectionally to cognitive-affective processes and health behaviors in a diverse sample of 250 community adults aged 18-54 (M/SD = 30.47/9.67). A path analysis revealed that, as the frequency of discrimination increased, so did disruptions in emotional processes, current symptoms of psychopathology, and risky health behavio

Examining associations among daily discrimination, psychosocial risk factors, and pain outcomes in people with chronic low back pain.

INTRODUCTION: Substantial evidence suggests that experiences of discrimination negatively influence sleep, depressive symptoms, stress, and pain. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the strength of the associations between discrimination and pain, and to determine which psychosocial risk factors help explain these associations. METHODS: Participants (N = 208) underwent two study sessions, where they completed the Everyday Discrimination Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, Centers for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, and the Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form. Discrimination and well-being amongst the homeless: the role of multiple group membership.

The homeless are a vulnerable population in many respects. Those experiencing homelessness not only experience personal and economic hardship they also frequently face discrimination and exclusion because of their housing status. Although past research has shown that identifying with multiple groups can buffer against the negative consequences of discrimination on well-being, it remains to be seen whether such strategies protect well-being of people who are homeless. We investigate this issue in a longitudinal study of 119 individuals who were homeless. The results showed that perceived group-
