Larvae of the Juan Fernández Splendid Perch, Callanthias platei Steindachner, 1898 (Teleostei: Callanthiidae), are described for the first time. The five available specimens, ranging from 3 mm notochord length (NL) to 6.1 mm standard length (SL), were collected with plankton nets near Desventuradas Islands, Southeast Pacific, during the austral spring of 2015 and 2016. The larvae are deep bodied with a narrow caudal peduncle, a large head and a triangular, coiled gut. The pigmentation is scarce in preflexion larvae but increases after flexion. All individuals have several groups of head spines

Response of orange-finned anemonefish Amphiprion chrysopterus and three-spot damselfish Dascyllus trimaculatus to red laser-pointer light was studied in Mo'orea, French Polynesia. Four magnificent anemones Heteractis magnifica and their resident fish were observed for typical behaviours (biting, chasing, hiding, posing, lunging and retreating) with and without exposure to laser-pointer light. Lunging behaviour increased significantly for both fish species upon exposure to laser-pointer light; none of the other behaviours changed significantly. We advance the hypothesis that orange-finned anemo

Despite considerable study, mystery surrounds the use of signals that initiate cooperative hunting in animals. Using a labyrinth test chamber, we examined whether a lionfish, Dendrochirus zebra, would initiate cooperative hunts with piscine partners. We found that D. zebra uses a stereotyped flared fin display to alert conspecific and heterospecific lionfish species Pterois antennata to the presence of prey. Per capita success rate was significantly higher for cooperative hunters when compared with solitary ones, with hunt responders assisting hunt initiators in cornering the prey using their

The leopard grouper is an endemic species of the Mexican Pacific with an important commercial fishery and good aquaculture potential. In order to assess the digestive capacity of this species during the larval period and aid in the formulation of adequate weaning diets, this study aimed to characterize the ontogeny of digestive enzymes during development of the digestive system. Digestive enzymes trypsin, chymotrypsin, acid protease, leucine-alanine peptidase, alkaline phosphatase, aminopeptidase N, lipase, amylase and maltase were quantified in larvae fed live prey and weaned onto a formulate

High-energy wavelengths in the ultraviolet-B (UVB, 280-315 nm) and the UVA (315-400-nm) portion of the spectrum are harmful to terrestrial and aquatic organisms. Interestingly, UVA is also involved in the repair of UV induced damage. Organisms living in shallow coral reef environments possess UV absorbing compounds, such as mycosporine-like amino acids, to protect them from UV radiation. While it has been demonstrated that exposure to UV (280-400 nm) affects the UV absorbance of fish mucus, whether the effects of UV exposure vary between UVB and UVA wavelengths is not known. Therefore, we inve

Skin lesions and spring mortality events of smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu and selected other species were first noted in the South Branch of the Potomac River in 2002. Since that year morbidity and mortality have also been observed in the Shenandoah and Monocacy rivers. Despite much research, no single pathogen, parasite, or chemical cause for the lesions and mortality has been identified. Numerous parasites, most commonly trematode metacercariae and myxozoans; the bacterial pathogens Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas salmonicida, and Flavobacterium columnare; and largemouth bass virus ha

Increasing pollution in water bodies is directly or indirectly related to increasing urbanization and indiscriminate disposal of agrochemical & industrial effluents. Heavy metals are one of the important categories of such pollutants and are causing serious hazards to non target species (Mwachiro and Druve1997). Their salts constitute a serious type of pollution in fresh water and being stable compounds; they are not readily removed by oxidation, precipitation or other processes and affect the activity in recipient animal (Jagadeesan and Vijayalakshmi 1998). Increase in the concentration of he

In the present paper, species of the Proteocephalus-aggregate de Chambrier, Zehnder, Vaucher, and Mariaux, 2004 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) reported from centrarchid and percid fishes in North America are reviewed, and their taxonomic status is critically assessed based on a study of type specimens and new material from Canada and the United States. The following 3 species, supposedly strictly specific to their fish definitive hosts, are recognized as valid: (1) Proteocephalus fluviatilis Bangham, 1925 (new synonyms Proteocephalus osburni Bangham, 1925 and Proteocephalus microcephalus Haderlie

Kisspeptins are now considered key players in the neuroendocrine control of puberty and reproduction, at least in mammals. Most teleosts have two kiss genes, kiss1 and kiss2, but their sites of expression are still poorly documented. As a first step in investigating the role of kisspeptins in the European sea bass, a perciform fish, we studied the distribution of kiss1 and kiss2-expressing cells in the brain of males and females undergoing their first sexual maturation. Animals were examined at early and late in the reproductive season. We also examined the putative expression of estrogen rece

It is known that iron is deposited in the enameloid of some teleost fishes, although its biological significance has not been clarified. In the present investigation, a quantitative analysis of iron in the enameloid of fishes of a primitive suborder, the Balistoidei, and an advanced suborder, the Tetra-odontoidei, of the Tetra-odontiformes of marine teleosts was performed by means of the electron microprobe. The results indicated that the enameloid of Balistoidei contained from 0.4-13.5% iron at its surface layer, whereas that of Tetra-odontoidei was very low in iron, which could not be discri

The present study was undertaken to investigate the possible effects of Fe and trace element exposure on hepatic levels of retinoids in seven fish species. Concentrations of retinoids were measured in fish collected from a coastal lagoon in Brazil that receives effluents from an iron-ore mining and processing plant. Fish from nearby coastal lagoons were also included to assess possible differences related to chemical exposure. Results indicated considerable differences in hepatic retinoid composition among the various species investigated. The most striking differences were in retinol and deri

Based on previous molecular phylogenetic analyses, Bothriocestus n. gen. is erected to accommodate bothriocephalid tapeworms that have an elongate scolex, a well-developed apical disc, and a narrow neck region, parasitize freshwater fishes in the Holarctic, and were previously placed in the polyphyletic genus Bothriocephalus Rudolphi, 1808 (Cestoda: Bothriocephalidea). Bothriocestus claviceps (Goeze, 1782) n. comb., a parasite of eels (Anguilla spp.) in the Holarctic region, is designated as the type species. Another species of the new genus, Bothriocestus cuspidatus (Cooper, 1917) (syn. Bothr

Thermal effluents from coastal nuclear power plants (NPPs) typically raise near-field seawater temperatures by 2-4 °C for several hours to days, imposing thermal stress on local marine biota. This study investigates the biochemical and molecular responses of juvenile large yellow croaker Larimichthys crocea to acute thermal stress, simulating the thermal discharges from coastal NPPs. Fish were exposed to 28 °C (control), 29 °C, 30 °C, and 32 °C, with sampling conducted at 24 h and 96 h. At 32 °C, all fish died within 48 h, while exposure to 29 °C and 30 °C for 96 h induced oxidative stress in

Lane snapper Lutjanus synagris is an important species that supports both commercial and recreational fisheries. In the southern Gulf of Mexico, lane snapper is one of the snapper species with the highest annual catch volumes. Nevertheless, information on several life-history traits such as longevity, natural mortality and age at maturity is lacking, which are important for providing appropriate management options. From the total captured lane snapper (n = 1150), 367 were used to estimate the age-life history. Specimens were captured through the small-scale fleet of Yucatan from 2008 to 2009 i

Analysing the development of a digestive system and enzyme activity is crucial for understanding the digestive physiology of larval fish and determining optimal feeding practices. The white-barred goby (Amblygobius phalaena), a popular marine ornamental fish, has established breeding and larval rearing techniques, but research on its digestive physiology remains limited, which is essential for enhancing commercial production efficiency. This study aimed to elucidate the histological structure of the digestive tract and changes in enzyme activity in white-barred goby larvae to understand the pr

The yellow drum (Nibea albiflora), a pivotal species within the Sciaenidae family, is economically important in the mariculture along the coastal regions of China. A comprehensive understanding gonadal maturation and spawning processes is crucial for seed production in the artificial propagation of yellow drum. This study investigates serum hormonal fluctuations, gonadal histological features, sex hormone receptor gene expression, and intestinal microbiota composition in both male and female yellow drum during the reproductive season. Twenty individuals were sampled from reproductive stages IV

The early developmental transition from endogenous to exogenous feeding is a critical period in carnivorous fish larvae, often associated with high mortality rates in aquaculture. Although trypsin, a key protease in protein digestion, is hypothesized to play a pivotal role in initiating exogenous feeding, the expression dynamics and functional contributions of trypsin and isoforms during early development remain poorly characterized in carnivorous species. This study explores the critical role of trypsin in the early feeding process of carnivorous fish, using mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi)
