Memory and language impairments are associated with anxiety disorder severity in childhood.

Introduction Children with anxiety disorders have been suggested to possess deficits in verbal fluency, shifting and attention, with inconsistent results regarding working memory and its subcomponents. This study extends previous findings by analyzing the performance of children with anxiety disorders in a wide range of neuropsychological functions. Methods We evaluated 54 children with a primary diagnosis of an anxiety disorder according to diagnostic criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) using subtests of a neuropsychological battery. The Effect of Previous Exposure on Virtual Reality Induced Public Speaking Anxiety: A Physiological and Behavioral Study.

Public speaking anxiety (PSA) is defined as a strong distress when performing a speech in front of an audience, causing impairment in terms of work possibilities and social relationships. Audience behavior and feedback received during a speech are a crucial variable to induce PSA, affecting performance and perception. In this study, two different virtual reality public speaking scenarios were developed to investigate the impact of positive (more assertive) versus negative (more hostile) audience behavior regarding perceived anxiety and physiological arousal during performance. Moreover, the pr

Prenatal nicotine exposure increases anxiety and modifies sensorimotor integration behaviors in adult female mice.

Prenatal exposure to nicotine (PNE) has been associated with a myriad of physiological, cognitive, and behavioral effects in the developing offspring. In this study, CD-1 dams were given injections of nicotine or control vehicle throughout gestation and their offspring were raised to 6 months of age. Adult mice were administered a battery of behavioral tests (the Suok test, the elevated platform test, and the elevated plus maze test) to assess anxiety and sensorimotor integration. PNE resulted in a decreased likelihood of jumping during the elevated platform test and decreased directed explora

The impact of depression, anxiety and comorbidity on occupational outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression account for considerable cost to organizations, driven by both presenteeism (reduced performance due to attending work while ill) and absenteeism. Most research has focused on the impact of depression, with less attention given to anxiety and comorbid presentations. AIMS: To explore the cross-sectional relationship between depression and anxiety (individually and comorbidly) on workplace performance and sickness absence. METHODS: As part of a larger study to evaluate a mental health app, 4953 working Australians were recruited. Participants completed in-app

Induced-anxiety differentially disrupts working memory in generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety is characterized by a bias towards threatening information, anxious apprehension, and disrupted concentration. Previous research in healthy subjects suggests that working memory (WM) is disrupted by induced anxiety, but that increased task-demand reduces anxiety and WM is preserved. However, it is unknown if patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) can similarly normalize their performance on difficult WM tasks while reducing their anxiety. Increased threat-related bias and impoverished top-down control in trait anxiety suggests that patients may not reap the same c

Why I tense up when you watch me: Inferior parietal cortex mediates an audience's influence on motor performance.

The presence of an evaluative audience can alter skilled motor performance through changes in force output. To investigate how this is mediated within the brain, we emulated real-time social monitoring of participants' performance of a fine grip task during functional magnetic resonance neuroimaging. We observed an increase in force output during social evaluation that was accompanied by focal reductions in activity within bilateral inferior parietal cortex. Moreover, deactivation of the left inferior parietal cortex predicted both inter- and intra-individual differences in socially-induced ch

The effects of social evaluation and looming threat on self-attentional biases and social anxiety.

This paper examines how two proposed cognitive vulnerabilities of social anxiety, the fear of negative evaluation, and looming cognitive style may combine with socially demanding situations in predicting social anxiety symptoms and performance deficits. Fifty-two individuals previously identified as possessing these two cognitive vulnerabilities were randomly assigned to conditions in a 2 (high versus low social evaluation)x2 (high versus low temporal looming) experimental design. Significant interaction effects were found for: (a) residual change in anxiety symptoms from baseline level, and (

Trait anxiety and neural efficiency of abstract reasoning: An fMRI investigation.

Worries preoccupy the working memory capacity in anxious individuals, thereby affecting their performance during tasks that require efficient attention regulation. According to the attentional control theory (ACT), trait anxiety affects the processing efficiency, i.e. the effort required for task performance, more than the accuracy of task performance. We investigated the relation between trait anxiety and neural response for a reasoning task in healthy subjects. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was carried out on 22 healthy participants and blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD)

Correlations among measures of response to benzodiazepines in man.

A retrospective analysis of five studies using benzodiazepines and one using a benzodiazepine-like drug, zopiclone, and involving 61 subjects in toto was carried out. All used a placebo control and all acute studies incorporated pre-treatment values as well. Eight variables which have previously been shown to be sensitive to benzodiazepine action and which covered a range of physiological, psychological and subjective measures were chosen. Within-subject correlations between drug minus placebo values for these variables were computed to examine relationships between the measures while the subj

Affective Disturbance and Neurocognitive Variability in College Athletes.

OBJECTIVE: Research on the neurocognitive effects of comorbid mood/anxiety disturbance in college athletes is limited. Previous research found that athletes with comorbid depression/anxiety performed worse on measures of attention/processing speed (A/PS) at baseline compared to healthy controls. However, this work solely examined mean performance. The current study expands upon this work by examining intraindividual variability (IIV) in relation to affective disturbance. METHOD: 835 (M = 624, F = 211) collegiate athletes completed baseline neuropsychological testing. Athletes were separated i

Self-confidence and perceived fatigue as predictors of performance satisfaction in trained swimmers.

INTRODUCTION: Pre-competitive anxiety and self-confidence are key psychological factors influencing athletic performance. While anxiety was traditionally seen as harmful, recent biopsychosocial models suggest its effects depend on athletes' interpretation of arousal and their confidence level. This study examined whether pre-competitive self-confidence and perceived fatigue predicted post-competition satisfaction and results in trained youth swimmers, considering differences between individual and team formats. METHODS: The sample consisted of 147 trained swimmers of national level (70 males

Factor structure of social fears: The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale.

In the assessment of social anxiety, investigators often differentiate between social interactional anxiety and performance anxiety. The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS), a clinician-administered measure of social anxiety and avoidance, was originally developed with separate subscales for the assessment of fear and avoidance of situations involving social interaction and performance/observation by others. Separate confirmatory factor analyses of the LSAS fear and avoidance ratings demonstrated that this two-factor model did not provide an adequate fit to the data, suggesting the need to f

Latent Profiles of Academic Anxiety and Working Memory in Adults with Varying Dyslexia-Related Risk.

This study examined whether adults with varying levels of dyslexia-related risk show distinct profiles of academic anxiety and working memory functioning. Dyslexia-related risk was assessed with the corrected Chinese Adult Reading History Questionnaire (Chinese-ARHQ). Latent profile analysis was conducted using reading anxiety, mathematics anxiety, a digit-span working memory composite, and operation span as profile indicators. Corrected Chinese-ARHQ scores were then compared across the retained profiles as an external variable, and a sensitivity analysis was conducted in the elevated dyslexia

Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Revisited.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) from an official recognition as a residual category in DSM-III has come a long way to be appreciated as a common underlying anxiety pathway in the literature. Despite still being defined as extreme anxiety and worry upon performance and about one's health, GAD seems to be a general umbrella of anxiety, covering even social anxiety and panic disorder (PD) and even when not treated and chronic, leading to major depressive disorder (MDD). Along the line of some other similar studies and contentions, in the present study we sought to validate the hypothesis of GA

Affective differences in Iowa Gambling Task performance associated with sexual risk taking and substance use among HIV-positive and HIV-negative men who have sex with men.

We investigated the relationship between emotional distress and decision making in sexual risk and substance use behavior among 174 (ages 25 to 50 years, 53% black) men who have sex with men (MSM), a population at increased risk for HIV. The sample was stratified by HIV status. Measures of affective decision making, depression, anxiety, sex acts, and substance use during the past 60 days were collected at our research center. Negative binomial regression models were used to examine the relationship between age, HIV status, anxiety, depression, and IGT performance in the prediction of number of

Reward and punishment learning among people with a lifetime history of anxiety, depression, and substance use disorder.

Reward and punishment learning are critical across multiple clinical populations. The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is frequently used to assess these constructs and multiple forms of psychopathology are associated with IGT performance. However, it is not clear whether alterations in IGT performance are general to psychopathology or specific to different forms of psychopathology. Thus, we examined whether IGT performance was uniquely predicted by anxiety, depression, and substance use disorder. We tested a sample of adults (N = 293) on the play-or-pass version of the IGT. We characterized behavior

Intracerebroventricular administration of sulphated cholecystokinin octapeptide induces anxiety-like behaviour in goldfish.

Sulphated cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8s) is involved in feeding regulation as an anorexigenic neuropeptide in vertebrates. In rodents, i.c.v. administration of CCK-8s has been shown to affect not only feeding behaviour, but also psychomotor activity. However, there is still no information available concerning the psychophysiological effects of CCK-8s in goldfish. Therefore, in the present study, we examined the effect of synthetic goldfish (gf) CCK-8s on psychomotor activity in this species. Intracerebroventricular administration of gfCCK-8s at 0.1, 0.5 and 2.5 pmol g-1 body weight (BW)

Attention bias and anxiety in young children exposed to family violence.

BACKGROUND: Attention bias toward threat is associated with anxiety in older youth and adults and has been linked with violence exposure. Attention bias may moderate the relationship between violence exposure and anxiety in young children. Capitalizing on measurement advances, this study examines these relationships at a younger age than previously possible. METHODS: Young children (mean age 4.7, ±0.8) from a cross-sectional sample oversampled for violence exposure (N = 218) completed the dot-probe task to assess their attention biases. Observed fear/anxiety was characterized with a novel obs

Therapist activities preceding setbacks in the assimilation process.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the therapist activities immediately preceding assimilation setbacks in the treatment of a good-outcome client treated with linguistic therapy of evaluation (LTE). METHOD: Setbacks (N = 105) were defined as decreases of one or more assimilation stages from one passage to the next dealing with the same theme. The therapist activities immediately preceding those setbacks were classified using two kinds of codes: (a) therapist interventions and (b) positions the therapist took toward the client's internal voices. RESULTS: Preceding setbacks to early assimilation s
