A Comparative Study Between Porcine Peritoneum and Pericardium as Cardiovascular Material.

Decellularized porcine pericardium has many applications in the cardiovascular field for its excellent properties. The peritoneum is a single-layer bio-dialysis membrane with many similarities and differences in physical characteristics, biochemical composition, and structure to the pericardium. The limited available literature suggests that, similar to the pericardium, the peritoneum has good application potential in the field of cardiovascular substitute materials. This research focused on comparing the differences between decellularized peritoneum and decellularized pericardium in microstru

Influence of inflammation and cardiac hypertrophy on mechanical properties of human pericardium.

Different devices for mechanical circulatory support (MCS) have been developed for the treatment of refractory cardiogenic shock. However, all of them are associated with direct blood contact, the need for anticoagulation and bleeding complications. To overcome these limitations the pericardial sac got into the focus as a promising implantation site for MCS. For this purpose, further knowledge about the mechanical properties of human pericardium is required. In this prospective, monocentric, experimental pilot study 56 samples of human pericardium were extracted postmortem from 13 critically i

Air gun injury to the pericardium in a 9-year-old boy.

The authors present the case of a 9-year-old boy who sustained a gunshot injury to the pericardium by an air gun. The penetrative wound to the pericardium was, according to the performed pre-operative diagnostic methods, initially believed to be a penetrative wound into the cardiophrenic angle of the left pleural cavity. The stabilized patient was indicated for an extraction of the projectile through a left anterior minithoracotomy, during which the projectile was found and successfully removed from the pericardium. The limits of pre-operative assessment, optimal treatment procedures, and surg

Absent pericardium and lung hypoplasia in a child with severe mitral regurgitation.

An 8-year-old girl with severe mitral regurgitation presented with symptoms of heart failure. Clinical investigations did not raise suspicion of an absent left pericardium. Congenital defects of the pericardium are rare and frequently associated with other cardiac lesions. We describe a case of severe mitral regurgitation in a child in whom an absent left-sided pericardium with hypoplasia of left lung was found incidentally during surgery to repair the mitral valve. We believe such associations with other heart diseases is usually circumstantial but can influence the perioperative morbidity, l

[Rupture of an Aneurysm of the Right Sinus of Valsalva Into the Pericardium;Report of a Case].

A sinus of Valsalva aneurysm is an uncommon cardiac anomaly. The aneurysm usually ruptures into the cardiac cavity, and rupture into the pericardial cavity is unusual. A 69-year-old man was admitted to our hospital after collapse due to cardiac tamponade. Computed tomography revealed a ruptured right sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (5 cm) with massive pericardial effusion. The right coronary artery arose from the aneurysm. Severe aortic regurgitation due to the lack of coaptation of the valves was detected by echocardiography. Emergency patch closure of the aneurysm orifice, aortic valve replacemen

Enhanced CT and FDG PET/CT in Histiocytic Sarcoma of the Pericardium.

Histiocytic sarcoma is an extremely rare and aggressive malignant neoplasm of presumed hematopoietic origin. Lymph nodes are the most common sites of involvement. A variety of extranodal sites can be involved, particularly the gastrointestinal tract, soft tissue, skin, and spleen. Radiologic findings of histiocytic sarcoma have been rarely reported. We present a case with histiocytic sarcoma in pericardium, which is an unusual site. Enhanced chest CT showed remarkable enhancement of the tumor. On FDG PET/CT, the tumor showed intense FDG uptake.

[Congenital Defect of the Left Pericardium with Spontaneous Pneumothorax;Report of a Case].

Congenital cardiac membrane deficiency is a relatively rare condition. Here, we report a case of congenital cardiac membrane deficiency that manifested as left spontaneous pneumothorax. A 72-year-old man was hospitalized for recurrence of the spontaneous pneumothorax. Computed tomography findings led us to suspect pericardial deficits, and the perioperative findings during thoracoscopic surgery for the pneumothorax confirmed complete absence of the left pericardium. We resected a lung cyst but did not treat the pericardial deficit. The patient's postoperative course was uneventful.

Rosai-Dorfman disease of the pericardium: a case report and review of literature.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is an uncommon histiocytic disease of unknown etiology. It typically presents as massive lymphadenopathy with a predilection for the cervical lymph nodes of children and young adults. However, extranodal involvement is not uncommon and may cause confusion with other neoplasms or reactive disease. We describe here a unique case of extranodal RDD manifesting as a pericardial mass in a 69-year-old man. The lesion was detected by computed tomography during a periodic examination of the chest. Subsequently positron emission tomography scan showed mild increase of flurode

Reconstruction of bicuspid aortic valve with autologous pericardium--usefulness of tricuspidization.

BACKGROUND: This study describes the surgical treatment of bicuspid aortic valve with original aortic valve reconstruction. METHODS AND RESULTS: Aortic valve reconstruction was done in 102 patients with bicuspid aortic valve from April 2007 through September 2011. Thirty-four patients with ascending aortic diameter >45 mm underwent hemi-arch aortic replacement concomitantly. Seventy-seven patients had aortic stenosis, and 25 had aortic regurgitation (AR). Mean age was 63.7±10.0 years old. There were 55 men and 47 women. Harvested pericardium is treated with 0.6% glutaraldehyde solution. The d

Congenital partial defect of the left pericardium presenting as chest pain.

Congenital pericardial defect is a rare cardiac defect with variable clinical presentations. It is usually an unexpected finding during cardiac surgery or autopsy. The clinical detection of congenital absence of pericardium is important because of its life-threatening complications such as fatal myocardial strangulation, myocardial ischaemia and sudden death. We present a patient with the incidental finding of left-sided partial defect of the pericardium during evaluation of chest pain.

Cystic lymphangioma of pericardium presenting as isolated chylopericardium - a case report.

Isolated chylopericardium due to cystic lymphangioma of pericardium is a rare entity. We report a case of asymptomatic chylopericardium in a young male who presented with cardiomegaly. Echocardiography revealed massive pericardial effusion without tamponade. Pericardiocentesis yielded 1.25 L of tea-colored fluid which showed triglyceride level of 1723 mg/dL and cholesterol of 1021 mg/dL with a cholesterol to triglyceride ratio of <1, characteristic of chylous fluid. Lymphoscintigraphy using 99Tc demonstrated lymphatic leak around the heart region. Fusion of MRI images with lymphoscintigraphy w

A simple method of aortic valve reconstruction with fixed pericardium in children.

Aortic valve reconstruction with fixed pericardium may occasionally be very useful when treating children with aortic valve disease. This is because diseased aortic valves in children are sometimes too dysmorphic for simple repair without the addition of material, their annulus may be too small for a prosthesis, and the Ross operation may be precluded due to other congenital anomalies such as pulmonary valvar or coronary malformations. Such reconstruction is usually technically demanding and requires much precision. We describe a simple alternative method, which we have carried out in 3 patien

Desmoplastic malignant mesothelioma of the pericardium: Description of a case and review of the literature.

Desmoplastic mesothelioma (DMM) is a rare and highly lethal subtype of diffuse malignant mesothelioma and is often difficult to distinguish from reactive pleural fibrosis. The term "desmoplastic" refers to the growth of fibrous or connective tissue. We report the clinical, radiological, and pathological features of a primary DMM of the pericardium and a short review of the literature. A 72-year-old man was admitted presenting shortness of breath, cough, and asthenia. Computed tomography scan showed thickenings and effusions both in the pleura and in the pericardium. Histopathological diagnosis

Early and midterm results of repair of Ebstein's anomaly with autologous pericardium.

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of Ebstein's anomaly represents a major challenge. METHODS: Thirty consecutive patients with Ebstein's anomaly received surgical treatment in the period from April 2002 to October 2009. Operations included annuloplasty, repair of the tricuspid valve using autologous pericardium and tricuspid valve replacement. In most cases, repair of the tricuspid valve was done using autologous pericardium instead of an annuloplasty with the anterior leaflet alone. Associated congenital malformations were also repaired during the operation. Follow-up ranged from 6 to 82 m

Congenital partial absence of the left pericardium associated with tricuspid regurgitation.

We report the case of a 47-year-old man who presented with several episodes of left precordial pain, one of which had been severe, but was unrelated to exertion or posture. Transthoracic echocardiography and cardiovascular magnetic resonance showed evidence of congenital partial absence of the left pericardium and severe tricuspid regurgitation. Both diagnoses were confirmed at surgery when the pericardial defect was repaired and the tricuspid valve was replaced at the same operation. He went on to make a good recovery.

[Malignant mesothelioma of the pericardium. An anatomo-clinical study of 10 cases].

Ten pericardial mesotheliomas (8 of which had associated unilateral pleural involvement) were observed over a 22 year period in subjects over 50 years of age. The diagnosis was only confirmed several months after the presenting symptoms (shortness of breath, chest pain), usually by histological studies of pericardial biopsies performed during construction of a pleuro-pericardial window because of tamponade or of pleural biopsy in cases of pleuro-pericardial disease. There is no specific diagnostic feature and even modern imaging methods are unable to distinguish mesothelioma from pericardial t
