During the first 12 years of operation the perinatal mortality rate in Paisley Maternity Hospital fell steadily from 27 per 1,000 in 1970 to 10 per 1,000 in 1981. During this period the nulliparous birth rate remained constant, but the parous birth rate fell. Improved survival of premature babies, falling numbers of babies with neural tube defects and reduction in intrapartum asphyxia are identified as responsible for this fall. Unexplained intra-uterine death remains an unsolved problem.

Perinatal mortality (late fetal deaths at 28 completed weeks of gestation or more and early neonatal deaths under age 7 days) can be an indicator of the quality of health care before, during, and after delivery, and of the health status of the nation (1,2). The U.S. perinatal mortality rate declined 30% from 1990 to 2011, but was stable from 2011 through 2016 (1,3,4). This report presents trends in perinatal mortality as well as its components, late fetal and early neonatal mortality, for 2017 through 2019. Also shown are perinatal mortality trends by mother's age, race and Hispanic origin, an

This study investigated factors associated with perinatal mortality in São Luís, Maranhão, Northeastern Brazil. Data on perinatal mortality were obtained from the BRISA birth cohort and from the Mortality Information System, including records of 5,236 births, 70 of which referred to fetal deaths and 36 to early neonatal deaths. Factors associated with mortality were investigated using a hierarchical logistic regression model, resulting in a perinatal mortality coefficient equal to 20.2 per thousand births. Mothers with low education level and without a partner were associated with an increased

PROBLEM: Suboptimal care contributes to perinatal mortality rates. Quality-of-care audits can be used to identify and change suboptimal care, but it is not known if such audits have reduced perinatal mortality in South Africa.
APPROACH: We investigated perinatal mortality trends in health facilities that had completed at least five years of quality-of-care audits. In a subset of facilities that began audits from 2006, we analysed modifiable factors that may have contributed to perinatal deaths.
LOCAL SETTING: Since the 1990s, the perinatal problem identification programme has performed quali

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with perinatal mortality in northeastern Tanzania.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
SETTING: Northeastern Tanzania. Population. 872 mothers and their newborns.
METHODS: Pregnant women were screened for factors possibly associated with perinatal mortality, including preeclampsia, small-for-gestational age, preterm delivery, anemia, and health-seeking behavior. Fetal growth was monitored using ultrasound. Finally, the specific causes of the perinatal deaths were evaluated.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Perinatal mortality.
RESULTS: Forty-six deaths occurre

AIM: The aim of this study is to review the epidemiological literature from the past 27 years on social inequality in fetal and perinatal mortality in the Nordic countries in order to examine whether social inequalities in fetal and perinatal mortality exist, and whether there are differences between the countries.
METHODS: The databases MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched for Nordic epidemiological studies published between January 1980 and August 2007 about the association between social indicators and the outcomes spontaneous abortion, stillbirth or perinatal mortality. Thirty-five studies th

OBJECTIVES: Our purpose was to describe the effects of serious obstetric complications on maternal and perinatal outcome in pregnancies complicated by Hellp syndrome.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
PATIENTS: Sixteen patients managed from January 1994 through December 1998 in whom pregnancy was complicated by Hellp Syndrome.
RESULTS: The incidence of Hellp syndrome among women with severe preeclampsia and/or eclampsia (164 cases) was 9.7%. Fourteen cases occurred before and two after delivery. In nine cases, Hellp occurred before 32 weeks of gestation and later in two other cases. Mean g

Data from birth records and death certificates were used retrospectively to determine the risk factors associated with perinatal mortality in twin pregnancy at Mansa General Hospital between 1 August 1993 and 31 July 1995. A total of 3091 singleton births, 128 sets of twins, and three sets of triplets was recorded during the study period with a twinning rate of 4 per cent of the total deliveries. Perinatal mortality in twin gestation was high (141/1000) and affected mostly the second twin (72 per cent). The main risk factors associated with perinatal mortality in twin pregnancy were birthweigh

Close consanguineous unions continue to be extremely common in much of West Asia, including Pakistan. However, the impact of inbreeding on offspring mortality, particularly perinatal mortality, remains poorly documented. This paper attempts to measure the mortality risks associated with consanguinity and inbreeding while controlling for the effects of other potential confounders. The study sample comprises a multi-ethnic population residing in selected squatter settlements of Karachi. The adjusted odds ratio for perinatal mortality in the offspring of women married to their first cousins was 2

In our study we have 313 cases--100 cases as a control group and 213 cases as a diabetic group. Different types of pregnancy outcome have been studied in these cases (perinatal mortality rate and perinatal morbidity). The most frequent morbidity is from: fetopathy diabetic, congenital malformation, respiratory distress syndrome, preterm delivery, intrapartum traumatic complications (shoulder dystocia, brachial plexus injury, intracranial bleeding, fracture of clavicle), hypoglycemia, hypocalcemia, hyperbilirubinemia.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perinatal morbidity and mortality in all the diabetic pregnancies seen at the HGO-"LCA" from January 1992 to December 1993. In that period 186 women (mean age 31 yr) were diagnosed as having diabetes during pregnancy: 54% of them had DMG, 40% DM-II and 6% DM-I, with serum glucose concentration of 133 +/- 41 mg/dL. Neonatal morbidity was given by macrosomia (17%), prematurity (14%), hyperbilirubinemia (11%), hypoglycemia (8%), congenital malformation (6%) and hypocalcemia (4%). Perinatal mortality was 5.3%. The principal causes of maternal morbid

The aim of this study was to retrospectively compare the perinatal mortality of Jewish and Bedouin hypertensive patients in the Southern area of Israel. Since almost 100% of the deliveries took place in the Soroka Medical Center, the sole hospital of the area, the computerized files of our department during 5 years (1986-1990) were used in the study. Data on the frequency of hypertensive disorder types, rates of stillbirths and neonatal deaths, maternal age and parity, pre-term and term deliveries, prenatal care, intrauterine growth retardation, mode of delivery and fetal sex, were analysed ac

BACKGROUND: The strong association between birth weight and perinatal mortality is due both to gestational age and to factors unrelated to gestational age. Conventional analysis obscures these separate contributions to perinatal mortality, and overemphasizes the role of birth weight. An alternative approach is used here to separate gestational age from other factors.
METHODS: Data are from 400,000 singleton births in the Norwegian Medical Birth Registry. The method of Wilcox and Russell is used to distinguish the contributions to perinatal mortality made by gestational age and by relative bir

The authors consider the contribution made by genetic factors to perinatal and infant mortality on the basis of many-year studies performed in the Minsk Teratology Center and analysis of the data available in the literature. In 1972-1984 there was an increase in the incidence of congenital malformations among deceased children. Genetic factors predispose to at least 7-8% postimplantation embryonal and fetal elimination. Perinatal and neonatal mortality is caused by congenital malformations in 19.1 and 37% of cases, respectively. A genetic analysis has indicated that 23.2% of them are induced b

We investigated the relation of hospital delivery volume and nursery technology level to perinatal outcome in 226,164 White singleton births in Washington State, 1980-83. Level III facilities (neonatal intensive care unit) were defined by the state licensing commission. We defined the Level II (intermediate) and Level I (normal newborn) facilities using published criteria. Infants under 2000 gm born in Level III facilities had half the risk of perinatal death compared to those born in a Level I or II facility. No significant improvement was noted among level or volume groupings for normal birt

In the period between 1983-1987, there were 101,056 births at Rajvithi hospital. Out of these, 6,158 sick newborn were transferred to Children's hospital for further care. The incidence of low birth-weight infants was 9.42 per cent. Average perinatal mortality was 14.49 per 1,000 births, ranging from 13.44 to 15.52 per 1,000 births. The major causes of early neonatal death were perinatal asphyxia, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), immaturity (less than 1,000 g), congenital anomalies, and infection. Beyond this period (7-28 days of age) the causes of death were infection, congenital anomalie

Perinatal deaths occurring within the City of Harare, Zimbabwe, during 1983 were studied. Data were collected from all known deliveries within the city. This included exact numbers from three central maternity hospitals, and from referring midwife-run maternity clinics. An estimate was made of the number of births and perinatal deaths occurring within the city, but outside these official maternity facilities. All perinatal deaths were reviewed. The birthweight, the cause of death, and the antenatal care registration status of the mother were established. There were 2103 perinatal deaths from a

The contribution of multiple pregnancy to overall perinatal mortality in the 3 major hospitals in Benin City has been reviewed. Although the incidence is 2.6% of all deliveries, it accounts for 14.3% of the overall perinatal mortality. The factors of importance in relation to perinatal loss included preterm delivery, low birthweight, birth order, malpresentation, mode of delivery, and failure to diagnose multiple pregnancy before labor. Bedrest is advocated. Health education is important in encouraging parturients to avail themselves of available antenatal facilities. A high index of suspicion

From 1970 to 1976 301 from 14,033 children died in the perinatal period. The perinatal mortality decreased clearly during this 6 years. A further decrease is to be obtained only by more intensive maternity care and prevention of premature birth.
