OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether there was an association between chronic periodontitis (CP) and reduced respiratory function.
METHODS: A group of dentate 58- to 72-year-old men in Northern Ireland had a comprehensive periodontal examination. Parallel to the periodontal examination, participants completed questionnaires gathering information on their medical history, social circumstances, demographic background and tobacco use. A physical examination assessed anthropometric measures. Fasting blood samples were obtained and analysed for high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). Spirometry

Chronic periodontitis (ChP) is a prevalent inflammatory disease affecting 46% of the US population. ChP produces a profound local inflammatory response to dysbiotic oral microbiota that leads to destruction of alveolar bone and tooth loss. ChP is also associated with systemic illnesses, including cardiovascular diseases, malignancies, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, the mechanisms underlying these adverse health outcomes are poorly understood. In this prospective cohort study, we used a highly multiplex mass cytometry immunoassay to perform an in-depth analysis of the systemic consequ

OBJECTIVE: This review was designed to explore the use of probiotics in prevention or treatment of periodontitis.
METHODS: A search was performed using MEDLINE and bibliographies from previous reviews in order to identify any randomised controlled animal and human probiotic interventions in periodontitis.
RESULTS: Five studies using probiotics in animal models of periodontitis and eight clinical studies using probiotics in patients with chronic periodontitis were analysed. The analysis of the animal models showed reduction in periodontal pathogens and bleeding on probing when probiotics were

Periodontitis is driven by disproportionate host inflammatory immune responses induced by an imbalance in the composition of oral bacteria; this instigates microbial dysbiosis, along with failed resolution of the chronic destructive inflammation. The objectives of this study were to identify microbial signatures for health and chronic periodontitis at the genus level and to propose a model of dysbiosis, including the calculation of bacterial ratios. Published sequencing data obtained from several different studies (196 subgingival samples from patients with chronic periodontitis and 422 subgin

This volume of Periodontology 2000 represents the 25th anniversary of the Journal, and uses the occasion to assess important advancements in periodontology over the past quarter-century as well as the hurdles that remain. Periodontitis is defined by pathologic loss of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. The disease involves complex dynamic interactions among active herpesviruses, specific bacterial pathogens and destructive immune responses. Periodontal diagnostics is currently based on clinical rather than etiologic criteria, and provides limited therapeutic guidance. Periodontal caus

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Microbial recognition in the periodontium through specific leukocyte receptors gives rise to the response which in susceptible individuals can lead to periodontal diseases. The aim of this study was to explore the expression of leukocyte receptors in the gingival tissues of chronic periodontitis patients and to analyse differences between diseased and control sites (sites with probing pocket depth <4 mm).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-seven chronic periodontitis patients were included in the study. Gingival biopsies were harvested from diseased and control sites and p

BACKGROUND: Human leukocyte antigens (HLA) have been considered a candidate of genetic risk markers for aggressive periodontitis (AP). AP has also been associated with polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) dysfunction. The role of monocyte subsets in AP has also not been completely explored. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to assess in, AP subjects, the possible association between defective PMN adhesion and β2-integrin expression; defective neutrophil migration and actin polymerization level; the expression of ABO blood group and HLA antigen; and the percentage of CD14+ CD16+ monocyte

BACKGROUND: Several biologically plausible mechanisms have been proposed to mediate the association between periodontitis and atherosclerotic vascular disease (AVD), including adverse effects on vascular endothelial function. Circulating endothelial progenitor cells (cEPCs) are known to contribute to vascular repair, but limited data are available regarding the relationship between cEPC levels and periodontitis. The aims of this cross-sectional study are to investigate the levels of hemangioblastic and monocytic cEPCs in patients with periodontitis and periodontally healthy controls and to ass

Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, a defect in insulin action or a combination of both. Periodontitis is now considered a chronic localized infection of the oral cavity that can trigger inflammatory host immune responses at local and systemic levels, and can also be a source of bacteremia. It is now known that periodontitis has an influence on the pathogenesis of certain systemic diseases. The biological relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease is well documented. In the mid-90s sufficient

Periodontal diseases are common inflammatory conditions of the supporting apparatus of the teeth which lead to early tooth loss. This review discusses the evidence for a role of reactive oxygen species in inducing periodontal tissue damage and focuses on recent evidence showing increased local and systemic alterations in the redox balance of periodontitis. An appraisal of the methods for analysis of oxidative stress in periodontal disease research is provided, showing an increase in oxidative stress measures and oxidative damage fingerprints detected in studies investigating periodontitis case

INTRODUCTION: The proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-1 is a key regulator of host responses to microbial infection and a major modulator of extracellular matrix catabolism and bone resorption. Allele2 of IL-1β is associated with a four-fold increase in IL-1β production. The aim of this case-control study was to evaluate the gene polymorphism of IL-1β in the pathogenesis of endodontic failure. We hypothesized that the gene polymorphism (allele2 of IL-1β) would influence host response and enhance inflammatory reactions predisposing to persistent apical periodontitis (PAP).

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis and periodontitis are frequent disorders that affect aging populations. It has been hypothesized that both conditions may be related.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether dental osteoporosis is a local manifestation of systemic bone loss having similar etiology and risk factors, or whether it is an independent process depending primarily on factors that cause periodontitis.
METHODS: A systematic review of clinical trials assessing the relationship between osteoporosis and periodontitis was carried out. An electronic search was made based on Internet search engines, MEDLIN

BACKGROUND: Generalized membranous gingival enlargement due to an accumulation of fibrin deposits associated with severe alveolar bone loss (ligneous periodontitis) is a rare condition, and plasminogen deficiency seems to play a central role in its pathogenesis. However, this condition has not been described in association with syndromes. This article reports a case of ligneous periodontitis in a boy with the classic type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS).
METHODS: A 12-year-old white male presented with generalized gingival overgrowth and severe alveolar bone loss. A physical examination revea

The association between ischemic cardiovascular disease and infectious disease is very dubious, and evidence points in several directions. Chronic periodontitis has been proposed as a potential risk factor based on many studies. A review of these studies demonstrates that the majority of them are retrospective epidemiological studies and therefore of little value in determining a possible association. New data seems to indicate an association between atherosclerosis and alveolar bone loss, thus indicating that a long-standing burden of infection is related to the slow process of atherosclerosi

AIM: The purpose of this study was to assess the long-term influence of gingival inflammation on tooth loss.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The data originated from a 26-year longitudinal study of Norwegian males, who practiced adequate daily oral home care and received "state-of-the-art" dental care. The initial examination in 1969 included 565 individuals aged between 16 and 34 years. Subsequent examinations took place in 1971, 1973, 1975, 1981, 1988 and 1995. Thus, the study covers the age range of 16-59 years. The teeth were divided into three tooth groups (I-III) reflecting the history of inflamm
